Gran Sport is a robust porter marked by its finesse and distinct malt backbone. Aromatic notes of chocolate and roasted coffee compliment the full-bodied mouthfeel derived from a healthy addition of oat flakes. Dark. Roasty. Malty. Splendid.

On tap at Mcnellie's in T-town before the Sonic Youth show. From notes.

Pure black with a quickly fading pure black head that leaves some broken stripes behind. Smells of subtle roasted nuts and malts. Tastes sweet and malty with a nice hop hit in the end. Faint chocolates and notes of black licorice also exist. Medium bodied and well balanced brew from some local favorites.

Darkest opaque brown, minimal head and lacing. Smells of dark roasted malt, taste follows with coffee and chocolate. Medium carbonation, really lovely.

Currently #60 in the Top Oklahoma Beers list.

12 fl oz can ran me $1.99 a single at Total Wine & More, Austin, TX. Pull-tab with a blak and red label.

IBU 43. ABV 6.0%. SRM 54. "Robust porter."

HEAD: Khaki tan in colour. Somewhat creamy. Typical frothiness. Could be fuller, softer, and deeper. Could have more of a gilded tan colour to appear richer and livelier. But it pours a good ~8cm of head height and sits ion my nonic pint for a good 5 minutes before receding (probably takes 8 minutes in all).

BODY: Opaque brown-black. Not a jet or ink black. Appears unfiltered if I had to guess. I don't see any yeast/lees, though.

AROMA: Brown malt. Caramel. Brewers' chocolate. Brown bread. Subdued generic coffee-like roast (probably from carafa).

Lacks the robust coffee aromatics and assertive roasted barley notes I'd expect in a top tier porter. Suggests a semi-sweet porter with generic malty sweetness and scintillae of coffee and chocolate.

TASTE: Heavy on Whoppers-like malted milk ball flavours, generic malt sweetness, and caramel. Not my kind of porter, lacking bold chocolate/coffee flavours and failing to bring much to the table in terms of roastiness. Toffee comes in as it warms. Has a very English taste for an American porter.

TEXTURE: Powdery yet thicker than it ought to be. Unrefreshing. Smooth, wet, a bit creamy. It's soft, but the powdery feel of it just doesn't seem right in a would-be robust porter. Medium-bodied with uncharacteristic give. A biteen chalky.

OVERALL. Not a bad porter by any stretch, but far from a great one. I'd sooner buy Deschutes Black Butte or Founders' Porter. Not sure what the appeal is here. Seems overhopped for a porter as well, with some floral and resinous character coming through.

Can

Appearance: Black glass glows ruby with strong back light and shows clarity. Holds a solid quarter finger of dark tan head that laces.

Aroma: Black Patent malt, toast, mild sweetness. A little nutty.

Taste: Malt driven but not sweet, the malt flavors are deep roasted but not burnt. Flavor is pretty mild overall, clean, mild toffee finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium light body, medium high carbonation, clean almost dry finish.

Overall: Tasty beer. Don't think it has Fuggle hops, which is the reason I don't like most porters, but this doesn't taste "American" either. Easy drinking.

Thanks to the Col. for the can

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 11/22/2017. Pours crystal clear very dark brown color with a 1 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toffee, nuttiness, and toasted dark/brown bread; with light notes of smoke, char, dark fruit, herbal, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toffee, nuttiness, and toasted dark/brown bread; with light notes of smoke, char, dark fruit, herbal, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char and herbal/grassy/spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toffee, nuttiness, toasted dark/brown bread, light smoke/char, herbal, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great hop/roast bitter/sweet balance; and zero cloying/acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/roast bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 6%. Overall this is an excellent American porter. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. Very rich for the ABV, great well rounded porter malt complexity, and solid earthy hop balance that isn't overdone. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Very nice porter! Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Rich dark brown with a nice beige head and great lacing. Smokey, chocolate smell that follows to the taste. Flavors of cinnamon and a hint of coffee. Everything melds very well and is subtle and satisfying.

Toasted black beer with a quick head. Smell is pungent with some almost wine-like tannins like grape. Also some hop dankness, but I might bebiased. The sip is a really crisp, really easy drinkee best gulped down cold. Most amazing thing whout the beer is the creeeamy afterfeel and taste. Samn

As of mid-2017, Coop [unwisely] changed this fantastic product from year-round to fall seasonal and [wisely] from 16 oz 4-packs to 12 oz 6ers. It reappeared on shelves in late November.
