scored an affordable bottle on closeout, i think i can make out 2012 from the label, but not sure how its dated and not sure its fully legible, but thats my guess. in any case its old, but i figured this would hold up well and it surely did. cork comes out with a resounding pop, a nice auburn to light brown color here, a high bug bubble tan head on top with great retention, and some flaky sediment when i get towards the bottom but its not too tough to pour a pretty clear one. the aroma is raisin, slight oxidation, maple, unlit cigar, and amaretto, very complex but also very traditionally belgian, equal parts yeast and rich specialty malts. the flavor is similar, definitely a wet tobacco, or pipe tobacco thing to this, a light kiss of smoke maybe, dried fruit like raisins and figs, trace baking cocoa and cardboard here, also less sweetness than it smells like it should have, the age and the vital yeast has really dried this out well beyond the normal range for the style, and i quite like it. the texture is the best part though, creamy and fizzy and alive and just really well conditioned over time, its soft and drinkable, delicate for what it is, and really makes this beer for me. all who shared the bottle really dug this. i wish their stuff came around a little more, i am surprised to see how few of them i have had over the years. this was awesome!

Did I just pour a Budweiser? Clear golden coloring, light head. Had higher expectation as I love Belgian beers, but this one just let me down a bit. Better then the Heineken on tap here at Schiphol Airport, but wouldn't buy in a store again.

Okay so I'm not a fan of Belgian beers but usually from dubbel upwards they start becoming interesting. This one I liked quite a bit, for being quite remarkably hoppy along with a bit caramel sweetness in the taste. The flavor is quite remarkable, I haven't had this kind of hops before. I would have liked to have just a bit more of a body to it, because regardless the 6.8%, it is quite watery in the end. Despite all of that, it is quite good, a nice entry to the world of Belgian beers.

Good but not great, in my opinion. Had it on tap, at a brown cafe in Vaals, NL, just a few km from the Belgian border.
Dark color, low density head. Bouquet is fruity, slightly metallic. Taste malty and fruity (a bit like prunes?). Much more impressed by Corsendonk and Tripel Karmeliet at the same cafe on a different day.

Pours a murky copper color with a medium top off beige head that disolves in a slow pace. Aroma is off dark matured and dried fruits , caramel, cinnamon and burned sugar. The taste is medium sweet and medium bitter . It is fruity in the starts and finish off with a slight spicy bitterness. A little weak in the finish and aftertaste. It is medium carbonated with a medium body and a creamy mouthfeel. All in all is a good and easy drinking dubbel, but it gets a little weak in all fronts to be a outstanding dubbel.

When I opened the bottle is fizzed up everywhere and it was lucky I did it by the sink and now by my laptop, so watch out!

Good head level and reddish brown colour.

Aroma of currants, dates and maybe banana skin...

Not really a huge fan of doubles/dubbels...not really a fan of this either. Neither the refreshingness of a lager or depth of flavour of a tripel, the hoppiness of an IPA or the smoothness of a porter.

Flavour is kind of bananaskinny and malty. It's ok though I do not really like it..!

Unknown vintage (old?); drank 11/25/14 @ the Yarchives.

Poured from the bottle into a glass.

Purple hue.

Tan head; minimal lace.

Black pepper & fresh bread nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Spicy black pepper, mild citrus & bread-y yeast flavors up front; cinnamon & caramel notes emerge as this warms. A black pepper bite settles on the lips over the course of the quaff. Not my favorite style/flavors, but complex & interesting enough to have again.

From the tap, it pours a coppery amber with a moderate head. The scent is relatively light with a touch of sweet malt. The taste is full of moderately sweet malt flavor, with a carbonation bite. Enjoyable.

Appearance: Copper color; great deal of particulate matter floating around; a khaki head that retains well, leaving a thin layer after ten minutes or so; some light lacing.

Aroma: creamy, sweet, almost like vanilla wafers, and maybe banana pudding. As the beer warms, I notice a pleasant fig note in the aroma.

Flavor: The flavor of this beer is the same as the aroma, yet it also introduces something new: a sweet & sour, tangy aspect, especially at the end of the sip. Some prune note in addition to the fig note. Slight bitterness in the middle of the taste.

Mouthfeel/finish: medium, lightly carbonated; semi-dry, crisp, pleasant.

Look - 3 | Orange brown colour, Lots of head with long retention

Smell - 4 | light nose with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate, and faint citrus

Taste - 3| chocolate, clove, nutmeg, lemon zest, and orange. The citrus fruit turns into citrus pith and then subsides slightly during the finnish. The finish lasts a good length.

