I visited Fitzpatrick’s Brewing Company midday, shortly after the lunch hour and the place was empty. We had to park in the rear of the store (there is no on street parking), metered parking in back. There was only one visible employee, she was both our waitress and bartender, she was tremendous friendly and very nice. However she never really would give a straight answer for a question. For example: “What do you have on tap?” “Do you like light or dark?” “What salad dressing do you have? “Do you want creamy or oily?” It wouldn’t have been such an issue but she fail to tell me about some of the products they offer because of the way she would answer questions. Anyway…

The décor was very bar-like. It reminded me of a bar my dad use to bartend at when I was a kid. It is all old, worn wood, it seem natural and used. I like the place. I didn’t look at the adjoining rooms but the bar area is rather large. My girlfriend wasn’t to pleased with the small, dirty bathrooms. There is about seven booths, a few high tables by the pool table and jukebox. The bar was rather long and had a good number of stools.

On-tap they had about seven handles of there own beers (some could have been duplicates), they also had Bud Light and PBR… even though they brew their own light beer. They also make their own soda. The beer I sampled was pretty good (reviewed two of them).

The food was great. The portions were large, and there was good variety on the menu, and it was rather inexpensive. I had the Top Sirloin, 14-ounces of cooked to perfection beef with a baked potato and fresh green beans for $11. Awesome! However the salad dressing I had was awful… the waitress was making selecting the dressing so damn difficult I just picked the last thing she said. I guessed wrong.

I would absolutely visit again, the next time I am in Iowa City. Worth trying if you are in the area.

This place was a real gem. This is the best brewpub of the four I visited in Iowa while touring the state's minor league ballparks. The brewpub is located just a few blocks away from the University of Iowa campus. You feel the college town atmosphere right away; locals were generally a young crowd and it seems most of the staff were college students. I must have been waited on by none less than three waitresses. It's a very friendly place. The bar is way in the back and there is plenty of tables in the eating area. I sampled a pint of their brown ale and IPA. Both were quite good. Being hungry from the drive from Des Moines, I ordered their pizza and was told they had a two-for-one sale going. When they brought out both pizzas I realized I was in way over my head. Far too much for one person. The pizza was excellent. As I was leaving I took the second pizza with me in a box. Just as I exited through the back door, a coed rode by on her bicycle. I stopped her and said, "You don't know me from Jack, but this pizza is going to go to waste unless you take it with you". Since she noticed I had just walked out of Fitzpatrick's, she trusted me and said she would take it to her dorm and share it with friends. So there you go. I helped out a group of starving Hawkeye coeds.

The place has a Irish Pub style to it that I enjoyed. The quality of the beer was very good and they offer samplers of beer for 50 cents. Their selection of both food and beer warrants a 5 I believe. They have ~11 inhouse brewed beers, although it may be more with seasonals. As you may notice with the rest of my reviews, I don't usually check into the other beers available as I go to sample the local wares. Why get something I can get most anywhere else? I want original. Their selection of food is excellent as well. You can get the burgers and pizza, the usual pub grub, on up the scale to filet mignon and orange roughy. We chose the pizza and it was excellent. The bathrooms left a little to be desired, but it is a bar in a college town. I always enjoy getting new beers at brewpubs and this is no exception. Very good.
