McAuslan presents its New World take on the classic IPAs of the 19th-century England. In those days, the beers was brewed extra-strong and generously hopped to help it survive the long journey to India. Inspired by that history and today’s blod American IPAs, we’ve married Cascade and Chinook hops with a subtle blend of malts -anyone who appreciates strong ale will love it. Hop bitterness and malt smoothness: it’s a journey your taste buds will enjoy time and again.

473 mL can picked up at the LCBO; canned Sept 12 2014. Quebec might not be known for its IPAs, but McAuslan has not yet steered me wrong - so I'm still pumped to try this hopped ale from one of my favourite QC brewers. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a bright, clear orange-amber colour, topped with just under two fingers of soapy white head. Decent retention; it slowly seeps away over the next five minutes or so, leaving plenty of messy lace behind as it is reduced to a frothy collar and wispy cap. The aroma consists of a mixture of toffee malt sweetness, floral hops, and subdued citrus notes. Straightforward, but suitable for the style.
Not an exciting beer, but a proper English IPA, for sure. Caramel and toffee sweetness characterize the malt backbone, providing a sturdy platform the combination of floral, grassy, orange-citrusy hops which sum up the latter half of the flavour profile. Some light floral bitterness lingers into the aftertaste, with a hint of citrus; both fade gradually from the palate. Medium-bodied, with a moderate bite from the carbonation that provides this brew with a somewhat crisp, fulfilling feel in the mouth.
Final Grade: 3.93, an impressive B+. Despite the fact that it uses several North American hop strains, St-Ambroise IPA is not geared toward American IPA fans. The strongly floral qualities, prominent malt presence and (relatively) balanced nature of this beer place it firmly in English IPA territory - and it's a pretty good one, at that. This is a worthwhile, traditional IPA that would make for an excellent introduction to the style - definitely a solid strong ale that I'd consider purchasing again, if it were available locally.

Poured into an English pint glass.
The appearance was a dusty bronzed copper color with a thin cap of a little white foamy head sliding off subtly. Lots of big messy lace.
The aroma had a stifled grassy to citrusy hoppy crisp appeal rolling into some English malts, somewhat biscuit-like. Touch of herbal/medicinal fruity hop character coming in underneath.
The flavor was moderately malty sweet with some hop tickles of grassy citrusy bittersweetness. Mild aftertaste of biscuits, and grassy citrus herbal blends.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Enough hop harshness was there maintaining a fair bitter composure hitting my tongue. Decent carbonation and the ABV felt appropriate. Definitely a crisp herbal to citrusy finish.
Overall, seems like an American styled IPA trying to also be an English one. I could see myself coming back to if offered.

Like Quebecois bieres. Including this brewer's stout.
A) Pours a clear, dark copper with a finger of sudsy white head with lace galore and decent retention.
S) Ample northern nose of malts, honey, floral herbs and medicine cabinet - a bit of tincture.
T) Follows smell, trending toward an EIPA, but more interesting due to the medicine cabinet features of band-aid, tincture, witch hazel... along with hop bittering, caramel, apple peel, tobacco, sulphur, flint and pine. Complex, and better as it warms.
F) Feel is creamy and smooth, medium-plus bodied and well carbonated.
O) It's an English IPA, well-balanced with my roast chicken and veggies, and any barbecue foods.

a timeless flavor profile here indicative of the old world meeting the new. with a sturdy english malt built, yeast complexion, and more hop bitterness than flavor, but also with the classic northwestern pine and grapefruit essence, freshness, and spiciness of the well known american hops, and a smooth, balanced taste and feel overall, this is an ipa for those who like them a bit english and forever drinkable. biscuity slightly caramelized crystal type malt overtones in here, but a zippy bitter hoppiness too, it goes back and forth between rich and bready to fresh and citrusy, nice balance and interchange, but decidedly old school overall, it doesnt even taste or smell dry hopped in the now all important area of juiciness, and this has very much been evolved beyond in a lot of ways, but still stands as a monument to ipa as it used to be, when it was an english style, and a lot more malty and bitter than they tend to be these days. these guys are an institution in their part of the world, and its always a joy to try some of their beers. still my favorite from them is the oatmeal stout!

Nice copper coloured beer with good lace. Hoppy and bitter but tempered with a smooth feel. Good beer.
