Notes / Commercial Description:
First brewed in 2011, this Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter is jet black in color with a tan, rocky head, full body and creamy, luxurious mouthfeel. Its lightly sweet, malty flavor is accented by rich flavors of chocolate, coffee and peanut butter, and balanced by a subtle hop character and moderate 6.5% abv. Sweet Baby Jesus finishes smooth, dry, and roasty with lingering notes of chocolate and peanut butter so savory, you will exclaim its name!

Darkest brown color possible, almost black. Tan head with light carbonation. The smell is strong, with cocoa dominating and nutty notes coming in a close second. Think Hershey's cocoa powder and a jar of Jif and you are almost there -- almost ... because the peanut butter seems ... almost like peanut butter ... but not exactly. The smell is intense enough that you can drink it straight from the bottle and get the point. Flavors are chocolate syrup, cocoa (dominating) and peanut butter. Just enough hops to balance it all. Finishes slightly hoppy. I didn't have the issues with aftertaste that others noted. Carbonation stays fizzy even after it warms; combined with the hops on the back of the tongue it leaves an unusual finish for a fairly sweet beer. Feel is slick, slightly sticky, with carbonation that stays to the end. Label says it is a chocolate peanut butter porter and it is all of that. After the first couple of bottles, I bothered to read the label and was a little disappointed to see that it's a "porter with natural flavors." I wish they wouldn't invoke the name of the Divine in a beer that uses flavoring. Hmm. I want to rate the beer a little higher. If you like chocolatey porters, it's worth trying.

This blasphemous porter is the darkest of brown, with orange highlights and plenty of effervescence; its thin, creamy light tan head has modest retention but leaves nice thick ladders and spots of fine-grained lacing. The aroma is quite assertive, with a strong blend of sweet roasted peanut butter and dark milk chocolate lying atop powdery cocoa and slight alcoholic undertones. The flavor is predominately bitter dark chocolate and cocoa, with peanut butter accents and hints of dark toffee; the peanut butter is not expressed anywhere near as strongly on the palate as it is on the nose. The finish is peanut butter, toffee and a bit of booze, followed by the onset of a mild roasted nutty bitterness that lingers for a few minutes. Mouthfeel is commensurate with the medium-full body; the texture is sticky, creamy and very peppery from the fizzy carbonation- too much so, as the carbonation bite hampers sensory uptake of the flavors, making this beer less than it could be- the incorporation of peanut butter is very nicely done. 27.10.15

Du Claw Brewing – Sweet Baby Jesus - bottling date 14.03.2015

Appearance: Black, opaque beer with a coffee coloured patchy head. Very little slow moving carbonation.

Aroma: Not surprisingly - chocolate and peanut butter! One whiff of this took me right back to childhood - crunchy peanut butter and chocolate on toast.
Taste: Dark chocolate liquor and sweet ice coffee up front, peanut butter in the middle with a dry finish. Very enjoyable.

Mouth feel: Silky with a dry finish. Quite low in body, but then I'm used to big Belgian brews.

Overall: Much more enjoyable than I thought it would be. I thought this was going to be one of those gimmicky craft beers that has just only been brewed to be original, hip whatever but I would actually drink this again. The peanut butter is present but it's not overpowering and it works well with the coffee and chocolate flavours from the dark malt.

Just finished my first bottle, lightly chilled. I loved the body, the aftertaste. Like drinking Guinness while eating a peanut-butter cup.
