Saying that someone has the best beer in Utah is a very backhanded compliment. It is ironic that the most flavorful beers in Utah are lagers as well. These are well crafted beers that have been infused with as much life as seems possible with the 3.2 percent limitations.

The Pilsner was a standout, very flavorful, very clean maltiness, very true to style. The other beers were all lagers as well, my least favorite was the Weiss. Not that it was really a bad beer at all. It was very well made, I just think it would have been great with a ale yeast at a higher temperature.

The other beers would have been better with a bit higher malt bills but then the hops would have needed a boost since there would be no alcohol to help balance the extra sweetness, and these guys are all about the clean crisp flavors of the lagers, and I believe they made the right choices. As far asUtah beers go, you can really do no better.

As for the food. Wow! Very good food. No point in giving all of the details of that, but you won't be sorry if you stop here for the food.

If you are not educated in Utah beer suckage you may not like the beers because you might foolishly believe there is something better at the next place.

If you are uneducated about beer you might not notice that the beers here are still very well made by any standard even if they aren't what you (or I) would normally choose.

This place is fairly deep in the suburbs of SLC, but easy to get to off the freeway. (Just exit 7200 south, go east, and look on the right a few blocks later.) Also should be super easy from the light rail (TRAX) station at 7200 South.

The atmosphere is actually pretty pleasant, at least when it's dead empty, as it was at 9pm on a Sunday night. Another BA called it with describing it as a "ski lodge" type feel. I looked for the hampsters, but happily, they were nowhere in view (or smell.) The bar is cozy and smallish, maybe 10 seats, and has a weird Playboy trivia machine at one end, which judging from ther high scores it displayed, only two people ever play. From the paraphernalia on the walls and the bulletin board in the front entry, it looked pretty likely to be a biker bar, though this wasn't obvious on the night we visited. The place was pretty dark and shadowy, but in a nice pub-like way. I commented to my friend that the bar must have been an exceptionally nasty place for cigarette smoke
before the statewide ban (95.)

The beer, well, eeehhh. It wasn't bad for style (Bavarian, Vienna, Czech Rep., Bohemia), but only one thing stood out: the Cherny Bock was very dark, with strong roasty flavors, and like a lagered porter in style (not really a black bock or schwarzbier, as the lagered style was barely noticable.) Slight metallic aftertaste, but a quite pleasant thing to drink. A 16oz. pint was $3.50, and a 20oz. "lovely" $4. Sadly, the $2 pints on Sunday I'd seen listed somewhere weren't forthcoming, but I wasn't complaining. Our other pint, the Viennese Lager, was weak, with slight fruitiness, zero aroma, and limited body: easy drinking, but little else. Tasters of the other two standards, Bavarian Weiss and Czech Pilsener, were underwhelming to boring. Echo the comments of other reviewers: largering the Weiss, apparently intended as a very light bodied Berliner-style, is just weird, and the results are not good: this was an amazingly thin beer, bordering on BMC. Another speciality brew on was forgettable, so forgettable, in fact, that I've forgotten it, and my notes just say "speciality."

Our service was actually excellent, even though we interrupted the bartender's dinner at the end of a night. She was pleasant and friendly, and suggested the cheap tasters ($0.50 per). I don't know how service is when the place is busy, but it was quite good for us.

The selection, four standards and one speciality, leaves a lot to be desired. The place seems pretty darn big, so it seems they could fit some more brewing equipment and lagering space in it if they wanted to. My guess? They know the suburban audience, and bikers who come in after runs to drink, just don't really care.

As to quality, sure, some will defend it with Utah's stone-age 4.0% ABV (3.2% ABW) restrictions, but especially in these styles, it's not that hard to do some well, as other brewpubs in SLC (Squatters, Desert Edge, and Red Rock, in that order) show.

The minimal food we had, garlic fries, weren't garlicky at all, but they were super tasty, with loads of parsley and some other green herb (mild chives, maybe?), thin and crispy fried, and were an excellent munchie with the beer. Can't speak to other food.

Overall, a pretty uninspired place. I'd go back if I were in the neighborhood, or to complete a citywide, comprehensive brewpubcrawl, but I wouldn't go out of my way, at all.

A great place to go if you're in need of some Bohemian culture to ward off the drab Mormon culture blues. A spacious, yet cozy interior makes for a nice atmosphere. It makes you almost forget you are surrounded by Western sprawl. Large deck for summertime drinking and a big fireplace for wintertime imbibing. Only four beers on tap, all brewed on premises, but they are decent to good. They don't seem to have any rotating seasonals either. Anyway, service was good, and the Czech proprietor even came around to ask us how our meal was. Our meals were fantastic. Great food here, and seemingly very authentic. Try the perogies and bratwurst platter with homemade sauerkraut. Yum. Definitely a cool place to check out if you're in the SLC area. I just wish they had more beers/variety, and I wish they weren't restricted by the state's absurd abv laws.

Log cabin style building is certainly appropriate for such a wonderful skiing destination - Salt Lake City. Hops are plentiful around the bar as decoration and the aroma is noticeable.

Food is simply marvelous. Excellent variety and quality are hard to find. IMO this is why this place has stayed in business unlike the previous 2 or 3 brewpubs that failed in this same building.

The Czech owner is often on premises as well as his spouse. Very friendly atmosphere during the evening hours prior to closing.

4-6 beers are brewed here, so the selection is average.

But unfortunately the good points stop here. As a beer lover, this place disappoints in the area that matters most - the beer. The beers are uninspiring, especially the so-called Weizen. The bar tenders can't seem to consistently tell me what this beer is, a hefeweizen that is lagered? what? why is it so flavorless and watery? Other Utah breweries do just fine with the 3.2% law but this weizen is an exception. The Vienna lager lacks the malt and hoppy character that a vienna lager is supposed to have, and the pilsener is more of an American pils than a Czech pils (light, low flavor profile, etc.). So, for quality, I must give a low score for quality in beer - which is one of the more important criteria for reviewing a brewpub.

Other incidentals are worth mentioning. The service is sometimes terrible, simply terrible. Oddly enough, the owner has hamsters and the bar often smells like cedar shavings from the hamster cage. I couldn't tolerate the smell so I said something and the bartender informed me it was the hamster cage. Hmmm. In a restaurant?
They may have corrected this error since then, but I cannot go back.

They have VERY conservative hours too. Don't be surprised if the door is locked before midnight, even on a Friday or Saturday.

So, for excellent food in Salt Lake City head over to the Bohemian. Just don't bother with the beer.

This is a decent little place in the southern suburbs of Salt Lake City.

The owner of the joint is old school Czech and the place shows it with the authentic european touches in the place. The whole resturant is shaped like an old european A frame ski chalet with a big roaring fire, a big open grill kitchen area and a large bar (separate from the resturant as required by UT law)

Sitting here on a slow saturday afternoon, I got a good chance to reflect over the 5 lager beers presented (even the Weizen was lagered). Though the service was slow it was nice to have a peaceful saturday afternoon with no sports games, no worrisome fretting about the weird woman to my left.. just my beer and a spinach and pastrami salad.

All in all a very good place with mostly well executed beers.
