Funk Blueberry Citrus WheatFunk Blueberry Citrus Wheat
Notes: The traditional American Wheat Ale serves as a solid baseline, but we couldn’t be content until we tore the roof off this sucker! Funk, our Blueberry Citrus Wheat Ale, sets the rhythm with a soulful fusion of American wheat and hops, before unleashing a stunning encore with big notes of blueberry and Meyer lemon. It’s no jive, you’ll just dig it!

For the majority of my life, DuClaw has always been a brewery I've known and come to really enjoy as my quality mall brewery/ local brewpub scene that really got me into crafted beer. Many years later the restaurants are nearly all gone and their beers are separately operated by the original brewer; but, how has Funk held up over the years?

For starters, Funk's look is a hazy unfiltered pale yellow with a golden tint. Aromas of sweet berries and citrus radiate outward, no real wheat smell unless heavily breathing in the beer.

The flavor is outstanding. Generally, blueberry beer can be a bit of a letdown, in the case of Wild Blue a lager with too much abv and too little flavor to match it you had this; but, DuClaw is better. You will notice a very light mouthfeel and a rounded blueberry note that is noticeable from fronts to endnotes. The citrus is masked, though it is apparent in the mids, and the wheat finish is clean and not too overwhelming as you'd find in some other American Wheat beers. Very soft water, highly filtered with calcium added for a bit of smoothness.

I find this beer to have a well made, basic (complex if you really need to sit there and think on every not) flavor that is not too much of this or that. It is a an American wheat beer, wouldn't use pale as described below, that is entirely sessionable and well made. DuClaw has been a local stable for great beer and it is easy to see why this one is still canned to this day.

L: Pours golden yellow, smooth lacing, bubbles constantly rising

S: Smells like blueberries alright. A bit of a tang too, like German hefe.

T: Mild blueberry opener on the front palate. Bitter/sour hit on the side palate. Finishes as Ale. Delicious ale.

F: Excellent. Smooth and almost buttery.

O: A completely acceptable beer. Light and crisp on the tongue. The best blueberry brew I've had a go at, even. From a sales perspective, blueberry is kind of a disadvantage. Fruity in general is hit and miss. That said, the malt combonation that forms the base ale is of excellent quality. They could do away with the fruity and make a badass German Hefeweizen with it, or switch it to Raspberry and blow at least two established breweries right out of the vat.

Poured from a can....endless stream of bubbles, almost as if I dropped an Alka Seltzer into the glass. With all the bubbles, surprisingly little head. Color is an off-putting opaque orange.

Smells fruity and yeasty.

Tastes like a watered down Blue Moon. Not getting any blueberry aroma or taste at all. Not necessarily unpleasant, but not great either.

Mouth feel is almost non-existent.
A beer named "Funk" should be in your face---good or bad. This is too mild. The best thing about this beer is the interesting can design.

Probably the best thng

Pours a clear golden color with a pretty well retained monstrous white head that left few spots of lacing. Smells of blueberries, more blueberries and even more blueberries. Tastes of blueberries, lemons, wheat and an earthly quality. Light bodied, highly carbonated, light mouth feel, refreshing.

Not horrible as a fruited wheat beer, but overall the flavors are fairly bland and the beer as a whole is somewhat watery. Not a whole lot of aroma - weak flavors of wheat and blueberry and I'm struggling to find the lemon.

L: Clear golden pour. 2 fingers of fluffy head. Scant lacing.

S: Blueberries... mild lemons and grain, but mostly blueberry.

T/F: Strong blueberry flavor... grainy wheat, but mostly fruit which lingers through the aftertaste. Not fake per se... but definitely strong. Very mild citrus in the background. Some wheat character but also not at the forefront.

O: A pleasant enough blueberry wheat. Simple... and nothing to seek out, but not bad either. Middle of the road stuff.

Light golden see through look with a dissipating off white head. Big blueberry scent with a slight citrus companion. Mostly blueberry start feeding into a bready malt finish with every so slight bitterness on the taste. Flavor works and not sweet or cloying. Crisp and pretty well carbonated. Not too bad.