Feel - 4.5 | creamy with light carbonation

Overall - 3.25

I enjoyed the complexity on the nose and the palette, however I did not find the palette very pleasant. Specifically the bitter taste of pith lowered my score significantly. I found it was too strong and overpowered the rest of the flavours.

Drank in Café Heuved, Poured to a Affligem glass.

A: The body is cristalline brown to copper with a very small head that presents some retention and some good lacing.
S: The aroma is mostly yeasty with a yeast that I wasn't expecting. The malt almost goes undiscovered.
T: The taste is a bit like the aroma, being more yeasty than sweet/malty but it's totally not expected. It's strange to say the least.
M: Even with low carbonation, this beer has medium body and a bit of bitterness in the end, but nothing too relevant.
O: Was expecting a lot better for a dubbel, not quite the results wanted here but still acceptable.

Gushing bottle, which is very bad, considering its 0.33l capacity. Hell sticky.
Remnants poured into tulip.
Hazy copper/brown beer with 1-finger beige head, low retention.
Standard dubbel nose and taste, not inspiring.
Damn it all down.

Deep copper brown color, I'm reviewing from the finishing touches of a 750 that my wife started so I have a bounty of sediment right now, looks like it was pretty clear to start with though. Dark and dried fruits are standing out in the aroma along with bread crust and some chocolate notes. Balanced sweetness in the taste, some caramel with toasted malt and more dark fruits, specifically prunes in the taste. Medium bodied with medium-high carbonation. Alcohol is restrained and the finish is sweet.

fine shaving cream beige foam with a brilliant ruby body. A beauty in the glass
the nose is booze and caramel, a bit one dimensional, quite clean for a Belgium
caramel, moderately sweet, balanced by a little roast, little bitterness
light and smooth evervescence on the palate

out of a bottle in outdoor cafe in Amsterdamn
pours a nice reddish golden brown (copper) with a fluffy light tan almost white head that dissipates leaving a large cratered lace in the glass
it's aroma is wonderful kind of sweet with a lot of fruits, nuts, and grains.
Taste is supurb with more of the characters of its aroma coming through. It has a full mouth with a bit of sweetness. Overall a great beer very good for its style. Wonderful for an afternoon in the sun with a light snack

Nice inviting brown caramel colour with a small layer of foam. At the suggested serving temperature it tasted too watery for me, but flavours slowly come out when this beer warms up to room temperature. A decent dubbel, but the malt and caramel can be a bit too dominating. The mouth feel was also a bit lacking.

Old scratch notes I found from Feb 2010. 750ml bottle consumed at the Abbey bar.

Clowdy brown color with a tanned head. Aroma is huge with pear fruitiness and malty sweet brown sugar/apple. Taste is malty sweet but also seemingly overly ripe in fruit. Aftertaste brings more fruity flavoring. Little to no hop bitterness. Drinkable. Light feel with moderate carbonation.

300 ml bottle purchased in Greece and enjoyed in Delphi.

Poured with a huge foamy head over a small brown body. Several pours needed to empty the bottle.

Alcohol is not as well hidden as expected but the alcohol esters do blend nicely with the other flavors. Moderate complexity, including dark dried fruits, soft ripe fruits and pepper.

330ml Bottle in Rembrandt Bar, Amsterdam (€4.00):
This one was a surprisingly good for a beer that was so easy to find in the Netherlands, a really nice Abbey style beer that was very well balanced with plenty of sweetness coming through from the offset but thankfully never really overpowered. The beer was an easy one to drink and is one that I wouldn't mind picking up again in future.

330ml bottle. Augustijn Chalice glass. Brownish amber color headed by beige froth & close but quickly diminish crown. Toasted, prune, plum marmalade, brown sugar & herbal aromas. Sweet, crystal & caramel malty upfront. Medium to full body. Moderate to high carbonation. Silky palate. ABV is felt as a sugary & kind heat. Slight wood, spiced, anise & cumin hues. Sweet & quite sparkling finish. Long fruity aftertaste. Correct beer.

From a bottle into a chalice, at about cellar temperature.

It's head is kind of non-existent, with even an aggressive pour making just a tiny amount of beige fizz which settles to a ring quickly. However, it's got a pretty copper-like reddish brown body in which I can view carbonation bubbles and a lot of nice sediment, which becomes a really thick CLOUD of sediment once I pour out the last of the beer.

To me it smells like caramel, cherries, maple, and ripe apples and bananas.

It also tastes of tart green apples and ripe bananas to an extent. The finish is bready with a bit of dry hoppiness.

The carbonation is expectedly high, and the body feels kinda medium.

Not a mind-blowing Belgian ale, but nevertheless a really solid one. I'm definitely glad I got to try it.
