Notes: Expansions is a light saison aged in oak on late harvest gewürztraminer, showing distinct aromas of lychee and deep, complex rose. A soft allspice note fills in the background. Bracingly dry and pleasantly tart, the beer elegantly expresses how saison and wine can easily link up.

just a gorgeous and brilliant draft pour from upright in this style again, i know they have their critics, but there are very few brewers i get more excited to drink saison from than these guys, and this one with the german wine grapes is very special. somewhat darker and maltier in looks and taste than i expected though, honestly not all that delicate, pushing amber or at least bronze in color, short head on top, lazy but not disappearing entirely. nose of sharp white wine, minerals, fresh apricors, cut white fleshy polleny flowers, and some lightly wild elements not like cultured brett, really appealing to me. light tartness when i taste it, but way more funky and saison-esque than sour, especially with the tangy grapes and the light bit of sweetness they add, its so interesting and different, earthy with the fuller grain profile in here, more than just pale wheat for sure, and not all that dry. white wine and effervescence collide like champagne, herbal hoppy character is here too, and some insanely curious esters, more and more as it warms. the grapes make this really unique, but so does the fermentation profile, and the level of quality is unrivaled. so glad to have these guys in colorado, they truly make some of the best beers in this style that exist in this market. stoked to find this today at backcountry in boulder...

On tap at Upright.

A mildly hazy light orange with a white head that falls off leaving nice lacing, this looks good. The nose is so fruity and brilliant. Lychee, rose water, honey, a mild spice with a little clove and floral Sichuan peppercorn. Over ripe grape, fruity, mildly jammy and mildly oxidized. A mild grainy note is present as well. A touch of oak and vanilla. A little allspice? The palate opens quite tart with ripe lemons, a touch of key lime, floral grapes and honey with gooseberry, lychee, a little preserved citrus. The mid palate has a light oak note to go with the grain. The base Saison blends extremely harmoniously with the grape character. Mild rose notes as well. There's a mild tartness that lingers, mildly lactic, that closes out the palate quite wonderfully. Light in body and softly carbonated, this is excellent. Very harmonious.
