Pilfered from the Old Man's fridge in November 2023 and drunk in March 2024.

Upon pouring, the beer is crystal clear and bright golden in colour. It has a bright white head that disappears quickly, leaving a thin white layer atop the beer. Lacing is present on the glass, and large bubbles flow rapidly towards the top. On appearance, it would rate higher if the head lasted longer.

The aroma is classic Euro lager, with sweet malt and corn/DMS-like notes. There's a touch of alcohol and soap in the nose, too, and no sign of hops.

As with the nose, the taste is classic Euro lager. It's sweet, barely bitter, and designed to be drunk in the sun. If you look for them, there's the slightest whiff of floral hops, and the beer has a slightly sour, long finish that leaves a somewhat sickly note.

Carbonation is kept to a bare minimum, indicating this is meant for rapid consumption, preferably in the sun.

Overall, if I ever find myself in Montenegro looking for something local to drink and my options are limited, I'd choose this. But other than regional loyalty, I can't see a reason other than that for choosing this.

Cheers!

500 ml bottle. ABV is 5%. My first beer from Montenegro. Clear pale golden colour, large and lasting white head, good lacing. Flowery and grassy aroma, quite nice. Maybe some soap in the background, but not enough to ruin the aroma. Light bodied with a substantial hoppy bitterness from start to finish. I would like some more malts to balance the hops, but this beer is still much better than I feared.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a light to medium golden amber with a big, three finger white head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of lager malt, grassy hops, a touch of caramel and citrus. Flavor follows with pilsner malt and grassy hops, faint citrus and fruit flavors with the malt fading out and revealing the grassy hops as the taste progresses. Finishes with mild grassy hops, corn adjunct malt sweetness and vague hints of fruit. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. A bit of a roller coaster of flavor, with a relatively hoppy start with typical Euro lager/pilsner malt, the malt dies out a bit leaving the hops a little stark. However the finish is pretty nice as the typical Euro/American adjunct malt kicks in with a mild sweetness and hints of fruit mediating the hops. Not as innocuous as American adjunct lagers as it is well hopped, but with the same slightly sweet, calm finish that has made this style ubiquitous around the world. Not a bad example. I'd be happy to run into this in its home territory, where there is likely to be a dearth of craft beer. Better than anticipated.

12oz green bottle. Poured out a crystal clear, straw-yellow color with a small, white head of bubbly foam. It left minimal lacing on the glass. It smelled of corn, sweet caramel and some floral notes. Sweet corn taste with a bitter bite. Crisp and sharp.

500ml bottle served in a nonic glass.

Look- Clear golden color. Solid off white head with good retention, moderate lacing. Very active carbonation streams visible.

Smell- Bready malt and honey, rotten apple and light citrus, a bit of skunk and yeast, herbal/grassy and floral notes.

Taste- Lemony citrus and rotten apple, sweet bready malts and honey, floral/grassy hops.

Feel- Light bodied, almost watery. Crisp and lightly sweet. Medium/heavy carbonation on the tongue.

O- Nothing more than a decent European Pale, ok for what it is, but not going to repurchase.

Trebjesa Brewery "Nikšićko Pivo"
500 ml brown glass bottle, "Najbolje upotrijebiti do: 16/07/20 10:23" and sampled on 10/02/20
$2.99 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: A rough pour has brought up around 3 inches of bright white foam and I'll wait until it settles down and top it off. The body is a clear gold, and I can see my fingerprints through the glass. OK, the head dropped fairly quickly, and I've topped it up and this time I've got about a creamy cap that's about 3/4 of an inch tall. The aroma is malty and sweetish. I'm not finding any hops, but it does have a kind of generic beer aroma that includes 'some' hops. I'm not so sure at this point that this isn't an adjunct beer but it kind of smells like it. On to the flavor... well, it's sweet as expected. It's got a nice cereal-like graininess to it and there is a very, very light suggestion of herbal and grassy hops. There's a light bitterness to it, but it definitely leans towards the sweet side. I'm not sure if there are adjuncts in use here, but it seems that there are. Anyway, the maltiness lingers a bit in the finish but there's not really enough there that it builds on the palate, and once it passes the bitterness comes forward a bit. In the mouth it's medium bodied but on the lower end, although not quite medium-light. It's got a soft, moderate carbonation that leaves it gently crisp and then somewhat smooth across the tongue. That brings me back to head retention and lacing. Obviously with a limited carbonation the head doesn't hold up as well as it could, and this is no exception, nor does it leave great lacing. It was OK though; there's a lot of tiny spots here and there and some fuller lace just above the level of the liquid, it just doesn't last. In the end this is a decent enough Euro lager that's free of flaws but just doesn't have enough going on to make it exciting. It's a little out of balance, and lacking in some areas. I won't suggest you avoid it, but neither will I recommend it. There's a time and place for every beer, and when you find yourself there enjoy it.

. 5 L bottle in Durmitor National Park (Montenegro ).
Amber body with a decent sudsy white head.
The aroma is typical for style, as is the flavor which, as is so often the case, would benefit from a better hop load and more bready malts.
Medium body and (overly) high carbonation.

I like Slovenian beers (actually quite similar to Anerican adjuncts) and after Laskos and Unions this was also in the same vein:
Cheap, skunky lager but absolutely nothing wrong with it! Nice, smooth, neutral taste with some skunk hops, that is all. This is all that you need along with a nice grilled BBQ plate in Slovenia.
