Black Raven 2016 Festivus. Holiday Pale Ale Beer. 7.3% alc by vol. Brilliant coppery red in my pint glass. Aroma of candied orange peel. Flavor is stronger, with tartness (cranberries) and bold spice flavors. I taste clove more than galangal or ginger. Bitterness tastes like orange pith more so than hops.

The flavors in this beer are rather overpowering as a stand alone drinking beer. But as an accompaniment to food --- even just cheese and crackers or bread and olive oil -- it's quite an enjoyable quaff.

Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a medium bronze amber with a one finger white head that dissipates to a thick film and lots of lacing. Aroma of light overripe stone fruit, bready malt, citrus and light cranberry. Flavor is earthy mixed light fruit, bready malt, root spices, cranberry tartness and bitterness, which melds with the hops nicely; light citrus hops. An unusually spiced holiday ale, although the galangal root gives the light earthyness of nutmeg and cinnamon (although those spices may be present too). Both spicing and cranberry are at a nice, mellow level. An offbeat, but tasty winter spice ale. I had this on tap last year, but lost my review notes. Glad to find it this year in a bottle. I'll have this again next year. Black Raven does a great job with the classics and made this off beat ale interesting too.

22oz into a tulip. Pours a hazy amber w/ a thin off-white head.

Aroma is fruity, hoppy, spicy. Like a subdued Celebration.

Taste follows nose. Nice clean balanced between caramel malt, floral hops, and spice. Hints of cinnamon and nutmeg, maybe clove too.

Mouthfeel is balanced, medium bodied. Finishes clean.

Overall a nice, drinkable, balanced winter warmer.

Citrusy with a sweet mellowness and bitter edge. The spices are all fairly subtle and it whole melange mixes well. Tangy but thick and substantial. An herbal bitterness for the finish, but not overpowering. Citrus peel astringency along with the malt. Interesting aromatics. Label says it's brewed with citrus peel, cranberries, spices, and galangal root.

Attractive orangey-amber color in the tulip. Modest foam but plenty of spritz on the tongue. Quite delicious sipping brew that's not too strong. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a dimpled mug. Bottled 10/31/17.

Appearance: rich amber hue with just the tiniest hint of haze and a thick finger of frothy ivory foam. Festive indeed!

Smell: interestingly spicy; the combination of orange peel, earthy bitterness and galangal are reminiscent of a craft cocktail. The orange peel is especially pungent right at the top of the aroma; I really like it.

Taste: the bitter orange peel is super far forward in the flavor, and it complements the earthier undertones so well. This feels like a very well-executed example of a mulled beer. Very good.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: man, I just want to drink this thing by the fireside with a good book. Wonderful.
