Same ratng at the brewpub as a cask. I changed to the cask as it is a great cask, with chocolate and balanced smoke, still significant carbonated.
Good smoked enjoyed on-tap at Pizza Plant, Transit. Black body with soapy brown head, served too cold. More drinkable though not more complex as it warmed, yielding more coffee. Pleasant BBQ smoke in nose. Above average mouthfeel, a sipper but drininkable. Drying finish.

Poured out as a nice dark brown color with a thin cream colored head on top. The retention was pretty good on this beer with a minimal lacing. The smell of the beer has a smokey aroma to it, with just some hints of other roasted and chocolate aromas also. The taste of the beer wasn't overly smoked which to me is a good thing. The mouthfeel of the beer is medium bodied with a decent dryness to it. Overall it's not a bad porter, it is also drinkable so that also helps this beer out too. Not bad.

Fatheads UP in Smoke

Pours a dark brown, almost black and oily. Off white head forms and leaves a fair amount of lace. In the aroma, big time smokey, roasted malt essence and just a hint of smoke cured meat. In the flavor, a pronounced smoke flavor similar to german rauchbier. Some chocolate and vanilla are there, roasted malt chimes in, but the smoked malt flavor is predominant. Finishes with a lingering smoke note. An authentic American Rauchbier.

Had on cask at the Cleveland location. The menu notes: A robust porter brewed with malted barley that was smoked over Adler wood by our brewers on site.

This beer is a dark porter, nearly black colored, with a creamy tan head from the cask. The aromas of smoked malt and roasted malt complement each other well. This was smoked by the brewers on site? How is it that they do every beer-related activity so perfectly? Fat Heads is a brewery that you can just rely on, they are so solid.

The taste is rich with roasted malts, a little chocolate, and tons of smoke. Another guy I was with said it tasted like liquid salami, I think that sort of places it correctly but it really is tastier than this description would imply. As it happens I love German rauchbiers so I was ready for exactly this flavor, and the twist that it was a porter made for an enjoyable pint.

Good creamy cask body and mouthfeel. Another hit out of the park by Fat Heads.

Pours jet black with a light tan head. In the aroma, a light smoke and roasted coffee. In the taste, melow smoke and a nice coffee roast note. A smooth and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry hint of smoke in the aftertaste. Nice mellow smoke presence and nice small presence of coffee.

Jet black with a nice tan crown. Tightly knit bubbles. Looks decadent.

Dark roast, mocha, campfire smoke, hint of berry, some char, and burly grain. Lightly sweet.

Big smoky stout flavors. Smoked malt, char-roast, sweet mocha, beechwood, teriyaki sauce, meatiness, black coffee, and earthy hop finish. Gets meatier and meatier as it warms. Great stuff in this glass.

Nice and soft. Carbonation genuflects to a thicker stiller body. Lightly warming, too.

Love it. Smoke done right.

On tap at Fat Heads. 5.7% ABV, 40 IBU. Alder wood smoked on site.

The beer is black, opaque. A clingy tan head blankets the body. When held to light, I can see just a touch of brown around the edges. As I work down the glass, a beautiful lace is left behind.

Smells really nice - chocolate and coffee notes from the roasted malt are complimented by just a touch of smoke from the wood. More of a mild campfire or bacon smoke than the heavier smoke a traditional rauchbier would present, at least in the nose. Also more sweet than salty overall. Just slightly lacking in expression, maybe the cask treatment would help that aspect, but I went with the tap version.

'Up in Smoke' is a beer that any smoked beer fan would love, but what about the rest of us average beer drinkers? Well, I don't hate smoke (just ask anyone who went to college with me) but I'm not a fan when it's overwhelming. Well, this beer is actually quite delicate and very well integrated. The wood they smoked on site seems to have been expertly tuned to the right level to let the smoke, chocolate sweetness, and bitter coffee roast play well together.

In my mouth, this beer is creamy with adaquate carbonation and a medium body. Just a touch too creamy perhaps for a porter, but overall, this is an enjoyable beer that I would try again. And that's saying a lot for this non-smoker! I guess maybe one puff wasn't enough!!

Served on tap at House of 1000 Beers

A - Pitch black in color, nice two finger creamy tan head, huge wall of lacing.
S - Smoked ham and salami, dark roasted grains, coffee beans, some sweet toffee malt.
T - Sweeter malt up front, a little syrupy, good smoke flavor, but not overwhelming at all, burnt toast, baked breads and a mild bacon flavor.
M - Well carbonated, full but doesnt flood your palate.
O - Great aroma, and a well balanced flavor, though kinda disappointed it only packs a 5.7%

12oz pour at the taphouse.

This is one of the better smoked stouts I have had. Dark with a decent off white head. Slight smokey char on the nose. Chocolate, slight coffee and a bit of smoke. This works well without being overbearing. A great change of pace beer. Will definately have again.
