Wild Turkey BBA Salted Caramel PorterWild Turkey BBA Salted Caramel Porter

Brewed by:
Anderson Valley Brewing Company
California, United States

Style: English Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This slightly sweet porter is brewed with select additions of crystal malts and sea salt to create flavors of peanut brittle and caramel without being cloying. The medium body and mouthfeel lay the perfect foundation to support the rich vanilla, oak, and bourbon flavors imparted by extended aging in Wild Turkey barrels.

L: deep dark brown with rapidly rising bubbles supporting a moderate light tan head with fair retention

S: bourbon and oak with chocolate and caramel following close behind

T: caramel, chocolate, salt and bourbon lead to a salty caramel aftertaste.

F: very creamy and full bodied with very mild warming and medium soft carbonation.

O: a beer to serve with dessert or to simply savor at the end of the evening

On tap at the Greenville SC Pour Taproom.
Lots of bourbon in the aroma and the flavor: thankfully this is a fine flavor that mixes really well with the malts. The salt is only evident in the aftertaste while the caramel is hidden in the mix. Fine lingering aftertaste.

22oz bottle, from notes - hmmmmm...Wild Turkey barrels have thus far not exactly blown up my proverbial skirt, so sigh, with apologies to David Coverdale, here I go again.

This beer pours a clear (I presume), dark red-brick brown colour, with two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly beige head, which leaves some looming iceberg profile lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of semi-sweet, grainy caramel malt, a touch of toffee pudding, subtle cheap Yankee whiskey barrel notes (vanilla, spicy rye, corn, oak, and dirty white tank tops), bittersweet chocolate, and weak earthy, leafy, and weedy hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, a further understated biscuity saltwater taffy essence, tame cocoa powder, an even more ethereal Bourbon County whiskey character than that of the nose (vanilla and wet wood staves, mostly), and some simple earthy, musty, and gently floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is adequate for the job at hand, via its structurally sound frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and generally smooth, just a wee gritty barrel stripe mucking things up a bit. It finishes off-dry, but not by much, as the malt seems to be on the edge of a precipice, ready to topple over, or something.

Overall, this is a decently rendered BBA salted caramel porter (minuscule rendering intended), as the 'chosen' barrel influence is minimal at best, which goes a long way in keeping this offering on the right and just side of drinkable. Yeah, the ABV could be more than a mite bit more elevated for such a thing, but hey - a 'sessionable', Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter sounds like quite the lark, doesn't it?

Appearance - Pours dark brown with dark, rusty orange edging. Near two-finger width head with good retention. Leaves a mostly barren surface once the head has died down, with no lacing to speak of.

Smell - Good aroma, hitting on notes of caramel, salt, chocolate, a bit of vanilla and oak, and light roasted malt.

Taste - Starts with a bit of wheat-like malt flavor and lesser caramel. Light vanilla, chocolate and some saltiness comes through shortly after. Finishes much the same, with malty character accented with the lesser sweetness provided by the aforementioned character. Not much influence from the Wild Turkey barrels.

Mouthfeel - On the heavier side of medium-bodied with moderate, tingly carbonation. Slick, smooth texture that goes down easy before a slightly dry finish.

Overall - Pretty good, but not as flavorful as one might by led to believe based on the marketing. In all, a pretty good brew, but I can't help feeling cheated by the promise of something sounding so flavorful and to come out as tame as it is. It's well balanced, in the least.

Walked past this twice in the beer store. Hmmm.... barrel aged, salted caramel, no reviews.... ok, gotta try.
Poured into my snifter.
A - Pours very dark and clear with a thick tannish white head.
S - The aroma is caramel, sweet and just a hint of barrel.
T - I was worried this beer would be overly sweet and it is not. This tastes like an oreo cookie with a caramel center. The caramel is more noticeable but there is a subtle chocolate in the background, with just a little barrel on the finish. This beer tastes the same cold as it does at room temp.
M - A little more carbonation that I like. Medium mouth feel.
O - This is an interesting beer. The caramel is enjoyable and is a nice change from flavors like coffee, vanilla, chocolate, etc. Again, this is not an overly sweet beer and does not strike me as a desert beer. The low ABV was a pleasant surprise and would make this a good choice for those who don't care for the high ABV barrel aged beers. I like this and would drink again.

From the 22 oz bottle in a snifter. This interesting porter pours a nice deep brown with bronze highlights and a moderate head of off white foam that settles to a thick ring, light pool, and subtle lacing. Nose of light bourbon, subtle cocoa, and light toffee. Flavors lightly exceed the nose with caramel and light cocoa on the front and sides, bourbon takes hold on the middle with light toffee and vanilla, and fades into the rear with a very subtle light sea salt note. Nice mouth feel, warming from the booze without being overbearing, and slick with light carbonation.

A nice addition to the brewers profile which is solid and appreciated.

Anderson Valley's Salted Caramel Bourbon Barrel aged Porter. 6% ABV.

A: A finger and a half of slightly tan head. Pours an earthy brown. Dark brown, nearly black in the glass, with a medium brown tinge. Honey brown in the dimple. Decent sheeting; slight lacing.

S: Dark caramel, bordering on a light toffee. Light char note. Light salt (although, following a gose, my perception might be skewed). Faint coffee, but it's masked by the caramel aroma. Actually, very reminiscent of chocolate covered salted caramel candy.

T/MF: The body is a little on the light side. Coffee is more pronounced on the palate. Salted caramel is more subdued, with a bittersweet chocolate edge.

I wish it was thicker bodied, and higher in alcohol, but it's not bad.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.

Pours a deep mahogany color with a tight, off-white head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of caramel malt notes with a light layer of bourbon barrel.

Tastes of the caramel notes mostly with only hints of the bourbon. Malts lead off with caramel and toffee leading the way along with a bit of sweetness. Bourbon notes add next with some faint oak and vanilla notes. Some earthy hops add towards the end. Finishes with a bit of lingering malt.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a solid barrel aged porter, but nothing really stands out about it.

A: The beer appears black when viewed from afar but when held up to the light it is dark reddish brown in color. It poured with a thick collar of beige bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of caramel syrup are present in the nose along with notes of chocolate and faint hints of bourbon.
T: The taste has flavors of caramel with notes of chocolate and salt plus some hints of bourbon from the barrel aging. The chocolatey flavors linger into the finish.
M: It feels a little more than medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer makes for a very nice salted caramel porter but is a little weak on the bourbon barrel aging.
