I don't get it. Most Whole Foods have a pretty decent selection of craft beer and imports (the Coddingtown store up by Santa Rosa has an amazing selection), and as this store has now been around for a while, you'd think they'd follow suit. Guess again. Calling the beer selection here mediocre would probably be generous, in comparison to most Whole food stores I've been (frankly, the selection is scarcely superior to the so-so selection down the street at Shopper's Corner). Still, the selection here is a bit better than the what you'll find at Shopper's or Trader Joe's, and I gather that's what WF's figures they're competing against. The store itself is on the small side, and of course there was no one around to help out with the beer selection, should one need any help. Shrug. Could be worse I suppose, but for Santa Cruz and WF's generally, this is a pretty big disappointment.
Definitely worth a visit if you are in Santa Cruz. The selection was pretty good and even had a few more interesting and harder to find beers such as LA Red Poppy, Aroma Coma and some of the recent Almanac releases. There was also a great selection of local area beers and a good selection from across the country.
The local Whole Foods is usually a no brainer visit when I am on the road. I go for the food, fresh, varied and tasty and for the beers from near and far. No disappointments here. I found all the great food I was looking for to give me nourishment during my hotel stay and ample beers of interest. Expect to find the large brand usuals as well as a nice selection of the regional forces, as well as more then a handful of the Santa Cruz locals. Just a few minutes from the main part of town, as best as I could tell, and well worth a visit if in the area or passing through.
Pretty decent selection for a Whole Foods with way more singles than any WF I have ever experienced (and i've been to all WF in the district). Very helpful employees and there is a whole aisle pretty much dedicated to beer. My only gripe is that at all other WF i've been to you can take a single out of a 6 or 4 pack and pay for it individually and even if it didnt ring up they had a "seasonal" single beer sku. It seems like that either doesn't happen here or there has been a policy change at WF in general.
The first of two Whole Foods opening in Santa Cruz. Excellent beer selection for the area. They have English Ales, SN, Santa Cruz Ale Works, SC Mountain, Stone-excellent selection including Old Guardian and Vertical Epic 2008, etc. Numerous imports including Samuel Smith and a handful of German and Belgian beers. Great service, prices are$1.99 for a single, but their bombers look reasonable as do their 6 packs. Having read about the Whole Foods in Campbell picking up some killer beers including Abyss I am hopeful that this location will be able to have a few beers not available at Bevmo etc.
An excellent new beer destination in Santa Cruz. Tons of bottles from all kinds of obscure little local breweries like Carmel, English Ales, El Toro, etc. I haven't seen beers from lots of these breweries anywhere else. Decent selection of Stone and Deschutes, a few Belgians, but the highlight is definitely the dozens of small breweries that barely distribute outside their own walls. Primarily singles (!!!) here with a good amount of 6 packs as well. Almost all the 12 ounce singles are $1.99, which is a very good price around here. I'll be harvesting new brews from this place for months to come. Much better than the WF in Los Gatos.
