Brewed in collaboration with Shelton Brothers. Lots of rye malt and spices inspired by the dark German bread.

Picked this one up at The Publick House Provisions on 11/11/09
A: This beer pours a nice deep dark opaque chocolate brown. A one finger of light brown head sits on top, recedes to a 1/4 cap that retains the length of the beer. Nice sticky lacing left on the glass.
S: Nose is of hefty roasted malts, very distinct pumpernickel flavoring, and hints of coffee.
T: Taste is far more complex than the nose lets on. Taste is of big roasted, semi burnt malts up in the forefront. It's followed with big bitter dark chocolate and pumpernickel flavoring. Finish is coffee and a touch of hops that gives it a bite.
M: Medium body, medium carbonation, thick and creamy body to the beer, goes down very silky with a sticky finish.
D: This is definitely a different beer. The pumpernickel brings a nice interesting twist to the beer. Very tasty, goes down easily. I'm not sure that I could sit with it for a night, however a pint or two are highly enjoyable.

Much more like an Imperial stout.

Poured from a 0.5 L bottle into a room temperature snifter.
A: Pours opaque with a thick khaki head that maintains well and laces beautifully throughout.
S: Some notes of coffee and chocolate take a back seat to hops, fennel and rye, making it spicy in the nose.
T: Some roast up front, with coffee and a little chocolate afterwards, move quickly to a little hop bitterness and dry bready flavors of rye and fennel, but without being overpowering. All of the notes come together and leave a pleasant roast aftertaste.
M: Medium body with decent carbonation, the rye and fennel notes lend a little bit of astrigency to the beer, but it is not unpleasant.
O: A well-balanced and novel approach to the style, the rye and fennel add to the hop bitterness, leaving you with a big Baltic porter that flirts with the Russian Imperial Stout style.

A - Black with some dark brown edges and a dense, three-finger, cappuccino-like head that dissipated extremely slowly. Big bubbles with moderate lacing.
S - Lives up to the name. Bready, roasted malts. A very peaty, earthy aroma is also present. It all works well together, with a heavy pepperiness to it.
T - Rye bread upfront, followed by a moderate liquorice flavor. The fennel really lingers, and although enjoyable, I felt like paired with food it would be better (I tried a few different cheeses, which didn't quite seem to work. Switched to a complementary bread, which really intensified the spices.)
M - Mouthfeel was moderately thick, with a dry, bitter aftertaste.
O - Overall, a really nice beer. However, I would recommend sharing the half litre bottle, as the spices are quite pronounced (although I would say this is the beer's strength, as it is a 'pumpernickel porter' after all.)
