Not pitch black, but very dark amber with a very good lasting head. Smell of liquorice, malt and hops (think German doppelbock). A full taste of dark fruits (grapes), malt, wood, chocolate and vanilla. In fact, this beer reminds me of Portugal's staple drink: port wine. Not your archetypical stout, though there is some roasted coffee flavour in the finish. Alcohol is well hidden in the taste, but gives a nice warmth after the finish. Full bodied and quite smooth. Very nice and unique beer.

Pours a dark colour, huge head with medium retention that leaves a nice lace. Aroma of chocolate, dark fruits, licorice, cinnamon, overripe fruits. Medium body, creamy palate, carrbonation is OK. Taste of dark fruits, chocolate, pepper, coffee liquor. Excelent.

I don't see a date on the bottle but the cap has the following stamped: "0204110209"
The beer I have is listed at 9% ABV and is marked as a "mild stout" at the bottom part of the label.

Appearance: As soon as I opened the bottle it began to slowly gush out on its own. This seems a bit odd given that it doesn't have much of a head when poured. It has a light cream colored head with a bit of a light khaki in it. Spotty lacing. The body of the beer is a dark brown color and opaque.

Aroma: It has a strong caramel aroma which is more consistent with something like a Doppelbock. It has a sweet sugary date smell too which again is more consistent with something like a Dubbel. It is not a bad aroma it just doesn't smell like a stout. Normally very liberal license can be given to any dark Belgian beer given that specific styles are not listed but this beer explicitly states that it is a "mild stout."

Taste: There is a bit sweet malty caramel flavor here. It has just a touch of raisin bread flavor or even a bit of fruitcake. It's a pretty good tasting beer but it won't scratch an itch for a stout.

Mouthfeel: Quite a bit of carbonation; more than the standard stout. The body is about medium and no bitterness at all. A slightly off-dry finish.

Overall: It's not a bad beer as a whole but it just tends to be very sweet and without a solid direction or intent. It tends to be pretty sweet and that really dominates both the nose and the flavor palate to the point where you just want something more from the beer. It doesn't taste like a stout at all. The upside is that it does have a nice raisin bread or fruitcake flavor but again this is surrounded by this strong malty caramel sweetness. If that is your thing then you might enjoy this but if you are looking for anything in the realm of a stout then you will be disappointed.

Raspiness on the tongue at the bottle's end. But, chocolate solved that.

Bottlecap says best before 23/08/08.

Aroma is sherry laden initially, with vinous notes. The cocoa is still present in full force.

Flavor is raisiny, a touch vinous, with toffee hitting mid palate, along with chocolate, and carrying into the lightly roasty finish. A bit sweet, but no sign of alcohol whatsoever. Aged very gracefully.
