Review from 2/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a very dark brown, appearing black. Roasted malt, light coffee and chocolate aroma Flavor follows with toasted malt, coffee and chocolate. A nice, well balanced oatmeal stout. Medium bodied. Moderate intensity of flavor, but smooth, lightly creamy and tasty. A very nice stout.

Pours almost black with a fluffy tan head. Smells of roasted mats, coffee, and chocolate. Feels smooth and creamy. Medium thick body. Tastes nice and bitter. I can actually taste the oats. A hint of coffee and dark chocolate as well.
A very nice oatmeal stout.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter.

Appearance: The beer pours dark brown to black with no light coming through. There is a half finger of light tan head that fades to a ring around the pour.

Smell: Smooth and roasty here. I'm getting some dark fruit and dark chocolate notes as well. Just enough sweetness.

Taste: This is a very smooth tasting stout with just enough roast. I'm getting some dark chocolate with dark fruit and there might be a hint of vanilla in the background. The finish is roasty and slightly bitter.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with full, fluffy carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This is a really easy to drink stout. Nice roast flavors, but it still manages to be very smooth. I would have more.

16oz Growler from Beverage World. Served at around 40-45F and allowed to warm.

Pours dark brown to black with a two finger brown head that leaves some lacing and recedes to a small cap.

Aroma is very roasty, chocolate, some coffee & dark fruits, caramel, minimal hops, good strength.

Flavor follows with strong chocolate notes, roasted malts, coffee, dark fruits, caramel, moderate sweetness, mild roasty bitterness, minimal alcohol.

Mouthfeel is light/medium bodied, smooth, slick, moderate carbonation.

Nice Oatmeal Stout. Great chocolate notes, very drinkable.

Poured from a bottle into a Pint Glass.

A- Nearly black as night brew topped with a minimal blanket of brownish/tannish frothy head. Evenly distributed lacing clings to side of the glass, looks like the remains of a chocolate milk shake.

S- Super chocolatey sweetness floods the nose but is far from overwhelming, yum. Roasted malts and fresh coffee grounds with just a faint whiff of bitter hops are also present. Aromas don't fade as I continue to sip away.

T/M- Wow, a boatload of super sweet roasted malts has taken over the palate. Such a smooth yet full bodied Oatmeal Stout. So robust, the coffee profile lays low but is there, and just enough of it to make things interesting. Cant get over the super creaminess of this one. Hops leave just a pinch of bitterness to add to this already complex brew. Chocolatey, malty, madness is left dancing all over the palate.

O- Sammy Smith was my gateway to stouts and has held a special spot in my heart for a long time. Barney Flats has just unseated it however, and is now my favorite Oatmeal Stout to date. Pairs like heaven with a slice of my wife's chocolate pie.

A: Dark brown with a big tan head... Has some reddish tinge to it. Looks smooth.

S: Not getting a lot here. Although that means no bad smells either. A hint of coffee and chocolate....

T: Oats really come through and are complimented with roastyness and smokiness.

M: Medium body which was a pleasant surprise given just about every other low ABV stout I've had is super light. Carbonation hits a little bit hard.

Overall a great beer! I like most stouts but this one really was better than many others. A good body, good flavor, great balance. If you're looking for a lower ABV stout this is a solid bet.

I don't get the reviews for this one. I'm not too thrilled with this stout. I've had way better. Black with a small light brown head that doesn't ever fully leave. Sweet smelling with a touch of coffee. Earthy flavors up front.

I never really get a hint of alcohol. Coco, dirt and oats start our smooth then turn bitter leaving me with a coffee like after taste. I felt the mouthfeel was too thin. Glad I tried it, but I don't see myself seeking it out in the future.

Dark nearly impenetrable blackish brown with a deep amber red glow around the edges when back lit by a strong light. A big foamy chocolate brown head forms leaving loads of creamy lacing.

Dark roasty malts, chocolate and coffee fill the aroma in copious amounts.

The flavor is full of dark roasted grain bitterness and dark roasted malt sweetness, full of coffee and chocolate notes blended and smoothed out by the addition of oatmeal. Warming as always brings out more complexity and mellowness.

Mouthfeel is medium, somewhat chewy and has excellent smoothness body boosted by the oatmeal. Carbonation is medium and lends an added creaminess to the body as well.

An excellent everyday stout though I'd have to do a line up to say it was my favorite. Definitely in the running!
