Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Hop Ottin’ IPA is brewed and dry-hopped with copious amounts of Columbus and Cascade. This beer is a showcase of the bright citrusy aromas, bold grapefruit and pine-like flavors, and resiny bitterness that hop heads crave. With a brilliant, deep amber color and solid malt backbone, hints of citron, roses, and bergamot climax with a dry, herbal finish in this well-balanced interpretation of a West Coast IPA.

Solar powered Elk piss it is not. It's a hoppy foam face IPA with 7.0 power. Something to admire. After it settles, the head of beer looks like some toxic creek water foam, the kind that washes up on shore or swirls around in sludge filled eddy. Yes it is that good. The hoppy smell is not up to par with a Dogfish 90 minute choke hold but super IPAs can get old and expensive when you drink often. Did I say 7.0 ABV - 6 pack cans for a lot less. Taste..slightly citrus and malty..good enough for the dude. Pour it and ask your girl friend what she thinks of that...

Bottle pour into large, chilled mug.

A...pours a pretty clear

orange with a perfect, pillowy, off white, 2 finger head.

S...Pleasant aroma, not quite as strong a smell as I would expect. A bit more earthy or even mossy than the citrus or fruit I would expect.

T...Fantastic. from the first sip it is just right. A malty sweetness right up front. I'm getting some fruit elements, apricot and some background citrus. Then the hops kick in with a smack in the face bitterness that cuts everything else off. Clean finish.

M...Again, just right. The carbonation is just right when you can't explain it. Its not high carbonation or flat. Not sticky but just thick enough. Heavy but not too much.

O... This is a winner. Full bodied, packed with complex flavors. I am a huge IPA fan and this would be in my top 5. If you like IPA you could not be disappointed with this brew.

Pours a rich golden copper, topped by a creamy head leaving lacing that lingers longer than many IPA's. It also shows consistent active bubbling. The smell is mildly reflective of earthy spring pine needles, and perhaps grapefruit. It fills the mouth with a full frothy front load, and a slightly astringent dry finish, a perfect blend of malt and hops. That quality is also present in the taste - the dry hoppy flavor of an IPA, but a warm unexpected malt balance with hints of toasted carmel. To me, this beer straddles the line of an IPA and a top notch Amber. I love Hop Ottin.

12 oz bottle acquired newly from the MLCC with a date stamp on teh neck that us too small and smudged to be read. Poured ~6C into a beer mug.

Pours a gorgeous clear amber with a frothy head that leaves tons of gorgeous lacing the whole way through. The nose is muted with light pine notes along with some maltiness. A nice body with a good amount of malt flavours not normally in an IPA, including bread, crackers and caramel. That said, the body lacks a substantial hop presence. Mainly pine and earth come through with hints of citrus fruit. Body is well carbonated and has a biting bitterness, though somehow comes across as watery.

For a supposedly top shelf IPA this beer has the IBUs and a great malt backbone for it, but is lacking the quality I love most of an IPA (especially one that is 7%!): HOPS! Where are the hops? Muted aromas and weak flavours make me think that the MLCC brought in a pallet of really old IPA. Shame on you MLCC & Anderson Valley for pawning off old product
