Similar to Belgian-style Strong Pales, the Tripel is often characterized by its lighter color, spicy aromatics, and complexity. Brother David’s Triple is brewed with copious amounts of pale malts as well as Belgian candi sugar, giving it a deep golden hue, medium body and rich mouth feel. The dense head gives off aromas of candied orange peel, clover honey, pears, and a hint of freshly mown fields. The fruity esters and spicy hop flavors balance the phenolic characteristics leading to a peppery, citrusy finish.

12oz : chalice

Hazy, brassy, dark golden with a foamy, off white head, that is unfortunately fairly short lived.

Nothing particularly exciting. A subtle blend of clove phenols, lightly bready, sweet notes, faint fruity, apple/pear esters in the finish.

Medium body, foamy carbonation.

A tasty, well done Triple. On the palate nothing about it really stood out for me, but it wasn't lacking either. I would have enjoyed a more prominent, long lasting foamy head.

Not really the best at reviewing beers yet, but am I the only one who got a somewhat metallic taste from this? Maybe my palate is messed up but I could swear I had a bit of a metallic aftertaste. It's not bad, the sweetness is a bit overpowering, but I really don't have much experience tasting Belgian beers. I wouldn't jump to taste this again, but I'm just trying to expand my horizons. And I'm definitely gonna work on better reviews. Cheers!

Appearance- Pours up a good amount of head which has a little bit of retention. The head is slightly off-white while the body is a pale to medium golden amber amber which appears as a pale golden amber when held up to the light.

Nose- Simplistic but it covers the basics. Banana and cloves which impart a slight ashiness. Small hint of spice, some coriander. A little bit stronger from the bottle than the glass. Some breadiness.

Taste- Starts off with banana/caramel with a front which is way too sweet which leads into an ashy but strangely mute clove. Some bandaid and a overly sweet finish that makes me think of candied popcorn and butter a little bit. Very messy and the 10% doesn't help at all. Burnt caramel and a slight bit of saccharine cherry and raisins. Cloves show themselves more and become quite disconcerting. The ratings suggested an average Tripel but this is downright unpleasant at the moment. Seems more like a phenolic barleywine rather than a Tripel. Very boozy as well. On top of being messy, it seems a little thin as well. Definitely, a below average beer. There's a weird grassiness to the finish that really mingles with the alcohol on the linger. Very strawlike. Does mellow out considerably but does not rise to average. Does become drinkable.

Mouthfeel- Almost medium bodied with lots of syrup to the texture. Over carbonated.

Drinkability- Barely. Very harsh linger with a bad aftertaste. Cheap but could never be cheap enough.

Overall- Below average. I would not try this and I will not be buying it again. Very close to being a drain pour and I've never drain poured a beer before. However, I do have a beer that promises to be awful so I might just do that tonight.

Quick review: bought this for 2.50 a bomber. Can't beat that price, even if this isn't the greatest Abbey Style Trippel I've had.

Good mouthfeel, good carbonation. Flavors and scent are reminiscent of apple. Also traditional Belgian yeast, malt, and floral notes are present, but the beer is slightly lighter overall than a traditional Trippel. Not boozy or harsh.

Bottom line: representative of the style without innovating. On the lighter side, with hints of apple. Worth the price.

From my tasting notes: The Brother David’s Triple poured darker than most triples with more of an amber color than the typical golden color. It had a good fruity Belgian yeast aroma that yielded a sweet and fruity flavor with plenty of the Belgian yeast notes of candy sugars and cloves. There was little to no perceptible bitterness to this incredibly smooth and highly drinkable triple. It had a high ABV which was well hidden and made it presence known as I drank this tasty triple too quickly.

A-It pours an apple juice color, very hazy with a medium size off white creamy head that has decent retention and very good lacing.
S-For being such a "big" beer the aroma is quite mild which is a little disappointing. But it has noticable fresh bread yeasty aromatics with noticable earthy hops. There are some barn yard characteristics to the nose as well. Very pleasant but could be more in your face in my opinion.
F-The first thing that comes to mind, is some green apple notes along with some fresh bread yeasty flavors and very grassy hop notes in the finish, "grassy" in a good way. Very barn yard like altogether.
M-For this being such a big beer, it's very medium body, it's very balanced (not to sweet and not to dry) I think the carbonation level of this beer helps it to not have such a thick body. It's interesting, it does have a slight sweetness on the tongue but it finishes semi dry.
O-My overall impression for this beer is that it's a quite decent interpretation of an Abbey Style Ale made in America. I am glad that I tried this. And will recommned this beer to any of my friends who particularly enjoy Abbey Style Ales.

Smell: Some citrus, banana, no different than your average Tripel.

Appearance: Bubbly, goldish,, minor lacing.

Taste: I will say this, I cannot taste the alcohol. Champagne style, banana, citrus, nothing special.

Mouthfeel: Not much body at all. Disappointing.

Overall: Average.

Probably my least favorite from Anderson Valley. A little disappointed.

Pretty good take on a Tripel. Poured a hazy orange/light amber color into my Chimay goblet. The delicately bubbly head vanishes quickly with little lacing on the glass.

