The traditional American Wheat Ale serves as a solid baseline, but we couldn’t be content until we tore the roof off this sucker! Funk, our Blueberry Citrus Wheat Ale, sets the rhythm with a soulful fusion of American wheat and hops, before unleashing a stunning encore with big notes of blueberry and Meyer lemon. It’s no jive, you’ll just dig it!

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 3/17/2016. Pours lightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big lightly tart blueberry, lemon, wheat, cracker, biscuit, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of pale malt, fruit, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart blueberry, lemon, wheat, cracker, biscuit, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of blueberry, lemon, wheat, cracker, biscuit, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt, fruit, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Minimal dryness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy, and slightly acidic/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is a very nice fruited pale wheat ale! All around nice robustness and balance of pale malt, fruit, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth, easy, and refreshing to drink. Very flavorful for the ABV, with a great balance between fruit and malt. A very enjoyable offering.

As I continue to winnow through the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody, I am finding beers that I do not even remember purchasing! In fact, I have so many DuClaw beers hanging around that I am embarking on a horizontal tasting for the next few days. This should be interesting.

From the bottle: "Slide into the groove of this soulful fusion of American wheat and hops that sets the rhythm for a stunning encore blueberry and Meyer lemon. Now tear the lid off this sucker, [']cause you’re gonna ... just dig it!"; "Respect the Fluid".

The Pop! was no problem, but the pour was going to be incredibly gentle. There was no telling whether there would be lees on the punt, but I was not taking the chance. I got some foaming initially, but when it quickly fell, I revived it with an in-glass swirl to create a finger of foamy, tawny head with moderate retention. Color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13), although closer to the lower number, with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled like blueberry pancakes or blueberry muffins! Mmmm. I experienced this the other day from Mosaic hops, but here I gather that it was an actual fruit adjunct. Either way, I am a fan of blueberries! Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was not over-the-top sweet, but it was definitely of blueberries with a light tang. I could not have identified the source as Meyer lemons, but the wheat malt worked well to give it a spritzy tang. Finish was semi-sweet, very refreshing and probably worth revisiting on a hot summer's day.

Funk | DuClaw Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, this beer's head is three fingers thick, with secular lacing, and a translucent straw gold body.

Smells like a nice blend of the wheat and lemon with faint, non-sweet blueberry aroma.

I taste a mild, easygoing mix of the smell with a small hop bitterness accented by the blueberries.

The mouthfeel here is medium-light with fair carbonation.

I'l rate Funk | DuClaw Brewing Company with an overall 4.5. A very quenching choice for hot days.

Funk brewed by DuClaw Brewing Company, with an ABV of 5.00% This brew pours out a nice deep amber color with a nice white head. The smell of Funk is rich with Blueberry ,grins sweetness. There is also some nice malts and hops in the smell of this brew. There is a lot going on in the smell of this brew. Now for the taste it bold with grains and malts with a mild Blueberry taste. The blueberry is not overpowering at all in this brew. The Blueberry is very inviting. Funk has a real super nice balance to iFunk | DuClaw Brewing Companyt. There is nothing overpowering about this brew at all. I can really get into this brew, it is nice and smooth. The mouthfeel of Fuck is bold rich smooth and refreshing. Taster on tap at Whole Foods during a separate tasting event.

This beer tastes like what every blueberry wheat aspires to be: more like drinking a blueberry juice or tea than actual beer. Whether or not that's a positive is up for debate.

The beer has in-your-face fruit on the nose, akin to smelling a giant box of blueberries, and sweet, unadulterated blueberry on the palate, followed by a touch of lemon and thick wheat on the backend.

It's so hard to rate a beer like this because while it is a) not my style of beer at all, b) not a flavor profile that I tend to seek out, and c) more focused on the adjunct than the actual beer, it's difficult to argue that that was not DuClaw's intent. While it's not a beer that I'd pick up from the store, it's certainly not an offensive beer, and one can't help but feel that this preoccupation with additive over substance is precisely what DuClaw was looking to accomplish.

Poured 12oz bottle into snifter glass. 5% abv

Appearance- Medium gold. Low white foamy head. Intermediate clarity.

Smell- Fresh blueberry, wheat

Taste- A dry grainy wheat malt with a quick rush of fresh blueberries. The berry flavor is sweet and compliments the wheat malt rather than over power it. Finishes with a hint of lemon citrus and light hint of coriander.

Mouthfeel- Medium-light in body with active carbonation.

Overall- I enjoyed this wheat/blueberry beer. Nice Summer offering. Unsure if it's a fruit beer or a pale wheat ale but it's both essentially. Crafted well.

