On tap at Black Raven Brewery.

Look: Deep and dark body. Thin, dark-mocha head.
Smell: Caramel. Caramel. Bourbon front and center. Barrel/wood has a good grip.
Taste: Wood. Bourbon. Caramel, molasses, sweetness, malts.
Feel: Thick. Low carbonation. It is missing the thick lather I look forward to in well-made beer.

Overall - At first I was a bit disappointed. As the old man warmed up, he began to show his true colors. Grandfather is bold and displays his stylish ways as he wakes up. The bourbon barrel plays a huge role in this beers portfolio. Bourbon barrel, bourbon barrel, bourbon barrel.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours pitch black, opaque in the glass with a fine, half finger medium brown head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, bourbon, dark chocolate, light oaky vanilla, a touch boozy. Flavor is dark toasted malt with light char, bourbon, rich dark chocolate, oak then developing a really appealing chocolate caramel with more up front char and an hint of hops in the finish. Medium bodied with a nice light creaminess. Starts with classic bourbon aged stout flavors, but the finish is really interesting and tasty. A little bit boozy and with some char starkness in the finish, but this does not really detract from a great flavor progression. It took a long time to finally get to try this (by picking it up at the brewery during the short time it was available), and worth the wait. A world class barreled American stout. If this improves with a year on it, it's going to be awesome. A little rounding of the flavors in the finish and this would be near perfection.

500th Beer! Had the '11 at Brouwer's Big Wood Event. Really nicely integrated flavours and good barrel character. It would have been 4.5 + but I felt that it was just starting to fall away slightly. I'm looking forward to trying this fresh!

2010 on tap on 12-21-12

Aged for a year in Heaven Hill 20 barrels then in stainless tanks for another year.

A - Served a dark deep brown, but not quite black with a dark tan head made up of very lard bubbles that linger around for a long time.

S - I let this one sit for awhile to warm up. Lots of nice bourbon tones are hard to miss, then some wood, vanilla, carmel, and dark fruit come through.

T - Tons of nice bourbon, more wood here and some subtle vanilla.

D - Lower carbonation and a heavier body. Very easy drinking for 10.5%

O - A really nice treat. I am it was still on. A great way to end the world, or start my Christmas vacation.

Silver medal winner at World Beer Cup 2012 in Category 22: Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Stout (58 Entries). I don't remember the story behind this beer, aside from the fact that it's a bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout.

A: Black as pitch with a finger of light brown froth.

S: Firm dark chocolate presence with expressive bourbon and lesser notes of oak. Light vanilla with a dash of licorice. There's a little oxidation but it's not detracting. Caramel is in the background.

T: Pleasant blend of bourbon, caramel, and chocolate with a touch of vanilla and evident brown sugar. Smooth flavor with a low bitterness and a hint of oxidation. Bourbon chocolate finish with a little booze.

M: Full body with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is silky and sticky with a nice level of alcohol warming on the palate.

Overall: Very nice. After a disappointing first experience with Black Raven I'm pleased to see that the hype over this brewery in the Pacific Northwest has some basis in reality.
