This knight rides alone with a lighter body than traditional black beers, lifted to it’s mount with a great show of hop bitterness. Lighter body than one would expect but deep in flavor. Notes of coffee and chocolate swirl from the glass while the flavors drift to sweet, dark malt. Balanced, earthy tones ride throughout this well balanced brew.

$ 4.75/500 mL draft glass at Fat Heads in Cleveland
Aroma of roasted malt
Head small (2 cm), light brown, creamy, rapidly diminishing to 1 mm layer
Lacing good – irregular rings with small bubbles
Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor begins slightly sweet and roasted, ends with slight bitterness; no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate medium, watery, very lively carbonation.

This is an excellent schwarzbier – its aroma, appearance, flavor, and palate are all very well executed. The only negative point is that it seems slightly over carbonated – not fizzy, but pretty close.

On tap at brewery:
A nice dark brown trying to disguise itself as black. It’s too is a light tan than spits a few spider-webbed lines onto the glass wall. A medium thick collar aids in this.

Nose is cocolately dark malt that has a little char. A very light floral aspect is involved, but it’s not well defined.

Taste starts thin and light. The feel boldness with a fairly heavy does of cigar-smoke char. This grows more intense near the end, and leaves a very slightly numbness on the palate despite a fairly smooth, near creamy feel in between.

Taste is mostly driven by the dark malts. A bit of a medium-dark toast opening gets more burnt toast aspects, then some burnt coffee notes, and finally that lingering cigar smoke note.

Definitely a bolder schwarzbier that many I’ve had. Damn near a porter, save for a seeming lack of hop bitterness.

This is one of my favorite brews to have when I go to Fat Heads. Because the restaurant is really far from home, I usually cannot drink anything too big, and this one is very satisfying even though it won't get you wasted (unless you have several).

It's pretty and dark with decent head. The aroma is right where it should be plus a little extra malty roasty smell. The taste similarly is well balanced yet very interesting. It goes down quite easily, and it would be nice to drink a couple liters of it some time, but since I live 41 miles away (and no longer work in the area), I really need to limit my intake when I go there.

Highly recommended.

4 Oz pour on tap.

A: Light brown black body with a light off white head.

S: light grains malts a little hoppy.

T: tastes a lot like a mild but even more watery and with a floral Hop bite on the end.

M: thin light

O: I was not too impressed with this beer. I would drink an English Mild over this any day.

From tap at Fat Head's Saloon South Side Pittsburgh. Unfortunately ate their buffalo sauce cauliflower (which are excellent) which killed my taste buds. From what I can tell, this is a smooth, drinkable offering!