A: The beer is clear dark yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that quickly died down, leaving some lacing on the surface and a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of blueberries are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of blueberries along with notes of wheat and hints of grainy malts.
M: It feels a bit more than light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and makes for an enjoyable summer beverage.

Copied over my review from the duplicate version:
Had at DuClaw brewpub in Arundel Mills, MD. Look was nothing special, clear golden appearance with minimal head. I'm usually not a fan of blueberry beers but the citrus really saved the day here. While the blueberry smell is predominant, the citrus additions are very nice and enhanced the overall experience. Big burst of citrus/blueberry wheat that was very appealing and refreshing. An easy to drink and enjoyable wheat for the warmer months, solid local selection for me.

12 oz bottle into a lager glass. 18 March 2016 packaging date.

Light body with medium+ carbonation and a dry finish.

Aroma: earthy hops, lemon, blueberry puree and wheat.

Flavor: a well balanced mix of blueberries, grains and hops, with the blueberry readily detectable but conservatively added, allowing the hops and grains to dominate. Some lemon in the finish. (Overly?) Mild.

Overall: not funky bur rather clean and refreshing.

Cautious of how fruit flavoring can both trasform a beer and destroy a beer, an apprehensive attitude goes into selecting DuClaw's Funk Blueberry Citrus Wheat Ale. The generous use of flavorings from the brewery are well documented, so what are they going to do with a fruit beer?

Its hazy gold, slight amber hue is an indication that the brewery is more focused on the flavor of the beer rather than its pretention. Shy on head character, the beer immediately rewards the nose with bright blueberry with a cereal tone. Beyond its scent, the sweeter and breadier flavors seem cobbler-like with the fruit leading the way.

Expectations of fruit dominance cause for bracing, however the kinder malt-centric flavors are bready with shortcake with a pastry sweetness that's eerily of pop-tarts. Lemon link up with blueberry for an effortless marriage in taste as the finish resonnates with a cream, malt and sweet extention.

Medium bodied but trending light with the pierce of acidity and alcohol, the beer's carbonation offers an aromatic creaminess while facilitating dryness and a savory quality. Trending tart and vinous, the ale leaves the mouth with a strong citrus wave and its blueberry whimsy.

It pours a yellow gold with no lace left from the head. There is an almost tutti frutti smell to this one, it puts me very faintly in mind of the milk after a bowl of Froot Loops cereal. The flavour is a mild, citrusy bite with faint berry (particularly blueberry) hints. The texture is smooth but unremarkable.

12 fl. oz. bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

This beer pours a light shade of amber with golden highlights. It is topped with an inch of off white head that disappears quickly and leaves no lacing.

It smells like blueberry along with some lemon citrus notes.

The taste starts out like your average blueberry ale, but then the citrus flavor kicks in giving it a little something to separate it from the rest.

Medium mouthfeel

This is a decent blueberry ale. I put it slightly above average do to having a little more flavor than your average blueberry ale.

Smelled blueberries as soon as I opened the bottle. Pours a nice cloudy golden honey color, with a small white head. As far as taste, there is a hint of blueberries at the start, but not overwhelming. The finish is kind of bland though. Overall, I like this beer, I could drink this all day long. The blueberries give it a little something to make it different, but not ruin the pleasure of drinking it.

Had this out of a bottle for the first time last night up at the Cloverleaf. It's not something that I would have normally ordered but it was on their summer PhD list and it seemed like it would be light enough while still having a ton of body. This turned out to be slightly artificial tasting but it needed more hops and wheat in order to stand out more. As it was, I thought that this was decent for the summer but was a bit too heavy when it came to the blueberry flavor.

The pour to this was decent - as the beer had a somewhat golden hue that was cloudy but still had a bit of clarity to it. The head was present but not full and subsided fairly quickly once this settled down. Lots of blueberry in the nose to go with some wheat with both of these also being present in the taste. The meyer lemon wasn't terribly strong but it was there and somewhat more tart than I would have expected. No doubt that the saving grace of this beer was the presence of the pale and wheat malt, which kept the somewhat contrived feel of the blueberry and lemon from taking over. This was juicy, fairly well-rounded, and easygoing without having any particular qualities that stood out.

On second thought, the relatively low alcoholic content of this was something that was noteworthy as I would have been able to polish off another in a sitting if it were possible. Not a lot of hops here but if you're looking for a summer beer with a nice body and fruit flavor to it, this would be a good choice. Not as good as the Oberon or Hop Sun as this straddled the line between a Pale Wheat Ale and a Fruit beer, but this beer ended up with just enough going for it.

