This beer was a surprise for me. Blind tasted it against Firestone Union Jack and Jai Alai, and to my surprise, it was a better IPA, more balanced, fine quality taste, depth. Rich, complex, apricot, honey note, darn good. I encourage everyone to do blind taste test comparisons.

On tap in a pint glass.

Dense copper color with a 1F white head. Thick film, heavy lacing.

Caramel malts, toffee. Some mild citrus and floral hops. Slight metallic smell.

Malt forward with herbal and floral hop flavors. It tastes like an English IPA.

Full and big body. Smooth, bittersweet. Snappy hops.

One of their best. Try 12.

A Pours with a dense head of sticky white foam on a hazy, surprisingly dark copper body. Good retention and great lace.

S Opens big, fruity hop aroma with lots of grapefruit and mango on the caramel, darkish toffee background malts.

T Follows smell and even better, a balance of sweet caramel malt up front with pine hops. Finishing complexity with spicy, tea like mid-taste and a balancing bitterness.

M Medium body, moderate bubbles with a dry finish.

D Big, pungent ipa. Love it. Buy 6.

Once again, I am backsliding to the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody, but I have been concentrating on DuClaw's beers for the past week or so and so it is not entirely unfitting now in the midst of an APA/AIPA/DIPA onslaught.

From the bottle: "

I Pop!ped the cap and began a gentle pour so as not to rouse the lees that may have formed. I got two fingers of dense, tawny head for my trouble and I was happy about it, especially given its retention so that I could assess matters. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a definite evergreen/wintergreen/pine/mint scent, underlain by a caramel sweetness. Zing! went the strings of my heart. Mouthfeel was medium to full with a burning, hell-razing hop presence on the tongue. Phew! This was about as close to a DIPA as an AIPA gets. Gazing over at the Razer, loads of sticky lacing had begun to form. Rilly?!? This ain't a DIPA? The taste was incredibly minty and each after breath was like I had been sucking on a breath mint. Look, Ma, I'm minty fresh! Holy Jesus. The finish was cool and dry and I was reminded of Fermentor Lew's quote about lagers being like the frozen tundra. This was equally icy in a minty, cool way. Whew! I think that I may need to lay down after this one.
