750ml bottle poured into a chalice.
The beer has a bright yellow/gold see through body with a rush of bubbles and a sudsy white head.
Very fruity with banana, pear, and apple. It’s also got some pepper, earth, and bubblegum.
All the fruit and spice from the nose is here in it, but the spice seems a little more heavy-handed on the palate. The bubblegum was first noticed on the tongue before picking it up in the nose. It’s got a lively level of carbonation, medium mouth feel, and fairly dry.
I was totally surprised by this! It’s hard to go into a beer without any sort of expectation in todays world of ratings. I wasn’t blown away, but I loved the hell out of this thing. It’s a straight up no frills tripel but is put together so well. After Westmalle most tripels meld together for me. This might go the lead of that tight knit pack.

750 ml bottle into signature chalice, bottled on 6/4/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear bright golden color with a 1-2 finger dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lemon, apricot, pear, apple, light banana, pepper, clove, honey, candi sugar, bread, herbal, floral, grass, light bubblegum, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon, apricot, pear, apple, light banana, pepper, clove, honey, candi sugar, bread, herbal, floral, grass, light bubblegum, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spiciness/hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, apricot, pear, apple, light banana, pepper, clove, honey, candi sugar, bread, floral, grass, light bubblegum, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish fora good bit. Fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; with a crisp malt/yeast/hop balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome tripel style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Appearance: A golden pour with a huge and lively white head.
Smell: A light floral nose with very subtle but nice fuity hints.
Taste: A very well bodied beer. Bready notes and heavy texture. Grainy and underlying tastes of raw-sugars and honey. A dry and warm alcohol finish.
Mouthfeel: Smooth, lively and a very full bodied beer.
Drinkability: A nice beer, very decent but not my favorite tripel. I only sampled 1 so maybe a few more would give me a better idea of how i feel.

Appearance This is lighter than the Dubbel, but thicker. The yellowish-orange cloud of a body is impenetratable to light. The long, thick head goes down slowly and laces the glass.
Smell The malt aroma is there, but the light fruit dominates. There is pear and lemon zest, plus a little spice of clover and coriander.
Taste The spice comes out much more in the flavor. The coriander and pepper take over initially, but the malt and yeast flavors catch up. Theres sweetness at the end that tastes like ripe peach.
Mouthfeel The modest carbonation feels a bit light for this medium-bodied Tripel.
Drinkability This one was OK, but it lacked the sense of balance and smoothness that Ive come to enjoy in the style.

Look - (2.5/5) pours a nice light gold color. Clarity is very good, but as I got with the blonde, there were some really gross chunks of trub floating around like a snow globe. The head was also a touch disappointing. It faded to a minimal film with almost no lacing.
Smell - (3.5/5) the smell has a very similar to the blonde, which is malty pitted fruits (peaches/dried apricots). It was interesting in a tripel, but a bit too sweet and not tart enough. Little hop aroma.
Taste - (3.5/5) the flavour is much like the aroma, a bit of a one-note pony with the pitted fruit flavor. There wasn't a lot of balance and it was a bit too sweet without a lot of the spice of tart or floral notes I expected for balance.
Feel - (4/5) The body is on the lighter side of medium, with a medium-high carbonation. This definitely gave it a nice feel and one that worked will with the flavors. The finish just wasn't dry enough.
Drink - (3.5/5) I though this one tasted a lot like their blonde and certainly didn't make me think 'tripel.' It was also a bit too malty for my liking and didn't really have a lot of complexity.

Affligem Tripel, at 9% abv.
Look: Deep golden colour, with 1 finger white creamy head and good carbonation.
Smell: Lots of fruity notes, banana, citrus, a lot of sweetness from the roasted malts, caramel, vanilla. Really good stuff.
Taste and Feel: Spicy, fruity taste, lots of bitterness and sweetness with taste of caramel and smooth, creamy feel with lots of carbonation.
Overall, an excellent Tripel. It really is amazing. Complex and deep fruity aromas, caramel flavour. Never felt like a 9% abv. It's like a dessert really. Brilliant stuff

