Pours a nice ruby red with a decent but rapidly evaporating head. The aroma lays low, a sort of unspecified sweetness and slight but not off-putting rancidness. Taste is much better than the smell, not too sweet yet full of raisins and toffee nonetheless. Just the right amount of hop bitterness in the mix. Mouthfeel is smooth and unassuming.

The beer is ruby in color with large malt aromatics, delicious malt flavors and a full bodied finish.

It's built around malted barley with hops playing a balancing role.

Look: 1 finger brown-white head, brown body.

Smell: Sweet caramel, marshmallow, notes of peanuts and flowers.

Taste: See above.

Feel: Medium body, medium carbonation, mild alcohol bite.

Other: This is much more dark fruit forward than other scotch ales I've had.

On tap at the brewery; taster glass.

A: Opaque amber with a half finger off-white head that lingered.

S: Charred malts with a bit of peat presence.

T: Malts rule heavy here with a smoky backbone. Some caramel and toffee with dark fruits on the finish. Sweet, robust. Nice.

M: Medium with medium carbonation. Chewy.

O: A decent scotch ale from one of my new favorite breweries. Wish I could get it on a regular basis.

This is an unconventional Scotch Ale. It's got the malty and caramel character, and the smooth body you'd expect. But it's also got a noticeable hoppy aspect to it, particularly noticeable as it warms. It's not bitter, but it does have some hops. The result is a beer with surprising complexity.

The 6.9% ABV (on the bomber I had) is not noticeable. I guessed 5.5% before looking at the label.

If you find Scotch Ales a bit boring (as many do), give this one a try. It's not the best beer in Black Raven's lineup, but it's pretty good, and well worth repeated visits.
