Fat Heads Brewery and Saloon
"Rocketman Red"

LOOK: Pours a reddish amber with perfect clarity. A layer of white foam leaves a nice display of lace on the shaker pint.

SMELL: Malty caramel and pine make up most of the nose.

TASTE: Caramel, sweet toffee and faint toast lead off this pleasantly malty brew. There is a nice hop flavor/presence as well with an earthy, dry pine bitterness. Still, if anything, this is a malt forward brew.

FEEL: Medium bodied and well carbonated. Crisp with a mild hop bite.

OVERALL: This is a pretty good red. Has enough flavor to keep it interesting, and all the flavors are kept in check. Another enjoyable Fat Heads offering.

16oz pour into a clean pint glass for around $4.50.

The beer has a decent appearance, albeit a bit too textbook and therefore a bit void of any personality. The beer is, you guessed it, amber with a touch of caramel around the edges. Here is some slight noticeable carbonation in the way of slowly trickling bubbles. This has decent color and nice lace when the small white film of a head recedes. More head retention, please, but a good start.

The nose is also pretty straightforward. There’s an abundance of caramel malt with a touch of toast reminiscent of biscuit or victory malt. Some sweet breadiness follows with just a touch of earthy and piney hops. But this is neither hoppy nor expressive, instead it’s just boring.

The taste begins to bounce back. To me, this is more of an Irish red than an American because there just aren’t enough hops. The dominant taste is the nice malt sweetness and breadiness. The beer doesn’t get too grainy, but a touch of toast adds to the depth. I wish there were huge citrus hops, but all we get is a simple balance to the sweetness in earthy hops with perhaps just a touch of pine.

The mouthfeel is nice, featuring a pretty clean finish and ample carbonation, which makes the medium to light body move across my tongue. This is not a bad red at all. It’s very drinkable and enjoyable. But this is more like what I expect from a brewing competition, not from a brewery with personality. Let’s get this rocket moving off the launch pad. Right now, while acceptable, it seems like a dud compared to the intergalactic blast it could be.

Pours a hazy amber to reddish color with an off white head. In the aroma, a mellow caramel like roast. In the taste, sweet malt and a small pine hop. A small hop bite, and a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a semi dry caramel like aftertaste. Nice small hop and easy too drink.

Had on tap at the brewery a few hours ago. Poured into a clean, clear pint glass. Notes from the brewery: ROCKETMAN RED ALE 5.5% ABV 30 IBU 16oz Pint $4 Deep ruby red ale takes off with a toasted and caramel malt sweetness then landing softly on a clean hop finish.

A Creamy light brown head over a classic amber translucent body. 3.0

S Minimal amber smell, smooth. 3.0

T Basic red/amber ale taste but smoother than most basic ambers. Just fine but nothing extra special. I guess it is a little bit better than advertised in that it delivers on what is amber ale...but also offers a nice smooth mouthfeel too. 3.5

M As mentioned above, there is a welcome smoothness to the feel. A slight bitterness of amber bitterness as well. 4.0

D Good to great. 4.5
