Brewed with the finest two-row malted barley and German variety hops, Ghost River Golden’s mellow, refreshing character is accentuated by Memphis’ soft water. Munich and caramel malts give this beer enough sweetness to balance the crisp, dry finish.

look: 3.25 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Light gold, white cap with good lace.

Aroma: Creamy malt, not sweet, creamy, as in slightly rounded, slightly sweet, yet both together. Bit of spicy hops.

Taste: Very nice malt cake with hop icing. Listed as a Klosch and that works for me. Slightly spicy tartness, clean finish, no aftertaste.

Texture: Wouldn't call it medium but it's certainly not thin.

Overall: This a pleasant lightweight that punches a bit above it's class. More of a food accompaniment that stand alone refreshment but it can do that too. It really doesn't do much more than Miller High Life but has much better manners.

Pours an effervescent gold with 2+ fingers of rocky cream colored head. Better than average head retention & lacing

S: Sweet breadyness

T: Follows the nose, graininess & soapiness up front. More graininess as this warms, dryness & soapiness as this warms. Finishes grainy & dry, with some sweetness

MF: Light body with firm carbonation, skews sweet

Drinks easy but nothing special, a little too sweet for the style

Limpid yellow-gold with mild effervescence and an initial finger and a half of head.
It smells unpleasantly grainy. Ah? It's a kölsch. All becomes clear. Mildly sweet-sulfuric lager yeast as well.
Huh! It tastes okay. Way too grainy and sweet, but at least not watery swill. This is a clean, delicate Lite Beer. I don't understand why craft brewers continue to manufacture craft beers that craft beer drinkers allege to revile. Either we all secretly love lagers or there's a wide swath of the populace willing to spend 40% more for gussied up Bud Light.

Draft at Buffalo Wild Wings in Germantown, TN. I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. You never know what to expect from a golden ale bit this was a very good beer. This would be a staple in my refrigerator if I had access to it.

Pale auburn draft pour with thick white foam. Biscuit and floral nose. Floral creamy wheat flavors. Lite and slightly creamy mouthfeel. Overall a little too wheaty.

A nice balanced beer. Toasted malted flavors permeate the beer but it's still a smooth beer that pairs well with anything. It has a sweet note but they don't linger for long.

look: 3.75 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.25

Poured from 12oz bottle into a clear mug.

Appearance: rich golden hue with a tiny touch of haze and a moderately strong effervescence. Head pours a finger of fizzy, frothy white foam. Quite nice.

Smell: a bit on the sweet side for a Kölsch, but then again the label markets this as a golden ale, not a Kölsch. Grainy, slightly fruity; frankly, with its sweetness and lack of direction it doesn't really grab me.

Taste: again, it's just too sweet. There's a bit of maltiness here, but nothing in the way of astringent graininess or bitter hops to take the edge off the sweetness. There's just a serious lack of balance here.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body but with a big carbonation and a pretty satisfying creaminess.

Overall: this is definitely more like an American blonde ale than a Kölsch, but in either case it doesn't strongly appeal to me.

The beer looks exactly as it's supposed to. It's not a Kolsch. It's a golden ale. If you didn't figure that out, you were already in for the wrong ride. This beer really opens up and its floral, has a great softness due to the water they use, and it has a slight sweetness and bitterness thats perfectly balanced. Overall a great beer for session or whatever. Perfect for all seasons.

I have had this beer in a bottle, on tap and have also picked up a few growlers from the brewery. It's a very enjoyable beer. It's light but not too light.

A: Golden with white, creamy head
T: Very smooth. Easy to drink.
M: Silky, smooth finish.

I really like this beer. Perfect beer to enjoy outside.

A - Pours a crystal clear light golden color with tons of bubbles and a 1 finger frothy white head with good retention. Beautiful beer.

S - Very light smells. Mainly malts. Sweet smelling upfront and perhaps a lttile yeasty. Also detected a slight grassy odor.

