The first (at least according to the brewer) sour ale commercially brewed in the great state of Oklahoma, and it's been aged on cherries too. I was excited enough to try this one that I practically busted down Tapwerks' door at 11am on Saturday.

The beer presented with a clouded golden orange body and a fairly small fizzle of white head.

Plenty of lactic sourness with some mild fruit (banana, bubblegum, and lychee, and pineapple) with some light clove and black pepper. The beer finishes with a surprising amount of sweetness for a beer that was presumably partially fermented with Brettanomyces. In fact, the sweetness provides a unique, though rather cloying, sweet/sour dichotomy that I have found in few, if any, beers. Cherries add some nice depth and further add both tart and sweet characteristics.

I would like to see more in the way of the Brett character and less of the pure lactic sourness, but who's complaining? A solid sour beer brewed in Oklahoma?! Just 3 or 4 years ago this would have been a pipedream.

"We fermented this beer with a normal ale yeast and then inoculated it with a wild yeast/bacteria slurry that was cultured in the brewery. It aged for a couple of months before we added 40 lbs of tart cherries and let it age for a few more months."

This pours a slightly amber tinted, quite hazy, shade of golden orange. It has a two-finger head of very frothy, bone white colored, foam. The retention is very good and the lacing is practically in sheets. Awesome.

Definite barnyard kind of funk is coming out of this glass. Light hints of the tart cherries. Very nice hints of tart peach skins. Green apples. Light touch of yeast. Very light trace of floral hop notes and possible hint of citrus hops. A light earthiness.

Tart notes hit the palate first. Loads of peach skins and granny smith apples. Definite touches of tart cherries. Light notes of wet hay. Light traces of biscuity yeast notes. A good dose of earthy hop presence. Mild sweetness of peach flesh and nectarines. Tangerine zest. The finish has a nicely dry touch of tartness come back out, which leaves it quite crisp.

This is medium-bodied, getting close to full. It has a high level of carbonation, but it's filled with a lot of little tiny bubbles, amongst the larger ones, that bring a nice level of creaminess to this beer.

At a relatively moderate 6.00%abv, this is a nice candidate for a session beer. The nicely refreshing tart flavor profile helps solidify this fact. The tartness is the star here, as there is not the over-the-top acidity that can be found in so many sours that are being produced today. I'll be drinking this one as often as I can and then counting down the days until they (hopefully) release it again next year.