Pours Crystal clear, with soapy white head that does manage to have some lasting power.
Smell of blueberry hits as I open the bottle. If I look at this as a pure fruit beer, the smell is nice. However, it's about the only note in the smell. There's a hint of cereal grain, almost makes me think of Booberry cereal (but not really sweet in nature).

Taste, again as a fruit beer, is ok. Fairly clean opening, with the blueberry present and growing thoughout the taste. I get the lightest bit of orange in some sips of a warmer beer. There is a light grassy note that hits early to mid taste and provides a counter to the blueberry, but not necessarily a great one. Feels on the light and watery side, not expected in a wheat beer.

Just not at all what I expected from a wheat beer. Some ok fruit notes, but the combination with the choice of bittering flavor didn't work for me.

A: Pours a relatively clear golden honey in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and a hint of amber + golden yellow highlights. The beer has a half finger tall sudsy fizzy foamy white head that quickly reduces to a large patch of thin film covering about 75% of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of wheat, citrus/orange, and just a hint of blueberry. Light amounts of funkiness become present as it warms up.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of wheat, pale malts, and Belgian witbier yeast. That is followed by a light flavor of barnyard funkiness with a light amount of citrus/orange. Finally, there is a hint of blueberry in the finish which is neither tart nor sweet. Minimal amounts of bitterness.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of acidic tartness and dryness in the finish.

O: Interesting but the blueberry and citrus are much more mute in the flavor/aroma than I expected. Nice amounts of funkiness. Easy enough to drink but not interesting enough to want another.

Brewed in the style of an American Pale Wheat Ale. Available in 12 oz. bottled 6 packs and on draft.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a snifter glass. Served above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp frothy head of an off white color over a pale amber body with moderate haziness and lots of sediment in tow. Soft carbonation is visible. Retention is below average and there is no visible lacing. 2.75

(Smell) Strong aromas of juicy and sweet blueberry extract up front, with subtle notes of orange peel over a pale and soft wheat body with a moderate sweetness. Light blueberry tartness predicts a wider range of blueberry flavors. Low hop profile and a low bitterness. The aroma is reminiscent of blueberry-heavy beers, of which local SweetWater Blue comes to mind. 3.75

(Taste) The flavor starts and ends with lingering dried blueberries and blueberry extract, softly sweet but very potent in flavor. Chewy wheat malts and light pale syrups make for a sufficient malt profile, whereas hop flavors and bitterness is nowhere to be found. The little bit of balance that this beer has comes from a subtle inclusion of orange peel, which doesn't contribute much to flavor and isn't quite enough to balance the blueberry syrup fruitiness. The fruit profile isn't as startling and over-the-top as fruit syrup beers (Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat and Wild Blue come to mind), but the lack of balance is still notable. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) The texture is slightly chewy, smooth and lightly dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a medium frothiness and a moderately crisp finish. Body is medium+ for the style, shy of medium overall. Balance is moderately sweet over bitter. Alcohol presence is low and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) Blueberry is one of the more challenging flavors to capture in a beer and many breweries resort to blueberry extracts over the actual fruit. Wheat beers sound like the best candidate for blueberry flavor, and due to the popularity of large name brands popularizing the liquid Fruity Pebbles flavors of artificial blueberry, there will always be a market and a desire for beers like Funk and SweetWater Blue, even though the balance of flavors involved is often too sweet and imbalanced to impress a seasoned Pale Wheat drinker's discriminating palate. Funk will do in a pinch as one of the better balanced blueberry-infused wheat ales, but the blueberry flavor still comes off as far too artificial and one-dimensional and combined with the malt profile too boastful to generate an interesting array of flavors. I would have enjoyed more tart notes of blueberry or a more pronounced bitter citrus flavor. Looking back at the title of this beer I had even anticipated even some sourness, but it looks to be little more than a play on the color of blueberries. 3.5

The taste is very much fresh blueberries and wheat with light lemon zest. This is not the most complex beer like what I am used to from DuClaw. That said, it is exceptionally tasty. This is a beer that I could easily do a six of on a sunny afternoon.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, cloudy, golden/lemon-straw color with a quarter of a finger of white-colored head quickly dissolved away into a very thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass.

Aroma: Very wheaty and grassy up front, followed by lots of blueberry, lemon and lemon peel, honey and honey-suckle.

Taste: Very nice actually. Subtle notes of wheat, clover, grass, much less than I was expecting actually, followed by some hone-like sweetness and lots of blueberry and lemon zest. Quite nice flavors.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and a little creamy, as there’s very little to no carbonation. With an ABV of 5.0%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: Wow! A whit beer I like!! Nice flavors matched with a pleasant, creamy mouthfeel. Quite good!
