Stone and Wood's Pacific Ale. It's fair to say this beer revolutionised the craft beer scene in Australia. While it's widely accepted that the Likes of Little Creatures and to an extent Matilda Bay started the scene in Australia - our Sierra Nevada moment if you like, Stone and Wood Pacific Ale took Australian craft beer by the scruff of the neck and gave it a right old shake up. Now every brewery craft, micro or macro are coming out with their takes on fruity, refreshing Pacific Ale style beers. Let's see if it still stacks up.

Vessel: 425ml Schooner glass at the Royal Exhibition Hotel in Surry Hills Sydney.

Appearance: Lovely bright yellow colour, very Hazy and cloudy. Head retention is poor and settles to a thin ring atop the beer. Pacific Ales are bright, inviting, and ooze refreshment on what is a hot Sydney summer day. This is ticking those boxes.

Aroma: Bright citrus notes, lemon, lime, a hint of orange zest. Breaking through the initial citrus punch is mango flesh, and peach. A light creamy sweetness hold it all together. Having said that, the aroma does feel somewhat muted.

Taste: Follows the noise. Bright citrus and lemon notes with a hint of mango, it's got a good punch of bitterness, and the lemony citrus notes provide some acidic sourness which increases the drinakbility and refreshment value. A creamy but not overly sweet malt flavour compliments the tangy flavours in the front of the mouth.

Feel: It's thin, but has some body to it courtesy of the malt creaminess. Well carbonated, highly drinkable.

Overall: There's a reason why this beer is so popular. It's crisp, refreshing, highly drinkable in large quantities. It epitomises the Australian craft beer scene, and ticks all the boxes you're looking for on a hot summers day. I don't know about paying $10.50 for a Schooner of it though...

Found this one a long time ago and got my hands on it again for the rating.

Love the colour on it, very hazy but a nice glow to it.

The fruit punch on the nose was enjoyable which I found came through in the taste.

One of my favourites and glad i found it again!

very light and very tasty slightly hazy pale here, delicate and sessionable, a lovely southern hemisphere hop profile with nuances of elderflower and lime leaf and very little bitterness, and deliciously fresh in my experience with it on draft in london. its radiant yellow in the glass, a little bit cloudy but still very light looking, almost backlit in low light, with an average white head on it but with nice retention. the aroma and flavor are floral to me, a little more citrus as it sits, herbal too, lemon verbena, lemongrass, white tea, a little white wine even, its short of juicy but it has a wetness to it that makes the hops really sing, and the balance is there from a dry but flavorful grain base. its fun how expressive this feels, like the flavor is so wrapped up with the texture that they are inseparable, each enhancing the other, everything very intentional, a level of care here that is uncommon. sometimes pale ale feels like a throwaway style for brewers, who put all their energy into more trendy and popular ipa types and just make these for the old school crowd, the first generation craft drinker, something more approachable, less challenging and dynamic, who drinks pale ale anymore anyway? but this is quite the opposite, a showpiece, really unique brew in a samey space, gorgeously refined. an extremely enjoyable pint and one of their most popular offerings for good reason!

1 pint on tap - very hazy and pale yellow in color. Tropical fruity flavour with a tangy finish. Easy to drink, refreshing and great for the summer. Would be even better if the aroma can be stronger.

330ml bottle. Golden yellow and hazy. The ceamy head quickly reduces to a smear but leaves a few arcs of lacing. Smells of ripe pineapple. Taste is light and fresh, pineapple & galia melon. Mouthfeel is clean and dry with moderate carbonation. A beautiful, subtle, super refreshing Australian pale ale.
