Poured from a 500ml bottle into a speiglau BA glass.

Look is a dark ruby amber with little to no head.

Aroma is deep vanilla slight fruity candy notes.

Taste is deep dark fruits with a vanilla bourbon at the end.

Belgian strong dark ales are not my thing, yet bourbon barrel aging this beer makes it so much better. Top notch. You have to get your hands on this.

Poured into a Reuben's Brew small snifter. Pours pitch black, opaque in the glass with a fine, light tan head with good retention and nice lacing. Aroma dominated by bourbon, with dark lightly toasty malt, dark stone fruit, figs and dates, licorice. Flavor is caramel malt, brown sugar, figs, dates, dark stone fruit, vanilla, bourbon; hints of licorice and nuts. Rich, semi sweet and complex. Mild red wine vinousness in the finish, bourbon and light oak. Medium, lightly viscous mouth feel. The flavor profile is similar to blended strong ales from other breweries, rich and complex. I little bit of lightness hints at Belgian yeast, but the Belgian character is not strong after the barreling. This had a lot going on, but everything fit together. Well integrated and flavorful. I'm going back for a few more bottles. The bottle suggests not aging further, but I think this would be a good candidate for cellaring. Will report back. Damned tasty.

Absolutely fantastic. Deep ruby color, thin off-white head. Smells like molasses and some Bourbon. Tastes like Bourbon, molasses, cloves and vanilla. I am so pleased with this one. Thank you, Black Raven.

2016 Vintage drank 11/27/16
Dusty brown of beaten leather with a nice little tan head that settles into a crown and dusting, and leaves its mark along the edge of the glass beautifully.

Nose brings elements sweet vanilla bourbon to the forefront with a soft stone fruit and dates and raisins and other goodness you'd expect.

Much the same we start with dark sweet sticky raisins and figs and dates soaked in bourbon and dusted with a light hit of cocoa with hints of leather and tobacco. This beer impresses me more for its restraint and subtle melding than it does by being in your face and over the top (don't mistake this though: the bourbon is certainly there both in flavour and heat) and gives more more of a mature as opposed to brash impression.

Light sprtizy carbonation sits atop a body that is the thin of loose sheaves of paper, not a watery thinness.

Really dig this one. Will have to do some experimenting comparing year to year...

Bottle Date: sometime in 2016
Palate Contaminants: other beer

Appearance is a translucent dark brown. It has some degree of opaqueness because there's more light on the edges, but it's not clear by any means. Slight amount of head.

The principal scent is cola. I'll also call molasses and what I can best describe as cloves plus cinnamon.

The taste certainly has bourbon, and I would call it the sweetest bourbon I've ever had (although the brew itself falls in the pleasant range). Cloves – and a little accompanying honey – are right behind that. Cola nut is still there, and quite a bit, too. There's also some burnt sugar hints, somewhere between rum and molasses.

There's lots of heavy sweet cream. The heat is well toned down, yet still detectable, almost as though it were spice. It still retains a fair amount of carbonation, coarse, but not prickly.

375ml bottle served in a large snifter. 2016 vintage.

Pours a dark brown, kind of hazy, not a lot of head, medium amount of fine carbonation. Smell is very strong bourbon, vanilla, with some belgian-style aromas like dates in the background. Smells a little boozy.

Taste is sweet, dates, vanilla, charred wood, raisins...it's actually very interesting. I was not confident that the bourbon flavors would blend well with the belgian dark flavors, but it's good.

Mouthfeel is smooth, just slightly effervescent, a little bit filmy. Overall, good and interesting.
