BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Anderson Valley Brewing Company
California, United States
avbc.com

Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewed with a heelch* of Columbus, Chinook, and Cascade hops, our double IPA has a palate pleasing bitterness that is carefully balanced with a full-bodied malt foundation. With a deep color of polished brass and a nose that sings of pink grapefruit and redwood needles, the rich biscuit-like malt flavors intertwine with hints of vanilla, mangos, and peppercorns leading to a deep, warming finish. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a shaker pint glass.

A: Slightly hazy, brassy golden color with one finger of white foam head. Heavy lacing remains on the glass.

S: Classic grapefruit juice and pine foliage are noteworthy, although carbon dioxide and a chemical plastic thread tend to be disruptive. Malt goes relatively unnoticed, maybe some weak and ambiguous honey-like quality. No alcohol is detected.

T: Begins off-dry, with chewy malts that are heavy on the crystal, and pungent hops aromatics that come across initially as very one-note of pine. Acidity contributes brightness into the middle where hops flavors turn more spicy-herbaceous as bitterness begins to take hold. Honey from the smell is more well-established in the finish, and bitterness is moderate and long-lasting. Some alcohol vapors seem to linger on the palate, amidst the bitterness.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, sticky and slightly acidic on the palate, with brisk carbonation.

D/O: This strong IPA appears to place a heavy reliance upon Columbus-style hops, resulting in a questionable outcome. Its hops qualities come across as brash and heavy-handed for the style; focused, but in a misguided sort of way.

This is an underrated DIPA. It's not going to make any top 10 lists, but Anderson Valley was able to create a really hoppy beer that has some semblance of balance. There is a lot going on in this beer, but none of the flavors jump ahead of the others. Tropical fruits, caramelized onions, and citrus all blend really well together with a nice malt backbone.

I love IPA's that are well balanced and unique. Anyone can throw way too many hops into a kettle, but the balancing act is the real art. This is a nice warming beer to drink on a cold and snowy day.

Very underrated BA score, but I'm certain it will go up with more reviews. Excellent DIPA with a great balance of citrus, pine and hops.

A- 12 oz bottle into pint glass. Pours a dark brass. Light, fluffy head that dissipates quickly. Very nice lacing. translucent.

S- Smell a level of smokiness with citrus hops...possibly grapefruit. Moderately aromatic.

T- Hops upfront with some floral notes. Tones of mango. More pine flavor than i expected. Lots of biscuit flavors as well. Good balance. Not a huge malt base, but decent. Powerful hops are expected from this DIPA with an IBU around 100. Robust, bitter, dry finish.

M- Full bodied, dry, good carbonation

O- Definitely a different flavor than most west coast IPAs, but pretty darn good none the less. The distinct woodsy, smoky, biscuit flavor may be an acquired taste that others may enjoy even more than I would. I would possibly purchase again but a little over priced.

Very good. Doesn't have that strong ipa taste to it. Just wish I could get it in New Mexico!

'Tis the season to be fooled by refreshing IPAs!
When you are in the mood and the drinks go down easy (and often), you are bound to find most IPAs to your liking.
Don't be fooled with this one. You can tell that something is missing after one sip and most certainly after several. Even though it's boozy, it lacks the necessary body to battle with the big boys.
Of course it's worth a try (several, in fact) but if you have a choice, pick something else.