Smell is light fruit, apples, pears, apricot. Some pepper and Belgian yeast here as well. Pretty good.

Taste is very good. The light fruit, Belgian yeast, pepper are all readily apparent. Could have used even more yeastiness. Some of my favorite Tripels (both Belgian and American) have a taste almost like ripe cheese associated with the yeast.

Mouthfeel is rich, the spices do their thing. A slight more alcohol burn than I am used to with a good Tripel but it is not that off-putting.

Good Tripel, nice slow sipping beer. Well worth a try.

A - bright clear copper golden, one finger of head retained at half that, minor spots of clingly lacing
S - decent banana and clove esters, grains, sour citrus, generally fairly mild aromas
T - similar to the nose but with bigger sourness and a bit of a plastic thing going on, its not bad but its not up to snuff here
M - fairly light and decently carbonated, somewhat sour with an alcohol dry heat showing up in the finish
O - unfortunately not all that impressed with this brew, it has the potential to be a solid offering but between the plastic flavour sneaking in and the alcohol presence not integrated so elegantly it just doesn't make a name for itself, not a try if its in front of you but not worth seeking out

Appearance- sparkling light orange with coarse 1 finger of offwhite foam on top. Doesn't linger some light lacing .New bottle style with antler bear.

Aroma- watermelon, slightly medicinal, some esthers, banana some stonefruit plum nectarine.

Taste- Vinous, boozy and chlorinated?! Not a lot of maltiness just booze and esthers. Resiny hops that are just destroyed by the booze.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied but slick and tongue coating. The cough medicine lingers on the palette a bit too long.

Overall- i would take a less alcoholic version of this that had a more rounded malt profile and a bit more hop presence. Maybe I am prejudice but if its gonna be this strong it needs to be a bit more balanced maybe even a touch darker. Maybe its a triple that drinks like a quad, all i know is I probably wouldn't get another.

I do not understand all the low reviews on this beer, but i guess that just goes to show how incredibly different one pallet is from the next.

10% abv..i expected a punch in the mouth when i went to take my first sip, but this absolutely blew me away..one of the cleanest and smoothest beers i have had, maybe ever..easily in my top 3 favorite beers..a completely genius brew

some dark fruits that lead to a sweet and full taste. this was part of a mix six i made and has since become an old favorite.

Served from a 22 ounce bottle bought just a few weeks ago.

A --- very soft and weak straw yellow

S --- my favorite part of the beer. I pick up apple, banana, cloves, yeast, and earthiness

T --- mild, sourness and watery

M --- low carbonation and little body

O --- not my favorite style of beer and this isn't going to change my mind.

Apple cider in color and appearance this is full of bubbly carbonation. Bubbling so quickly a head could never amass. Has an almost champagne like quality.

The scent is quaint and sweet with touches of apple, pear, grapes, dried fruit and malt.

The taste is strong and delivers a powerful alcohol warmth. Many of the flavors dont come out strongly. Hearty malt, touches of prune or plum there's a bit of alcohol brashness at the end. I get raisin in the body of the taste but it is fleeting. Overall not a bad beer but I'd like the fruit to take the forefront a little more.

Anderson Valley is one of those breweries that flies below people's radar. Located in Boonville California, they pride themselves on their green approach to brewing. From their use of solar power (advertised on every cap atop their bottles), to their recycling of water, to their ecological approach to disposing of spent grain, they try to minimize their impact upon the environment.

While they are best known for their amber ale, I picked up a bottle of their tripel recently and wanted to see how a brewery located in the mountains of California approached a belgian-style tripel.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a goblet. Pours an ever-so-slightly hazy topaz/amber color, with a thin white head that reduces to a tight ring around the glass.

Aroma is quite mild, with hints of grapes, apples and honey. There is the faintest whif of alcohol, but it is quite subdued - a surprise, given the fact this clocks in at 10% ABV!

Taste is similarly subdued. Sweet, though not as sweet as other tripels, with loads of vine and tree fruit, it is a heavier tripel than I've had before. Apples, pears, plums, grapes and hints of melon are all present in the flavor.While I appreciate that it is not as cloyingly sweet as some tripels I've had, it is still missing something in the flavor that results in it having a flatter or dimmer taste than a really good tripel should.

Medium bodied, with little to no aftertaste, it does not taste or feel like a beer approaching the strength of a glass of wine.

Tripels are one of those styles I have to be in the mood for. I ususally find them to be too sweet and taxing to easily finish, and will rarely want a second after I've had the first. While Brother David's Triple is flavorful and drinkable, it is still a tripel. If you're a fan of the style, I'd give it a try.

A nice finger of head on a clear, dark copper colored body.
The aroma is caramel, bread and candy.
A really sweet start on the taste, that continues middle to end. Kind of malty. A little alcohol heat at the end too. The sweetness is overbearing though.
A little fizzy texture, moderate carbonation and medium body.
The sweetness was too much for me. Other than that, it's fine.

Pours a nutty orange with minimal foam and some lacing.