A: Hazy golden color tinted with orange. Light foamy white head.
S: Alcohol prominent with an odd (unfamiliar) earthy spice smell
T: Again, prominent alcohol taste was foremost followed by a hop bitterness and a spicy aftertaste that wasn't very enjoyable, but wasn't enough to ruin the experience.
M: Medium bodied with fine but abundant carbonation.
D: Slightly ahead of "good" but I had a hard time with that unfamiliar taste that started at the nose and lingered through the finish. It affected the smoothness of the finish and just sort of hung there.
This is a decent Tripel but wouldn't be the first one I grabbed for given a choice of several. I'm curious to try some of the other products in the Affliigem line to see if that peculiar taste is present.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #32 (Sep 2009):
Tripels are tricky. Some breweries think just high alcohol and being blond-ish qualifies the beer to be one. There is a hell of a lot more finesse to the style.
Faint haze on the pale straw color; head retention is right where it should be: sturdy and sticky. The nose is like taking a stroll through a field of lilac, pepper plants and an apricot orchard. Not sure how deep crispness in a beer can go, but this one is going real deep. Spicy, sweet smack across the face wakes the palate up on the first sip with a big HELLO! Sugar cookie dough maltiness meets green peppercorn and wildflowers, with some ripe orchard fruit in tow. Chalky yeast in the drying finish.
A Tripel with a mission: to stay on style and be within the front of the pack. Mission ac- complished-- equal to the Trappist Tripels for sure.

It began gushing out of the bottle moments after I opened it. The beer poured into a pint glass with a thick white head atop a golden body. It's a really nice looking beer. The mouthfeel was nice and creamy with light carbonation, and the smell had a nice musky funk to it. I enjoyed it quite a bit.. more than I expected to really.

Presentation: 750 ml brown bottle with a “Best Before” freshness date on the label, history and how the beer should be poured is provided on the label also.
Appearance: Hazed sun golden colour, the head is a bit short but the lace sticks to the glass just fine.
Smell: Fruity, rustic and yeasty aroma. Smells of ripe apples and pears, earthy from the husky grain and powdery yeast.
Taste: Insanely crisp with a moderate body on a dry palate. Big spiciness, lots of clove though it suggests an off kilter allspice blend from the phenols and alcohol. Maltiness fringes quick to a husky flavour, lots of pale grain husky flavours. Fruity esters are present yet stay in a mild state of mealy apples and ripe pears. Medicinal phenols hold strong, mild honey like flavour is the only sign of sweetness. Finishes surprisingly clean and dry with alcohol in the wind and a mild chalky yeast.
Notes: Not too shabby for a triple, I have had both fresh and aged sample of this brew and have to say that it is more than a decent pick for the style and is unquestionably worth a try.

large bottle, caged and corked, no freshness dating to be found. Pours dull light yellow, cloudy and supporting a white head, that started fluffy and pillowy and then turns to 1/4 inch and regal with fine retentive powers. Tons o' lacing. Nose is bursting with peppery phenolic notes and cloves. Nice soft mouthfeel. Bold Belgian flavorings of yeasy nuttyness, cloves, and pepper. Ths is a full flavor, bold and enjoyable tripel. Amazing how a glass or two can lift the spirits and improve the quality of whatever food you want to pair it with. Readily available tripel, well worth a try.

750ml corked bottle. Cork shot out pretty fast with a nice pop.
Poured a cloudy golden orange, head quickly settled down to a pinky's width and stuck around for awhile. Great lacing on this, smells of sweet oranges and spice with an added taste of pepper and candy. Slight tingling on the tongue, smooth down the back. This tripel was a great find and one I'll be picking up again and again. If you like La Fin you'll love this.

Number two from my Christmas Affligem pack.
Poured into the branded chalice. Golden, slightly murky, with a little bit of sediment that snuck in during the pour. Oh well... Nice, foamy white head, fairly thick, dissolves into a thin sheet. Good lacing.
Nose is slightly fruity (perhaps apple or pear), with a bit of yeast and a slight kick of alcohol in the back.
I'm picky about my Tripels - I appreciate the high alcohol content, but I often find it can take over the brew. This one did quite well for me. Started off with the fruit flavours found in the nose, then a quick alcohol bite followed by a long, surprisingly dry finish. The alcohol wasn't nearly as present as I thought it would be, which was greatly appreciated.
Mouthfeel is a bit sharp, almost too well carbonated. Stings a bit on the tongue, but I'll manage.
A very tasty, drinkable tripel. I found the alcohol was muted fairly well and didn't affect the overall experience. Well done.

33cl bottle. Hazy orange pour with a tall but short-lived white head. Smells of Belgian yeast, honey, caramel, elderflowers and that oxidation smell common to most Belgian ales. The taste follows the same notes, bitter-sweet and quite enjoyable.
