Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
With a brilliant, deep copper hue and creamy beige-colored head, our Fall Hornin’ Pumpkin Ale has inviting aromas of caramelized malt and baking bread with highlights of cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin and seasonal spices. The pleasantly creamy mouthfeel and silky body embrace the sweet caramel flavors and tang of spices (with just hint of hops) that ends in a smooth, round finish.

12 oz. can

Pours dark maroon with a creamy light khaki colored foam head. Smells like autumn spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, roasty toasted bready malt, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, some pumpkin, with earthy woody grassy pine. Tastes like spices, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, roasty toasted bready malts, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, mild pumpkin, with earthy woody grassy pine. Feels medium-light bodied, creamy with moderate carbonation. Overall a nice spicy pumpkin ale.

Clear, dark, caramel colored brew with a light tan, foamy head that leaves big bands of lacing. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and big hits of cinnamon and pie spices. The taste is lightly sweet caramel with a decent amount of cinnamon spiciness. There is enough carbonation to sting the tongue and add to the spiciness. Really tasty pumpkin brew that is lower in sweetness and higher in spiciness than most in this class.

Beautiful amber colour, though the head of foam is very modest. Smell of malt and spices like laurel and thyme. Taste has a sweet profile of pumpkin and malt, with lots of winter spices kicking in. Mouth feel is soft and smooth. Not a very complex beer, but all in all a nice one for a gold autumn/winter night.

Dark brown with an orange tinge, filtered, but hard to see though, lots of carbonation and topped with 4 fingers of brownish head.

Smells totally of pumpkin spices, like Starbucks pumpkin latte (the via packet version). Pumpkin, spices, and a hint of cardamon.

Tastes of pumpkin spices, a hint of cardamon, a biscuity, dark rye bread component, and a deep toasted bitterness.

Medium, chewy and bready body, moderate, soda like carbonation. Mostly dry with a hint of sweetness.

Great pumpkin brew, so stoked to have found on wishbeer in Asia. Drinking on Nov 11th, 2016 in Chiang Mai. Really its a great rep of the style, dunno why the others have rated it as a good, but not stellar pumpkin ale.

Didn't know Anderson Valley made a pumpkin ale until my wife saw it today in cans. I love the dark amber color and appearance. The smell is outstanding - I get a lot of spices up front. The taste is very smooth and easy drinking for a dark pumpkin ale. It is on par with Elysian's Nightowl but lighter in the feel. Taste - I'm getting a lot of spice up front with some pumpkin pie, allspice, cinnamon, a little banana and graham. I still think the higher ABV imperial pumpkin ales top my list (Elysian, Southern Tier, Schlafly) but this one is very close behind them. Could do a seperate rating system with non-imperial pumpkin ales. In that case this and Elysian's Nightowl would top the list.

L - Slightly more than a finger's worth of late developing compact light-to-medium khaki colored froth with a bit of a rocky top... Impressive retention for the style especially given the limited amount of head... The head never really dissipates, rather it just settles a bit and becomes uber creamy... The color is darker than expected and takes on a medium brown appearance with some warm caramel notes when back lit... A moderate bit of moderate paced small bubbled carbonation throughout...

S - Literally smells like a fresh pumpkin pie... Had I been blindfolded I would have been shocked to find this wasn't a freshly baked pumpkin pie... A touch sweeter than it is spicy... Wonderful balance and depth with each whiff...

T - The sweetness fades on the palate... Meanwhile the crust and spice components are dialed up several notches in terms of complexity... There is also a slight expression of hops on the deep finish... Again, good depth and complexity... Each subsequent sip reveals a slightly new angle to the flavor profile...

F - Medium bodied... Sturdy... Some brisk carbonation... The finish is a bit on the chalky side...

O - After a close to a decade of seeking out all the major pumpkin ales, I finally have had the opportunity to "check" this on off... Unique and a cut above the competition... The end result is a brew that proves to be a bit more than the sum of its parts... Among the best looks and smell in the pumpkin ale realm... The taste is solidly above average... A richer and creamier feel would go a long way to making this one truly special and world class... As it is, Fall Hornin is a really really good seasonal that I'll be seeking out in future years...
