From tap at Fat Head's Saloon South Side Pittsburgh. Unfortunately ate their buffalo sauce cauliflower (which are excellent) which killed my taste buds. From what I can tell, this is a smooth, drinkable offering!

On tap at the PDX brewpub

A: Dark brown/black with a tan one finger head that lingered.

S: Roasty malts, chocolate and cafe au lait.

T: Sweet, with dark chocolate, roasty malts and a nice coffee back.

M: Medium with medium carbonation.

O: A tasty schwartzbier. Score another for Fathead's.

Black. Little head retention (almost none). Very malty, almost reminds me more of a Stout than a Schwarzbier. Enjoyed it. This may be my favorite Fat Head's offering I've tried yet.

Gold medal winner I believe . . . Fat Heads seems to have more medals than Michael Phelps and the USA basketball teams combined. Anyway, Fat Heads is flying high on the success of their hoppy stuff all the while brewing some really solid lagers. Any brewery that can diversify that much and still produce top notch ales and lagers should be noticed.

$ 4.75/500 mL draft glass at Fat Heads in Cleveland
Aroma of roasted malt
Head small (2 cm), light brown, creamy, rapidly diminishing to 1 mm layer
Lacing good – irregular rings with small bubbles
Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor begins slightly sweet and roasted, ends with slight bitterness; no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate medium, watery, very lively carbonation.

This is an excellent schwarzbier – its aroma, appearance, flavor, and palate are all very well executed. The only negative point is that it seems slightly over carbonated – not fizzy, but pretty close.

Pours a dark brown color with an off white head and some lace. Aroma of smokey malts and more so chocolatey. Semi sweet chocolates are also present in the taste. Mild but present herbal bitterness checks in to provide ample balance. Medium bodied, full and carbonated lager. Overall, a decent black lager with some roast, coffee and chocolate hints. Better than many imports.
