The word Cherny litteraly means ‘black‘ in Czech referring to the color of the rather surprising dark Schwartzbeir with gentle bitterness to appeal your palette. A true gem to be discovered by specialty beer lovers.

Poured from a can into a pokal glass.

A-Deep black; not translucent. A thick, creamy tan head. Excellent retention and nice lacing on the sides of the glass. The bubbly head remains on the surface throughout consumption. Great looking brew!

S-It smells of burnt molassess, licorice, coffee, and sweet malt.

T-Burnt molasses and coffee; hints of licorice; sweet roasted malt goodness! I could smell small traces of hops. Nice dry and bitter aftertaste. Refreshing!

M-Light-medium bodied. A little watery and it is almost disappointing, but the complex taste saves this beer from becoming a below average brew.

Overall-This brew is a good beer that needs to be marketed in more states. I know it would be popular. If you want a nice tasting, lighter black beer, buy this and enjoy. It is well-balanced and sessionable. Cheers!

Pours a very dark brown, crystal clear; slightly off white head, better than average retention with some very nice lacing.

Nose is ashy, with some coffee and weak bakers chocolate, little bite of malty sweetness hides underneath.

The taste is bright malt; with the roast and coffee notes on the finish. This would be a fun blind beer the way the taste comes off...I think at first someone would think it is a pale lager but then on the finish the dark comes out; really neat. Lingering ash and roast on aftertaste.

Light body, incredibly bright feeling on the tongue, nice biting carbonation; minor roast driven bitterness on the finish, noticeably dry.

A beautiful lager, this drinks so light and the dark doesn't show itself till your tongue adjust from the bright bite this beer has; it is perfectly balanced. Excellent beer; very much looking forward to the other couple I have from this brewery.

Pint tap hit at Bohemian Brewery with a fine dinner.
Solid pour, head made it to the table and lasted a minute.
Smell is roasty carmelly sweet.
Taste follows - good little traditional European bock meant to session with good food.
Feel is thankfully thin because the food was very very dense.
Overall - fresh dark beer, tasty.

An exceptional dark stout out of the tap with a great but not to long lingering after taste.

The look is a dark amber to brown. Very minimal off white head. Slightly bitter malty roasted caramel taste. It is a medium to light body beer with a roasted coffee aftertaste. The beer is easy to drink and light.

[Original rating 2016-01-23] Can. Dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel. Taste is the same with a little coffee and chocolate. Not too bad though I’m not a fan of the style.

Canned beer served into snifter.
Apprance - Pours very dark, but is also very translucent .
Smell - Very reserved aroma. Slightly sweet bready notes with only a few hints of chocolate. Slightly sweet.
Taste - Underwhelming. Tastes like a Utah beer for sure. It is clear that they have a skimpy malt bill on this beer to get it only to 4%. Some bready notes with reserved chocolate. Does not taste like a bock beer. Moderate malt sweetness.
Mouthfeel - very thin and moderately carbonated.

An easy drinker for sure, but a let down for a Swarzbier. Can we please repeal the 4% laws already???

this is kind of bad. there are really two ways to go with the 4% abv utah drafts. one is you water it down, at least in how it comes across. the other, like this one, is that you brew a normal recipe for a bock, and only ferment it part way. this seems half cooked to me, super sweet and not at all finished. i bet this could ferment down to like 7% abv at least if it was allowed to carry on. i think thats really unflattering, and something i dont really like at all. deep brown in color, a little amber to it, smell fading head, and a lot of body and sweetness. notes of fig and toffee to it, i do not dislike the malt flavor, and reckon its fairly traditional there, but its unfinished and super sugary, i dont taste lager yeast at all, and it ends up tasting like juiced raisins or something to me, hardly beer at all. my first from these guys, but its fully lackluster. this doesnt seem like a schwarzbier to me at all, the malt never gets that dark. id be interested to try some of their lighter stuff, but this one seems intentionally incomplete on the fermentation, and i find it pretty unsexy as they go. this was kind of filling for what it is, still very sturdy, maybe better in a winter context...

I'm surpised by the "BA Score" and rating "The Bros" keep giving to these Bohemian Brewery beers. I've yet to find one I enjoy, and the Cherny Bock isn't an exception. Like all of the other beers from Bohemian, it's watery and weak. A bock should be bold and full, but this is just...impotent. As I've said on reviews for other Bohemian brews I've tried, this one just isn't worth the time to articulate everything about it. Don't like it. Won't have it again. It's another deterrent for ever visting the Bohemian Brewery and restaurant that's less than 5 miles from my abode.
