Style: American Amber / Red Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Pre-Prohibition style salutes a time when lagers had greater character and more distinct flavor, when beer wasn't full of the additives found in many of today's mainstream lagers. Lucky Bucket's version has a light, malty flavor that's easy on the palate. Filtered twice, the subtle maltiness nicely balances a floral hop. Dry-hopped with a fresh blend of aromatic West Coast hops, Lucky Bucket Lager is a great session beer with an ABV of 4.5% and 20 IBU's.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours an orange/ amber color with a one finger off white head. The head faded over a moderate amount of time to give a light amount of lacing.

Smell – The aroma was heavy of grain and bread. It has a big biscuit and dark wheat bread smell. Mixed with these aromas are notes of light caramel and some floral and earthy hop.

Taste – The taste begins big of a biscuit and caramel sweet flavor. As it advances some flavors of wheat and earthy hop meet the tongue. These flavors overall create a smooth taste and take the flavor to the end where they are met with a very light floral and pine hop which when combine with the caramel and biscuit take the taste to the end where they leave a nice slightly bitter flavor to linger on the tongue..

Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is on the lighter side with a slightly higher then average carbonation level. The higher carbonation makes for a good refreshing beer.

Overall – A easy drinking fairly nice flavor profile makes for a decent session beer. Not bad, but nothing to go out of your way for.

Not a bad beer with a lot of qualities, but none that seem hoppy per se. Appearance, body, & aroma are all ok, but nothing to write home about.

I was gonna start this review out by saying naw, naw no way, this ain't no APL, it's obvious an adjunct. But the bottle says it's 100% malt, so I dunno.

See, it smells and tastes a lot like corn. Very pleasantly, but still adjuncty. The malt is pale and simplistic. The hops are a little earthy, a little citrusy. And then this corniness just hangs over everything, inexplicable. It's a tangy grain taste. I usually associate it with corn. Kind of like lemongrass, but usually that means corn.

So, hmph. Guess I'll just go with my gut here:

This tastes nice. It's crisp and simple, but it's not quite like anything I've ever had before. It's sweet but not agressively so. Not particularly well balanced, but that's par for the style.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a BrewDog cervoise glass.

A: Little to no head, nice effevescence, clear but hazy orange-gold.

S: Lager yeast, slightly skunky, slightly fruity, touch of hops.

T/M: Actually quite pleasant. Lemon-tart and crisp with green apples, earthy hops, and lightly dry hops and/or yeast. Crisp and drinkable.

O: I don't generally like lagers, but this one gets my seal of approval. Consumable, interesting, and goes great with food.

This beer pours a cloudy golden color. The head is half an inch in height, and recedes within seconds into almost no lacing. The aroma is of light caramel with hints of floral hops. For the style the aroma is rather strong. The taste is similar to the aroma, but fuller. It finishes clean with a mild pale malt taste that lingers for a few seconds then goes away. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation, and a smooth texture. Overall, this is a nice easy drinking beer. I could drink this again without complaints, but there are better beers in this style that I would choose first.

Pours a pale yellow with small head. Not too much lacing. The smell has a very faint grassy flavour, but very mellow. Taste was quite mellow as well. Carbonation level was pretty much on for the sytle. A pleasant enough beer, but I didn't find it a ton better than some macro lagers.

Picked this one up for a future trade, so I thought I'd do a review on it. I've been really impressed with lucky bucket in the past.

Serving style : Stubbie bottle poured into Miller Lite 16 oz glass.

Appearance (3.75) : A hard, center-focused pour yields a stable 2 finger head with tightly knit bubbles. The body is honey-copper colored and sits at about 30% opacity. Lacing can be seen leaving rings and webs as the diminutive head recedes.

Aroma (4) : Lovely malt and barley, with some distant hops. It hits all the right platforms. Wheat, barley, with a distant cry of grapefruit hop. Just enough to be enticing but not overwhelming in a lager of this stature. I like it already. Bouquet is soft to medium strength.

Taste (4.25) : Eye-popping good... wow. The malt and hop come together absolutely perfect, with a duo punch of flavor right to the palate. This is better than "okay". A freaking 76 overall? This beer deserves much better.

More subjectively... your tongue is hit first with a buzz of exciting carbonation, and then wheat and malt character comes in, with a backbone of fruity hop. If I was going to brew a lager, especially a pre-prohibition type lager, this is how I would do it. Right here.

Mouthfeel (3.75) : Creamy, smooth, with just the right dash of zip. It ends with a barley dryness that is pleasurable.

Overall (4.09) : Can Lucky Bucket do no wrong? I'm starting to believe it. I'm still amazed these guys have such "mediocre" ratings overall... I've been drinking beer for awhile and their brews are some of the best I've had - period. This is most certainly the best pre-pro lager I've had, by a mile. You owe it to yourself to check this out.

Pre-Prohibition lager pours a golden color with a dissipating head. There wasn't any aroma from this beer. The taste had crisp malt undertones, with a strong overly sweet fruity, almost apple like taste. Hard to drink, and way to sweet. Overall its a very sweet and fruity like lager.

12 oz brown bottle poured into a pint glass, the beer is a dark gold with a fluffy off-white head. It has decent lacing.

The aroma is of grains a bit of floral hops.

The taste seems about right for what they are aiming for. It is slightly sweet with some cracker like malts and there is a bit of spice and floral hops to add some balance. Mid-glass the beer takes on a toastier note that is a little like Blue Point toasted Lager.

The mouth is medium and seems right for the beer.

I had this one with some Chinese food and it was a good match. All-in-all a tasty lager.

A - A finger's worth of perfectly level crisp off-white colored head... Minimal retention gies way to an enticing veil of lace ind slight collar... Lots of medium sized carbonation bubbles, half of which cling to the sides of the glass and the other half of which rise at a very rapid pace... The color is a darker than expected mix of bronze and copper...

S - Bread crust... Cereal grains... Fresh biscuits... Perhaps some corn notes... Some slightly sweet fruit notes... Very little if any hop presence...

T - Starts as expected with lots of bready malts... Biscuit... Grain... Bread crust... The finish is unexpectedly sweet and even a bit tart... In an American Pale Lager, those are desired flavors...

M - On the lighter side of medium bodied... Briskly carbonated... A bit sleek... Rather one dimensional...

D - An honest, but uninspired attempt... Not something I would drink again nor recommend... Even at the highly accessible 4.5% ABV, I'm not sure this one is worth seeking out... The slightly odd flavor is a killer for me...

12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a clear medium copper with a one finger white head. Fairly good head retention and lacing with the head hanging around for awhile.

Aroma of cooked vegetables and some corn. There is really a lot of DMS here and I'm not sure if it is intended or not. Some caramel and grassy hops are buried in the background.

The flavor thankfully has less in the way of DMS but does bring along an odd, sour tartness that really detracts from the flavor. Some toffee and bready malt along with hay in the background but again I feel like there are too many off-flavors up front. Pretty watery mouthfeel but that is not out of line with a beer that is only 4.5%

Overall, I'm not really impressed. If this was cleaned up a little it could really shine.
