Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This Belgian-style dark ale is the culmination of central and western European malts, Noble hops, candy sugar and a traditional Trappist yeast. Notes of dried fruit, cinnamon and vanilla make DNR a very complex experience to be enjoyed in moderation.

Extremely sweet. Odd after taste. Almost no carbonation.

Received this in a trade as an extra. Way too much malt for me. Minimal hop aromas/general flavor. Could have easily confused this for a barley wine in a blind taste test. Extremely unbalanced and boozy for a 10% abv beer.

Poured from the bottle into a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a ruby red/amber with just a hint of off white head that goes away immediately.

Smell: Sweet and malty with some alcohol and fruity notes. The malt has a touch of caramel smell to it.

Taste: Right off the bat I thought this tasted more like a glass of wine than a beer. The alcohol and fruity notes combine with a mild bitterness and remind me of a red. There is some Belgian yeast spice in the mix as well, but the fruity and slightly sweet notes win.

Mouthfeel: The body is just on the thick side of medium with hardly any carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I'm not sure what the style of this should be, but it's not very pale and tastes like wine. Quite weird.

C

750ml into a tulip. Pours a ruddy deep amber, mid tone between a strong dark and pale. Towering off white head with an encouraging pour slow to recede leaving nice trailing lace, looks like a dairy product.

Aroma is quintessential belgian, wonderful complexity, spicy floral upbeat.

Flavor does not share the complexity, bland within a narrow range. Aftertaste is fully phenolic with a hint of zinc, not a strength, ends with a minor rough bitter. While not hot, the alcohol is pronounced. Medium to full bodied mouthfeel.
