Notes: A straightforward malt body supports the distinctive bouquet of Columbus and Falconers Flight hops that impart citrus, grapefruit and pine notes characteristic of the West Coast style. F5 is a belligerent hop reckoning.

I have tried well over 100 IPA's and most of the popular, highly rated ones from Dogfish, Goose Island, Founders, etc., etc. This little brewery in Oklahoma makes the best one, hands down. It delivers a classic IPA smell and taste that is off the charts. All IPA's are bitter and for a lot of people (including myself) they can be a little to harsh....not this one. You get the hoppy bitterness but it has an amazing smoothness and mouthfeel that adds a level of drinkablity that most IPA's don't have. Pay no attention to the negative reviews on this beer.......if you have a FRESH can there is no way it will disapoint.

It's a real shame what they've done to this beer. Recognized by various publications as the finest IPA made in Oklahoma, F5 has been a go-to for me.

I have no idea why, but along with transitioning from 16 oz to 12 oz cans, the beer has also had the recipe changed. The resulting brew is 85 IBU (vs 100+ previously) and 7.1% ABV. The result is a sort of watered down version of the original. More malt-forward than it was with less aggressive hop smell on the nose.

Still decent, but not the same. It almost seems like this page should be retired and a new page set up for the new recipe. Suggest others note whether the beer they're reviewing is 85IBU/7.1ABV or 100+IBU/6.8%ABV

A - An orange coppery color with a slight haze. An excellent 1 inch head. Excellent retention. Beautiful patterns of white lacing.

S - Floral earthy hops dominate, bright lemon zest, hints of pine.

T - As the nose describes...Huge dry potpourri hops attack. There's an astringency with the flowery spicy hops. Lemon, grapefruit rind, and tropical fruit come out as it warms. The weak malt strives to show it's face but is overcome by the hops.

M - Firm carbonation, medium bodied, finishes crisp and bitter.

Lots going on. This one is all about the hops. The best IPA to come out of OK so far.

Good IPA, bitter grapefruit is the main note in the taste. I'd drink it again.

16oz can poured into an Idle Hands tulip. No date on can, but I am told that this is very fresh.

A - Pours a hazy, medium amber color. Seemingly very low carbonation with only a faint attempt at forming a head with what appears fizzing away quickly.

S - Big piney hop aroma...practically completely dominates the aroma. Lower level grapefruit and tropical mango make an appearance. Malt base is faint and consists of a bready and low caramel aroma.

T - Piney hops dominate. Medium high level crisp hop bitterness comes on and lingers well past the swallow. Grapefruity hops hand around in the background, just making a small impression. Malt is very mild contributing a lightly sweet caramelly flavor.

M - Quite piney/resiny with a strong bitterness that comes on mid-sip and lingers far past the swallow. Body is medium and carbonation is quite light...not still, but lacking vibrancy and managing only a faint tingle on the tongue. Detracts a bit, especially since I feel a healthy carbonation is essential in a good IPA for bringing out all of the hop qualities in full force.

O - Good IPA overall although far from perfect. The very low carbonation can take the blame for any negatives to be found...a lackluster, headless appearance (even with a somewhat aggressive pour), and a somewhat dead mouthfeel hurt the overall score of this beer. Flavors are typical west coast IPA with a super piney flavor throughout - very solid and tasty. Amp up the carbonation a bit and this could be a real winner.

Look: Beautiful orange-amber color. Cloudy, partially-filtered clarity that is just outstanding. Head is a white, medium- density foam that leaves laces on the pint glass I poured it into.
Smell: Despite the moderately high abv, alcohol presence is limited. Nose-stinging citrus hops, basically. See taste.
Taste: Resinous pine notes and grapefruit, pretty much. Pretty straightforward, but simply on point for style. I will say that the
Feel: Nice lingering head smooth out this medium-bodied beer. Despite its bitterness, is extremely "drinkable" for the style.
Overall: easy to put away, hard to put down. +points because it's brewed by a local brewery in my home city.