Poured into a nonic pint glass, the appearance was a nice looking semi-golden to yellow color with a finger's worth of white foamy head that swiftly dissipated. No lace.
The aroma had a nice sweet refreshing blueberry flesh running over top of some faint citrus pulpy sweetness, seemed genuine to me. Light sweet wheat at the very end.
The flavor was mainly sweet with just a hint of tart ever so slightly at the end. Aftertaste was just a tad sticky but acceptable with the blueberry, a little bit of wheat and a tickle of citrus.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a nice crisp sessionability about it. Carbonation felt good, maybe a touch low, but that didn't bother me. ABV felt on par.
Overall, I'd say DuClaw did everything that they wanted to with this beer. Perhaps, it would be better to me if I had it on a hot day, points not taken away because of that as it doesn't seem fair to the brewers since they can't control the weather.

I'm a big fan of DuClaw, but not so much of this offering...

While the brew had what was the most appealing beer poured into a pint glass, clear, orange with yellow highlights, the smell was something akin to blueberry soda. There was very little note to hops or even malt. The beer was light- to medium-bodied with a strong carbonation at the start but then greatly tamped downed towards the bottom. I really wanted to like this, but it was just a few steps above a NYF blueberry drink, maybe not as syrupy, but still sweet with little balance across the brew.

Still, it wasn't horrible, just not what I was expecting from a real good brewer.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 3/17/2016. Pours lightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big lightly tart blueberry, lemon, wheat, cracker, biscuit, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of pale malt, fruit, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart blueberry, lemon, wheat, cracker, biscuit, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of blueberry, lemon, wheat, cracker, biscuit, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt, fruit, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Minimal dryness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy, and slightly acidic/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is a very nice fruited pale wheat ale! All around nice robustness and balance of pale malt, fruit, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth, easy, and refreshing to drink. Very flavorful for the ABV, with a great balance between fruit and malt. A very enjoyable offering.

As I continue to winnow through the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody, I am finding beers that I do not even remember purchasing! In fact, I have so many DuClaw beers hanging around that I am embarking on a horizontal tasting for the next few days. This should be interesting.

From the bottle: "Slide into the groove of this soulful fusion of American wheat and hops that sets the rhythm for a stunning encore of blueberry and Meyer lemon. Now tear the lid off this sucker, [']cause you’re gonna ... just dig it!"; "Respect the Fluid".

The Pop! was no problem, but the pour was going to be incredibly gentle. There was no telling whether there would be lees on the punt, but I was not taking the chance. I got some foaming initially, but when it quickly fell, I revived it with an in-glass swirl to create a finger of foamy, tawny head with moderate retention. Color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13), although closer to the lower number, with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled like blueberry pancakes or blueberry muffins! Mmmm. I experienced this the other day from Mosaic hops, but here I gather that it was an actual fruit adjunct. Either way, I am a fan of blueberries! Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was not over-the-top sweet, but it was definitely of blueberries with a light tang. I could not have identified the source as Meyer lemons, but the wheat malt worked well to give it a spritzy tang. Finish was semi-sweet, very refreshing and probably worth revisiting on a hot summer's day.

Today is M, 20 January 2020 & I am knee-deep in a DelMarVa (+ DC) eradiCANtion of the beer backlog here at Chez Woody. My local, in-person trading partner, @tone77 had dropped this off for me a while back, but since I had already reviewed it in/from a Bottle, it did not take precedence. Now, it is part of a HUGE DuClaw horizontal of nowt but CANs for The CANQuest (tm) & I CAN't be happier!

From the CAN: " Just Dig It!"; "Slide into the groove of this soulful fusion of American wheat and hops that sets the rhythm for a stunning encore of blueberry and meyer lemon."; "Crafted in Maryland"; "Craft Be Cherished. Rules Be Damned."

