Of course as stated previously, this is a German Bierhall recreated in Pittsburgh. My wife and I had a great time last night on our anniversary visiting this place for the first time.

I liked how the seating worked getting placed at the long tables with strangers to get to know and drink with. We were getting there just as the band was plugging in, so we got to join in for a couple 1/2 liters before heading down to 18th and East Carson (Fathead's). Ein Prost and some Hofbrauhaus tune were the first two songs, and it was entertaining but oh so knock off. I did enjoy the traditional attires most of the wait staff were adorning, especially on the ladies.

Service was great biers were brought out promptly and we did try the sampler to start the night out. I guess selection was okay light lager, lager, dunkel, hefeweizen, and German style pils.

However, quality of the brews seemed off the mark just a bit cookie cutter and one dimensional I'm going to have to snag some fresh examples of these brews from Germany to compare but I was disappointed when trying the sampler. I did settle into a 1/2 liter of the hefeweizen the best of the bunch and it happens to be the best seller so far. I also had a liter of the dunkel, but I wasn't so impressed with this offering especially compared to Penn Dark.

Food was not embraced on this visit, but we'll be back to try the eclectic German/American menu soon enough.

Value was good the sampler was 5 bucks, a 1/2 liter was four something and a liter was seven something.

Overall I wish Penn brewery was still brewing at their location, atmosphere there is more authentic overall based on the fact that the beer kicks ass and the place was built by locals back in the 80s. Enjoyable a must for every beer lover in the Burgh, but it also seemed like a tourist trap.

When you can't get to Munich and want to feel like you are, visit the Hofbrauhaus in Pittsburgh. My family visited last weekend and we were all very pleased with the beer, food and service. The beer is brewed
onsite and licensed by the original Haus in Munich. I had the Marzen and Hefewiezen. Both were very fresh and tasty. Most of us had the bratwurst platte with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. The sauerkraut was the best I have ever had. One of our party had the schnitzel, which he really enjoyed. The atmosphere is terrific with the look of a Bavarian beer hall and German music playing. Although too cold to be outside, this place has a veranda and an outdoor beer garden that overlooks the river. A real gem!

Been many times and don't think I've had a bad night here. If you go on Thur-Sat night its like a madhouse, but it's all first come first serve in the beer hall area and their bar does a pretty good job getting everyone drinks. I like that they have a regular dining area always open in case you aren't looking for a dance on the tables type night. The selection is limited to the 3-5 beers they have on tap at the moment, but most are pretty good!

This place is great. Everyone is dressed in classic German attire and there is almost always a band on stage playing folk music. It is encouraged to stand on the tables and dance. The biergarten itself makes this place amazing. It is a huge outdoor area with picnic tables along the river front. All the food I have had has been really good as well. The only downfall is that sometimes the servers seem a little too busy to help you and that they don't offer a wide variety of brews.

Never been to germany but German bear Garten is what they are going for. Loud, big portions and passable German beer.

Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh is hands down, my favorite place in the city to go late on a Friday or Saturday night, get up on those benches and clang those steins together and sing along.
Their hefeweizen is my favorite and pairs great with any of their authentic menu of tasty German gems. When it is nice out, get down to the beer garden and sit along the river and toast the great view and great atmosphere with a large glass of that hefeweizen. The waitstaff is great and make the overall experience a good one, worth braving the South Side traffic.
Did I mention they have great hefeweizen?
