Bottle obtained from Friar Tuck's in Savoy, IL.
No bottled on date or best before.
Poured into a tulip glass.

Beer pours a >2cm head into the glass, dark tan in color, composed of tiny bubbles that create a very soft, pillowy appearance. Head descends leaving lots of lace in its wake, which is also refreshed with swirling before each sip. 0.5cm head remains throughout entire drinking session. Body is an opaque black color with brown highlights. Overall, an exceptional looking beer.

Smelling this beer is "fun," almost like a game: sometimes it smells of rich milk chocolate and bitter roasted malt, other times I pick up pleasant pine and floral hops. This was probably much hoppier when fresh, but still, a very nice "hoppy black ale" indeed.

Taste opens on tip of tongue with malt sweetness and citrus zest. Roasted malt with slight coffee bitterness, and dark chocolate flavors arrives mid-palate. Hops quickly blend in, giving off tastes of pine forest, citrus zest, and a bit of spiciness. I also pick up hints of tobacco. The blend of roasted malt and hop flavors is quite good.

Mouthfeel is creamy from the smoothness of the body, alcohol is detectable only in the nostrils. Beer is medium to medium-light bodied, with a dry finish, slightly sticky from sweetness. Body could be a bit heavier and benefit from this.

Overall, I enjoyed drinking this beer and wish it was more readily available. A very good interpretation of the black ale style.

Really mellow but rich and toasty, which is very surprising especially for a black ipa. So many of them are over-hopped and/or bitter, but not this one. On the other hand, this one is not at all bland or watery either. This guy is super drinkable but also complex. It's in the top three black ipa's I've ever had -- and I've tasted at least a dozen of them.

Black pour with khaki foam. Coffee, sweet banana and clove notes. Coffee bean, chocolate malt and dry hop flavors. Dry medium mouthfeel, dry hop finish. Some astringency but alcohol otherwise masked well.

I like this style. It's not a stout but there are some similarities. A little bit bitter but quite easy to drink, very flavorful. Very nice !

Poured nearly jet black with a two finger mocha colored head atop that settled slowly into a frothy mass, great retention to the head. The big citric, resiny hop aromas really took me back in a good way,I knew the hops were gonna be big but this was great.Again the hops are huge along with some dark roast, and slight woodiness.Flavors are a bit more even, the resiny hops are mixed with a healthy dose of roast and molasses-like sweetness. This is a great beer, best of the style I have had, just a great hop profile.