T - Sweet, grainy malts. A very earthy beer. I really enjoyed it. Very, very slight bitter hops on the finish

M - Extremely light beer. Feels silky and smooth. Quite enjoyable

O - Great Kolsch. I found it to be very easy drinking but still quite flavorful. Definately a beer one could sit down and have multiples of.

Pours to a frothy white head and deep gold color. Aroma is grassy hops and sweet malt. Favor presents with a grainy start, biscuity, vinous middle and clean, mildly hoppy finish. Mouthfeel is light and co2is generous. had this beer on tap the night before this review and have to say on tap is definitely better. Overall, a decent Kolsch and a good crossover brew for the mid-south.

Pours a clear, rich golden with a creamy off-white head. A light grain aroma. Taste is sweet and light caramel up front, followed by a rich cream flavor, next up is some doughy bread, and a zesty light bitter finish. Mouthfeel is good. Over a nice kolsch, I would get this again.

Had this beer at a concert in Memphis purchased from the Brewers stand , assume that it was pretty fresh. To me this is a good night out , day at the lake, mowing the lawn kind of beer. Far better than the mass produced St Louis Swill , nothing to sit around and sip on at the house or share for a special moment , but a good summer time hot weather beer to enjoy.

Had on tap in Memphis.

Beer was a medium gold and slightly hazy with not much in the way of a head.

Faint grainy aroma with some wet grass and hay.

The flavor had plenty of bread and hay much like a Euro lager. There is definitely a soft wheat characteristic which does help drinkability. Light bitterness.

Overall, a pretty forgetable beer. Drinkability is extremely high but flavors are somewhat lacking. Not offensive but not impressive either.

Tasted On: 07-17-2012
Freshness: Not indicated
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Tulip pint
Purchased: 6-pack from Kroger

Pours a clear, golden color with lots of bubbles seen in the glass. The head is 2 fingers high, white, showing a fair amount of retention and good lacing.

Aromas include sweet malt and a bit of floral hops, with a touch of spices.

The taste is clean, with a slightly sweet and bready malt profile. Bitterness is very low.

Well carbonated, it has a crisp mouthfeel and medium body. Finishes on the dry side, but is well-balanced.

Overall very easy drinking, simple but enjoyable session beer.

poured from tap into a pint glass. pours a solid gold color with no real head

a bit aromatically challenged with some aromas of malts and a touch of grains

light bodied with some flavors of malts. Lacking some flavor, but the feel is nice

a pretty forgettable beer. I didn't even realize it was supposed to be a kolsch. It didn't really taste like one or be one

Got this one in the 2012 Birthday BIF from bstaffor; thanks Brian! Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into my Duvel Green tulip.

a - Pours a clear bright yellow color with two inches of white head and moderate carbonation evident. Head lasts for less then a minute and leaves no lacing.

s - Smells of grains, wheat, bready malts, and some light earthy malts. Not bad, but very bland and nonexistent.

t - Tastes of grains, bready malts, wheat, earthy notes, light lemon, and some tea/herbal notes. Better then the nose but still quite bland and light.

m - Light body and moderate to high carbonation. Crisp, a little too carbonated, otherwise easy to drink.

o - Overall a very average beer. Nose and taste and pretty bland, with some light herbal notes in the taste. Easy to drink but nothing special. Wouldn't seek it out again.

Poured from the bottle into a stange glass

A: Gold color, probably a tad bit darker than the other kolsches I've had

S: Not really any discernible aroma. It's possible to smell a little bit of the malt, but nothing more than that.

T: Slightly sweet with a hoppy, but not overly bitter finish. Not bad really.

M: Very light and totally drinkable

O: It's alright and totally worth a try. It's not a bad beer by any stretch of the imagination, but there's nothing about it that made me say, "wow!"

Thanks to pitasoup. 12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a crystal clear light golden color. A small fizzy white head develops quickly and disappears even faster. Not much lacing is left on the glass. Good carbonation is evident from appearance alone.

Not much going on in the nose. There is a sublte malt sweetness and perhaps some zesty lemon aroma but not much else. There isn't any hop character detected.

