Notes / Commercial Description:
Black Imperial IPA, brewed with 100% Belgian ‘Westkust’ hops. Dark and bitter ale with hoppy flavours. Refermented in the bottle.

Troubadour 'Westkust' is a dark, almost black beer with 9.2% alc V / V with a hoppy aroma, roasted malt, coffee and light notes of chocolate and vanilla. The taste is a balance between the taste of roasted malt and coffee followed by a strong but pleasant bitterness that slowly gets the upper hand and ensures a long hoppy finish.

This Belgian version of a black ipa, this ale shows a dark brown ale with a nice head. Balanced all along the beers shows some citrusy and herbal hops, some cocoa and some yeasty notes

Poured in wine glass, minimal head and no lacing. Ruby brown in the glass little light passes thru. Smells of roasted malt, dark fruit, kinda got a dubbel quad thing going on. Taste is pretty much that, has the dark fruit, raisin, prune with a mild hoppy finish. Good mouthfeel, going to have this with a steak in a few minutes, should work well together.

Big painted 750ml bottle...starts expectations out on the high side. 8.5% vs. the 9.2% stated here. Pours a very dark, slightly murky, brown with a massive head that leaves lots of lace. Nose is a mix of musty, slightly stale-smelling hops, along with a bit of malt which leaves you thinking this is more of a Belgian strong with a dose of hops than an straight-up IPA. Taste is milder than expected. A bit malty with complementary roasted notes...but soft. Hops never kick in like you'd expect and finish only has a bit more bitterness. Honestly, I'd score this higher as a dubbel. Crisp mouthfeel with the high carbonation. Overall, an oddball beer. Not really a black IPA, but not anything you could better categorise either. Nothing really wrong with this beer, but probably wouldn't purchase again since it doesn't quite scratch the itch for anything.

Pours a dark brown colour, with a medium tan head that leaves a good creamy lace when fading. Aroma of chocolates, dried fruits, prunes, milk chocolate. Medium body, lively carbonation. Creamy palate. Taste ofprunes, coffee, chocolate, brandy. Really good.

Dark brown colour; pours with a fairly big head that disappears quickly afterwards.
Hoppy smell with a little bit of roasted coffee.
The taste is exactly like in the description: "Dark and bitter ale with hoppy flavours".
A bitter aftertaste that feels pleasant. The high alcohol content is also present, but not so obvious like in a Triple.
A good black IPA overall.

Troubadour Westkust
Black IPA – 9.2% - 330ml Bottle – Best Before 07.07.2018

Appearance: Dark brown, slow moving carbonation. Big just off white, dense head which shrank fairly quickly, leaving it looking like a glass of coca-cola.

Aroma: Stout like; roasted malts, hops, coffee.

Taste: Cross between a stout and a black IPA. A lot off roasted flavours (stout) but also a lot of new world hops (IPA).
Very bitter.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, prickly carbonation and very dry, bitter finish.

Overall: I really enjoyed the troubadour magma and the stout, but this one, that is somewhere in the middle is not really to my taste. I find it a little too bitter.
