Thanks Dale!

Rose colored pour with a wispy white crown. Aromas of wine and wood that follow into the taste. Lightly tart and ever so lightly tannic, wine and wood, wine and wood. Light cherry flavor with a bit of spice, wine and spice. Could use alittle more body, but a smooth drinker none the less. I'm am getting kisses also...

750ml bottle into tulip snifter.
bottle number 47 of 191.

Pours a clear amber orange, with perhaps a slight rose hue when held to the light. It has a bubbly off white head.

The aroma is of tart pinot noir, with some faint oak notes.

The taste is sweet, with hints of cherry and more of the tart and vinous oak notes.

The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, with a crisp, fairly dry finish. The bubbly, light carbonation fits quite well.

A very well done and easy drinking beer, though I agree with some of the other sentiment expressed, in that I would like to see what some more time in the pinot noir barrels would have done to help add a bit more strength and depth to the flavor.

Reviewed from notes dictated into voice notes on my iphone.

Shared by dvelcich at a tasting-- thanks buddy.

Light orangey color with a small head. Some little bubbles with thin legs and no lacing. Not a good looking saison in general...

The nose is vinous and earthy. Very little about this beer reminds me of a saison, or at least, a siason that I would have interest in drinking.
A slight tartness in here, but that's about it. This is just boring to me. Nothing about this makes me want more of it. The flavor adds a slight earthy brett note.

The body has decent carbonation.

My overall impression of this beer is pretty low. This is another beer from upright that hasn't impressed me. I have tried about 6 or 7 different beers by them, but didn't feel like reviewing them because I wanted to be "fair" to a newer brewery. Now though, I am pretty sure that I have a feel for what they do and what they go for-- I just genuinely don't like it too much.
This is about average for a saison to me.

Thanks to Dale for sending this one to me.

A: The pour is a dark amber color, lots of brown with a bit of red, and some dark khaki foam.

S: Spices come through on the nose quite strongly. It's almost like cinnamon, perhaps some nutmeg and all-spice. There is a bit of oak and red wine in there as well as some cherry notes. A light tartness in the background.

T: Just as much spice to the flavor. Cherries, cinnamon, and nutmeg flavors are prominent. A bit of wood and lots of red wine flavors with a light acidity of lemon zest and green apple.

M: Light to medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O: I thought this was pretty decent, though not as good as T'okay. Looking forward to some of the other Sole Composition beers.

On tap at the Horse Brass yesterday. This appears to be a "one off" seasonal from Upright, and I've seen references to pinot noir barrel aging, as well as blending spices and cherry juice. In any event...

The beer pours a reddish amber color with good head retention and considerable lacing. The nose is pretty exotic, showcasing lavendar, dry citrus and a hint of sour funk. On the palate, the sour is a bit more prominent, but with some noticeable cherry and light honey as well. Mouthfeel is fairly light, and there's a noticeable drop off of flavor on the finish. Still, this is a fairly tasty beer from Upright, and I thought drinkability was pretty good. The alcohol is barely noticeable...

While I wish this beer had a bit more flavor, I thought it still an enjoyable seasonal beer from Upright.

Thanks to Jason for opening the bottle.

A: Reddish orange with a big white head, good retention, and nice lacing.

S: Pronounced cherry aroma. Lightly spicy with restrained alcohol and some grape. Faint oak. Cinnamon?

T: Cherry juice with a lower moderate sweetness. There's a little oak, as well as some grape notes. Mostly lactic, needs acidity or something. Finishes a bit simple.

M: Light body with upper moderate carbonation. Sticky and dry mouthfeel.

Overall: Nice aroma but a somewhat simple flavor that seems lacking.

Bottle shared at the May Santa Cruz tasting. Pours and orangey brown color with a fulffy white head. Aroma starts out with a blast of sulfur/rotten eggs and copper. Clearly some sort of infection here. Luckily with a little (lot) of swirling and waiting, it dies off enough to give a better impression. Bretty notes and wine are the foremost aromas underneath the lingering sulfur. Flavor is very appley, like apple turnover with cinnamon and other spices. Didn't get a whole lot of cherry. There's also a lingering metallic note in the flavor. Could be good without the infection.

Chilled bottle into a glass. Thanks, Jason! From notes.

A: Pours a hazy chestnut body with amber tint against the light. Small off-white head.

S: Smells of wine barrel and juniper (?). It reminds me heavily of gin.

T: Wine, juniper, spice (allspice or nutmeg, couldn't quite place it) and a mild tartness on the finish -- likely the wine influence. The tartness accentuates the barrel tannins in the finish.

M: Good body.

O: I thought it was pretty drinkable, and we all remarked on how interesting it was, but I don't think anyone fell in love with it.

It appears light reddish orange with a small white head.

It smells slightly of pinot. There is a pleasant oaky smell. A bit of a banana, grape and cherry smell is also noticeable. There is a slightly tart and sweet smell coming from the beer as well.

It tastes initially a tad bit peppery. There is a nice wine earthy taste to the beer. There is a nice subdued sweetness that is followed by a mellow cherry flavor. There is a nice oaky flavor throughout the beer. There is a bit of a spice flavor in the beer that makes the beer finish in a dry way. Though the beer has a very nice taste the beer does not taste as strong as I would like. At the brewery I was told that they aged to beer in wine barrels for only one month so that might be why it does not taste that strong. If they aged the beer in the wine barrels for a bit longer I predict that the beer would be a bit more flavorful.

The carbonation is moderate low and it has a water mouth feel to it. The carbonation and mouth feel helps make this beer seem very wine like.

The drinkability of this is very good. It is smooth and easy to drink. This is the kind of beer that I could drink a lot of.

Overall a nice beer. I just wished it had a bit more flavor.

Bottle #189 of 191. Served in a Cigar City snifter.

A - A finger-plus of white foam settles to a thin skim and thicker collar, leaving behind plenty of splotchy lace. The body is a hazy amber color.

S - Tropical fruit funk, wine, oak, vanilla, Christmas spices, mild lactic sourness, and some pale malt sweetness. As it warms up there's an unpleasant sulfur and egg aroma in there.

T - This literally tastes like there is menthol in here. Very mint and clove-forward, but otherwise somewhat bland and bready. Not much wine or barrel flavor here unfortunately.

M - Pleasant active carbonation, medium body, very dry and tannic finish, and no obvious alcohol. There's a strange menthol coolness that lingers for a while.

D - I enjoyed this more than most, but it's still not a great beer. The taste is somewhat boring, but the aroma is quite intriguing if you can avoid the sulfur note.

I didn't remember this being a spiced beer. Maybe that same out more as other aspects faded? Soapy nose and finish. Okay in the middle but the rest is weak.