The taste has a little more to it than the nose. The sweet malt is still what stands out most. There is a touch of some bready malt as well. Not much in the way of hops here either. The lemon that was in the nose also isn't present.

This beer is very crisp and very clean. Light bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Very easy drinking.

This beer strikes me as a great summer beer. The flavors and aromas aren't very bold but they aren't bad either. It's good enough for an easy drinking beer.

From 12oz bottle to Bruges hybrid glass on 1/30/12
*From notes

-- Bottle purchased at Buster's Liquor Store in Memphis, TN on 1/20/12 --

A: Extremely clean. It's a pale, fair yellow in color. A standard pour yields a loose and white 1.5 finger head. Minimal lacing and collar.

S: Some untanned leather, dry corn flakes, unbuttered popcorn and clean, untoasted malt.

T: Crisp and a bit sweet. A hearty helping of creamed corn steals the show here. The back end features just a touch of white smoke.

M: Lively and playful carbonation up front, which quickly whisps away to reveal a light to medium body.

O: In no way does Ghost River's Golden Ale resemble a traditional Kolsch, though it didn't prevent me from moderately enjoying it. This actually comes off like a cream ale, not too dissimilar to Sixpoint's Sweet Action. If you're looking for a reasonably flavorful craft session option, this would most likely deliver your fix.

Bottle poured into a pint glass. Clear yellow body with a touch of orange hue. A one-finger white head that dissipates quickly and leaves no lacing.

Very little aroma. A bit of sweet malt, a hint of lemon.

The taste is a little better; the malt flavor is still very sweet, but is followed by a light citrus kick. Not exactly a strong Kolsch, but it comes close.

Light mouthfeel and very drinkable. Would be a decent summer brew.

reviewed blind via Blind Beers BIF 6, thanks to pitasoup

big head, bright gold/yellow color. Head is slow to fall and puts some frosty lacing on the glass.

Sweet fruity/grassy malt. Light. No real sense of hops. Aroma is very subdued- not an aromatic beer.

Taste is similar. Sweet, light malt. Mildly bready. Some bitterness in the finish, along with a metallic twang in the finish. It grows on me as I sip it and it warms up a bit.

Mouthfeel- beer is light in flavor but a bit more heavy body-wise. Good carbonation, lingering sweetness is pleasant.

I like this beer. Not much for malt or hops- easy-drinking stuff.

This beer would be great in the summertime heat.

Got a 12 oz bottle out of a six-pack shortly after started distribution in Memphis area so figured I'd review.

Aroma
Sweet toffee/caramel scent no real hop presence, only sweetish scent plus some malt

Mouthfeel
Medium-high carbonation, enough that it hides the taste a bit to me. Bit heavier than water and has a bit of presence on the palette

Appearance
Light amber in color with maybe a hint of copper, poured to slight head in 1/2 liter globe which quickly dissipated. No lacing, bit dissapointing regarding head retention/behavior

Taste
Scent doesn't mislead, there's a sweet toffee/caramel like taste in there with a slight sourish note maybe. My guess is it's meant to be positioned as an approachable beer for non craft beer drinkers and not be offensive. No real bitterness to speak of. I like this although I don't know that it's a beer I find worth paying craft beer prices for.

Drinkability
Rather, easily sessionable beer.

Overall
I think this is a good drinkable beer that has a nice sweetish malt twist. I don't think it's quite a kolsch and may be more of a blonde or even a cream ale in thinking of it. Not spectacular, maybe a good starter beer for those who might start drinking craft/imported non fizzy yellow water...

A- Hazy golden with a two finger head on it.
S- Smell is very earthy, with some graininess and yeast scents playing in.
T- Earthy, with some sweetness. Slight hop taste to finish. I like my kolschs but the flavors just didn't mesh well in this one.
M- Sharp carbonation that distracts from this beer. When you have a beer with subtle flavors, sharp carbonation can be distracting. This beer suffered from that.
D- Sessionable, to be sure, but this beer needs a little bit of polishing.
