22 oz bottle poured into stemless wine glass - bottle dated Feb 18 2014

A: golden, slightly hazy appearance. small, cotton white head. not much retention.

S: butter??? i am getting a buttery smell with minor notes of citrus and hops...strange.

T: okay, this is going to sound crazy but i am getting a rosemary, olive oil taste with that buttery taste I was smelling, almost like what i would taste with a lavash bread at a fancy restaurant...i guess you could call the rosemary taste piney but very unique and not like other ipas i have had that i would describe as piney.

M: heavier mouthfeel than the color or style would imply but in line with a beer that has strong butter smell/taste. pretty heavy.

O: not at all what i was expecting...love black raven's trickster IPA and I generally enjoy IPAs with lots of citrus so i had very high hopes for this one...didnt meet those expectations and was just an odd beer all around. might have to try another time to see if i just got a bad bottle but definitely not going to make this a regular in my IPA lineup.

A fine-looking, fine-smelling IPA, but the lemon peel flavors are just weird. For me, they absolutely do not work, bringing a mouth-puckering bitterness that mixes poorly with the hops. I go between thinking it’s okay, and not wanting to drink it at all.

Clear golden amber in the wine glass. A quick flash of bubbles and a wispy mustache of foam. Strange musty odor, though eventually some citrus oils emerge. Prickly carbonation plus the acidic and rather hot mouthfeel.

The malt is pretty faint and doesn't make much of an impression. Just a slight sweetness and maybe a crackery sensation. The first taste is indeed rosemary. That's when I looked at the label to see this is actually brewed with citrus. The aftertaste is an intruiguing lime peel taste with a hint of citron. The rye does add a llittle spiciness which accentuates the hot peel and pith on the lips

This is an interesting reach into flavors that may not be very suited to beers. I blame Stone for their grapefruit concoction. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at QFC Market off East 45th St. in Seattle.

22oz bottle poured into a large mug. 095 D-4 D658 is the date on the bottom. Not a clue what that means.

Pours clear, golden, with a smallish coarse white head and medium slow active carbonation. Smell is juicy, citrusy, slightly floral, slightly piney.

Taste is strong citrus rind. Strong citrus zest bitterness. Overpoweringly citrus bitterness. If you like that flavor, you will like that beer. But, it's overbalanced in that direction.

Mouthfeel is dry and light. Overall, not too bad, but you better like citrus rind bitterness.

L: Pours a light straw gold color, with a small creamy white head that dissipates fairly quick but leaves some on top. No lacing on glass.

S: Citrus and some tropical fruit and pine. A bready malt and when it is colder notes of clove and grassy hops. The clove doesn't fit in well with the rest of the aroma.

T: Grassy earthy floral hops and lots of citrus and lemon pith. There is a strong lemon pith bitterness, that gets slight much on the palate.

F: Pretty light body with medium carbonation.

O: A creative take on an IPA that doesn't fully come together.

22oz bottle served in pint glass. Beer is hazy yellow in color and carries a large white head. Smells like the inside of the hop freezer at your local homebrew store on brew day -- fresh! Green and grassy. Flavor starts out mild but a couple of distinctive bitter notes pick up in the middle of the palate and linger there for a while. First I notice lemon peel. BITTER lemon peel. Not much fruit juice here. And second an intense, grainy, rye flavor. I would guess this is an 80 IBU beer, and with very little residual sugar to balance it out (their website claims 77. WYD?)

The good news is that unlike many Washington IPAs the hop character in this beer is pretty interesting, not merely a Cascade bomb. The bad news is that this beer is as bitter and unbalanced as any of them. For me, not my favorite.

Thanks to screamforme for this one... Lots of citrus pith bitterness backed by an herbal earthiness that I find very interesting... The malts are a bit weird and seem a little discombobulated but I like this just fine... I love the earthiness... Almost reminds me of an organic patchouli aroma... Bitter, bitter, bitter.... Not aspirin like but more orange peel.... Glad i got to try this... Nice beer that seemed to really grow on me as it warmed and opened up....
