Style: Kölsch

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewed with the finest two-row malted barley and German variety hops, Ghost River Golden’s mellow, refreshing character is accentuated by Memphis’ soft water. Munich and caramel malts give this beer enough sweetness to balance the crisp, dry finish.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Teku glass.

Limpid yellow-gold with mild effervescence and an initial finger and a half of head.
It smells unpleasantly grainy. Ah? It's a kölsch. All becomes clear. Mildly sweet-sulfuric lager yeast as well.
Huh! It tastes okay. Way too grainy and sweet, but at least not watery swill. This is a clean, delicate Lite Beer. I don't understand why craft brewers continue to manufacture craft beers that craft beer drinkers allege to revile. Either we all secretly love lagers or there's a wide swath of the populace willing to spend 40% more for gussied up Bud Light.

I have reevaluated this one over the years. Will it win a festival? No chance. Is it worth an article in the latest craft beer publication? Hardly.

But this is the quintessential beer for a hot, humid Memphis summer day. It is drinkable, flavorful, and sessionable. It is super refreshing with some BBQ nachos at a Redbirds game or a solid addition to the cooler at Pickwick Lake. If it is hot in the bluff city, grab one of these and enjoy.

On tap at Butcher’s Shop. Pours golden with white head. Aroma is of pale malt and apples. Body is medium and crisp. Taste is of pale malt and some hops. The brew tastes like macro.

A Kolsh is not an ale. What a disappointment.

Draft at Buffalo Wild Wings in Germantown, TN. I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. You never know what to expect from a golden ale bit this was a very good beer. This would be a staple in my refrigerator if I had access to it.

On tap in Memphis. My first Ghost River beer. Actually not a bad brew. Light but has some decent flavor. Better than any macro they had.

Pale auburn draft pour with thick white foam. Biscuit and floral nose. Floral creamy wheat flavors. Lite and slightly creamy mouthfeel. Overall a little too wheaty.

Sadly, this is a lackluster golden little or no single element that allows it to stand up, much less stand out with the competition.
