Snifter

Look - Brown with red tint or red with brown tint. No head with weak pour. No lacing. Relatively see through. Stone head if there was head.

Smell - Sweet. Cherry. Ginger. Malt.

Taste - Follows nose well. Plus Bubblegum. Plus Apple. Plus cinnamon. Belgian.

Feel - Medium. I can't believe there is so much alcohol. Dries up.

Overall - This is the lighter version of my namesake Mad Elf. I couldn't get it in December, so Christmas in July! I like it.

Enjoyed this on tap at Fat’s head.

A: Pours a dark amber-brown color with a thin 1-finger white head that quickly dissipates into a wispy lace.

S: Sweet caramel aroma with hints of spicy yeast.

T: Similar to the smell this beer is sweet with lots of caramel flavors. Hints of dark fruits and candy sugar in the background.

M: Medium body and minimal carbonation.

O: Super strong Belgian ale – but easily drinkable and very enjoyable.

Served on tap into a snifter. The eighth beer of my 2014 twelve beers of Christmas.

A- Poured a dark reddish brown with off-white soapy head that left some light lace.

S- Lots of clove, Belgian yeast, dark fruit, and red apple notes.

T- Lots of clove, Belgian yeast, and bubblegum notes. Pretty big red apple notes, dark fruits, spicy yeast notes, and finishes with a mild bitterness.

M- Medium to fuller bodied, very dry, smooth, and lower carbonation. The alcohol is very well hidden for 10% ABV, it wasn't really noticeable at all.

O- Dark Belgians are usually not a favorite of mine, but this one is really good. Often I find this style to be a little too sweet for me. This beer has lots of rich, sweet, fruity flavors balanced out by spicy yeast notes and hop bitterness.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/21/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear dark ruby red/light brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, apricot, apple, anise, pepper, clove, light banana/bubblegum, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, anise, and dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of huge raisin, plum, fig, date, cherry, apricot, apple, anise, pepper, clove, light banana/bubblegum, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruit, cherry, apricot, apple, anise, pepper, clove, light banana/bubblegum, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, anise, and dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitter/spiciness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, lightly sticky/chalky, and slightly slick/syrupy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is fairly well hidden; a small pleasant warmth lingers after the finish, with no booziness. Overall this is an outstanding Belgian strong dark ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, anise, and dark/bready malt sweetness; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Extremely rich, complex, and well balanced between yeast/malt flavors. Superb style execution all around. A highly enjoyable offering.
