Anderson Valley : Basil IPA

Pours a deep amber/orange. Fine clarity. Soapy white head and plenty of webbed trails of lace left behind on the glass. Aroma of flower, some citrus and sweet basil. In the taste, bitter hop character is strong as well as a pronounced influence of basil. Very herbal and earthy , just a bit dirty tasting. Kind of like an over herbed Saison mixed with an American IpA. The taste isn't bad really, but it does get tiring and is a bit too herbaceous for my liking. Medium bodied, fairly smooth. Overall, this is a nice experiment, good to try one and be done with in my opinion. If you like herbal saisons, pale ales and strong hop character, give it a spin.

On-tap at Mad Mex Robinson for IPA Week.

Amber in color, truly. Lightly laced. Looks decent.

Pine and herbal hops with a kiss of basil; almost unintendedly. Toastiness and light toffee gruff from the malts.

Wowsers! Very herbal. Basil and sage and pine; all contributed by hops and supplemented with bitterness. A lot of bitterness. Some attached sweetness lingering, yet the toastiness is all dry. Finishes like a basil leaf lodged in the throat. Aggressive, yet impressive.

Softer in body with some spikes of carb bubbles abound. Not bad. A little harsh, but okay.

Nice stab at a basil IPA. I'd try it again.

Pours a bright and clear light amber color with a very nice off white head.

Aromas are of hard candies, some grapefruit, pine, and a hint of basil.

Taste is like the nose. Slightly sweet up front, hard candies, and creamy. Finish has bitter grapefruits, some pine, and basil. At first I found the basil flavor to be subtle, but as I drank it, I noticed it more and more and it detracted from the beer.

Mouthfeel is nice and full, with food carbonation.

Overall, it's certainly unique, and flavorful. But as I mentioned, the basil flavor wore on me as I drank this. Worth trying, but I'd recommend a small glass.

This is a delicious beer. I don't know why this isn't rated 90+ on this site. The basil flavor is subtle but definitely there. Kind of a malty base on the front with the hops kicking in on the finish. Really quite tasty.