Lots of carbonation from inital pour from bottle
Has a very bready flavor, hints of molasses, with notes of pear, banana, & slight granny smith apple finish.
The mouthfeel is a little on the thick side.
The complexity rises as the beer gets warmer and all the flavors become more fluent.
My wife and I really enjoy this beer and find it comparable to some of the more expensive true belgian strong ales.
With its high alcohol content, this one is a sipper, and we usually find ourselves maxxed at 2.

Pours honey gold, slight haze, off-white head at half an inch dissipates to a lacing relatively quickly.

Smells of apples, white wine and bretty yeast. Some fresh grass malt dryness.

Sweet grape and apple fruitiness with lemon and coriander hints and mild dry grassy malts. Hint of sugary honey-esque flavor.

Full body with light stingy carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

A really nice Belgian style ale, good flavor, hides its strength well, and has a unique profile. Liked this one a lot and would seek it out again.

Brown reddish color a little cloudy. Smells licorice and alcohol. Alcohol is also noticeable in its taste, hard to hide 10% anyway. Tastes strong notes of caramel, apricot, cloves and licorice, with some spicy twist. Body is liquor like. Tasted better once I let it warm up, though hard to beat the main Belgians in their tradition.

I have had a select few of Anderson Valley beers (canned) and have always been plenty satisfied. This was a nice surprise to see a different style and a bomber I did not recognize.

A- The Triple poured a nice true amber color with a fairly decent head that faded pretty quickly, with some nice lacing.

S - Smells like a typical Abbey Style Ale, with a bit more malty sweetness than I'd expect. I do get some spice... cinnamon and honey.

T - Taste is creamy and sweet and not overwhelming. A small amount of alcohol comes thru after swallowng, but at 10% this is nothing anyone should complain about. It is a nice fall beer for northern california!

M - For this style of beer, feels smooth and mild all the way thru.

Overall, a fairly good triple, but as others stated... not going to win over any Abbey lovers. I would recommend you definitely give it a shot, especially if you are a fan of Anderson Valley.

Appearance - Pours a golden copper colour with a 1/2 finger width of bubbly head.

Smell - Plum, cherry, caramalts, yeast, some fruity hops.

Taste - Plum and cherry flavours stand out, followed by the caramalts and hops. More fruit-based in flavour.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes a little sweet.

Overall - A different take on a tripel by Anderson Valley. Although I appreciated the fruit flavours taking precedence, I would have liked to pick up on more hops. Better options out there for tripels, but worthy of a try.

Unusually warm day in October so a Triple sounded good.

12 oz bottle poured into a Snifter glass.

Deep Carmel color, very sweet fruit smell. Also getting a bread-y smell coming from the beer.

Poured a thin 1 finger head which quickly went away.

Medium sweetness, initially with a medium mouthful.

Overall a solid, but not over whelming addition to the style. If new to the style its a solid intro beer. I find it a bit heavier than others within the style. Darker in color than most as well.

Lightly chilled bomber into a 12 oz snifter. No discernible bottling date.

Look- Fizzy off-white head dissipates within a second or two, nice medium amber. No lace. Suspiciously clean glass and bottle for "never heat pasteurized or sterile filtered" as the bottle claims.

Smell- Caramel, raisin, cinnamon, mace, sweet, mild Belgian yeasty character. A bit of Fusel as it warms. Subtle.

Taste- Toffee, French bread, nougat and fresh ground coffee towards the end. Surprisingly plain. Sweet, but not unpleasantly so. Mild herbal/grassy/tealike hops make a gasp towards the finish. Finishes pretty clean, although I get a vague popcorn feel.

Mouthfeel- Medium-full, crisp on the sip, slick on the swallow. Moderate warming after the fact. No hint of booze. Easy drinking... perhaps too easy.

Overall- Not what I expected, and not going to win over any hardcore Belgian fans, but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. +.5 for drinking like 4%

I was excited to try this offering from Anderson Valley Brewing company. I really enjoy a good Triple and since it is from a semi-local brewing company I wanted to give it a try. It smelled fantastic when I opened the bottle and had a really nice color when I poured it into the glass. There was very little head and it did not last long. The flavor did not match the smell. It had kind of a sour milk taste to it that lingered in the back of my mouth that made me crave for something sweet. The 10%abv was well masked by the aftertaste. Definitely not one of their better offerings.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy bone colored head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, fruit, spices, and alcohol. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick and a distinct hair spray flavor with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty average beer all around that is drinkable but nothing worth revisiting in my opinion.

A - I guess this is what an Abbey Triple looks like. Dark amber hue with a red tone and a 1/2 inch of frothy head. Much darker than you typical triples.

S - Smells mostly of spicy yeasts, malt sugars, and a touch of sour funk. Bread smells as well but and mild ethanol like alcohol.

T - Well it's not as boozy as I expected but it seems like the spicy and lemon like aspect I see in the style is cover up by mildly fruity yeasts and sugars. Mild burn in the finish.

M - Medium to heavy its a sipper for sure. Could use a touch more carbonation though.

Overall this was an OK example of the style in fact kind of staggering since most triple's I had are 8-9% so not a bad high octane version at all.