For this iteration, I did some in-CAN agitation since, as a Wheat Ale as its base, haze was allowable in the style. I then Crack!ed open the vent & beCAN a heavy-handed C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. It foamed up beautifully to form just over a finger of fizzy, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with very limited retention, quickly falling to wisps. 8=( Color was a gorgeous solid-Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity! 8=) Nose smelled like the blueberry waffle that I ate for breakfast! Blueberry & wheat - yummy, yum, yum. 8=) Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but close. The taste was definitely of blueberry, but it had a tad bit of tartness from the wheat, making it all the more tasty. I do not generally like anything that is outright sweet, so this filled the bill nicely. Finish was semi-sweet, remaining like that blueberry waffle. Mmm. YMMV.

Funk | DuClaw Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, this beer's head is three fingers thick, with secular lacing, and a translucent straw gold body.

Smells like a nice blend of the wheat and lemon with faint, non-sweet blueberry aroma.

I taste a mild, easygoing mix of the smell with a small hop bitterness accented by the blueberries.

The mouthfeel here is medium-light with fair carbonation.

I'l rate Funk | DuClaw Brewing Company with an overall 4.5. A very quenching choice for hot days.

Taster on tap at Whole Foods during a separate tasting event.

This beer tastes like what every blueberry wheat aspires to be: more like drinking a blueberry juice or tea than actual beer. Whether or not that's a positive is up for debate.

The beer has in-your-face fruit on the nose, akin to smelling a giant box of blueberries, and sweet, unadulterated blueberry on the palate, followed by a touch of lemon and thick wheat on the backend.

It's so hard to rate a beer like this because while it is a) not my style of beer at all, b) not a flavor profile that I tend to seek out, and c) more focused on the adjunct than the actual beer, it's difficult to argue that that was not DuClaw's intent. While it's not a beer that I'd pick up from the store, it's certainly not an offensive beer, and one can't help but feel that this preoccupation with additive over substance is precisely what DuClaw was looking to accomplish.

Appearance- Medium gold. Low white foamy head. Intermediate clarity.

Smell- Fresh blueberry, wheat

Taste- A dry grainy wheat malt with a quick rush of fresh blueberries. The berry flavor is sweet and compliments the wheat malt rather than over power it. Finishes with a hint of lemon citrus and light hint of coriander.

Mouthfeel- Medium-light in body with active carbonation.

Overall- I enjoyed this wheat/blueberry beer. Nice Summer offering. Unsure if it's a fruit beer or a pale wheat ale but it's both essentially. Crafted well.

A: The beer is clear dark yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that quickly died down, leaving some lacing on the surface and a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of blueberries are present in the nose.

Copied over my review from the duplicate version:
Had at DuClaw brewpub in Arundel Mills, MD. Look was nothing special, clear golden appearance with minimal head. I'm usually not a fan of blueberry beers but the citrus really saved the day here. While the blueberry smell is predominant, the citrus additions are very nice and enhanced the overall experience. Big burst of citrus/blueberry wheat that was very appealing and refreshing. An easy to drink and enjoyable wheat for the warmer months, solid local selection for me.

Cautious of how fruit flavoring can both trasform a beer and destroy a beer, an apprehensive attitude goes into selecting DuClaw's Funk Blueberry Citrus Wheat Ale. The generous use of flavorings from the brewery are well documented, so what are they going to do with a fruit beer?

Its hazy gold, slight amber hue is an indication that the brewery is more focused on the flavor of the beer rather than its pretention. Shy on head character, the beer immediately rewards the nose with bright blueberry with a cereal tone. Beyond its scent, the sweeter and breadier flavors seem cobbler-like with the fruit leading the way.

Expectations of fruit dominance cause for bracing, however the kinder malt-centric flavors are bready with shortcake with a pastry sweetness that's eerily of pop-tarts. Lemon link up with blueberry for an effortless marriage in taste as the finish resonnates with a cream, malt and sweet extention.

Medium bodied but trending light with the pierce of acidity and alcohol, the beer's carbonation offers an aromatic creaminess while facilitating dryness and a savory quality. Trending tart and vinous, the ale leaves the mouth with a strong citrus wave and its blueberry whimsy.
