Bottle from Nate. Poured into a snifter, the appearance was a burnt bronzed copper color with a thin wisp of a little white semi-foamy head. Quietly dissipated and left some concave sliding lace. The aroma had some sweet caramel/toffee malts, sweet rye, subtle pine/resin, crisp citrus pulp and a touch of earthiness at the end. The flavor leaned towards the sweet side but made a good effort to try and bring the earthy hops in to blend. Nice aftertaste of the blend. Finish was mainly sweet. The palate was about medium bodied with a good sipping quality about it. Carbonation was there, seemed perhaps just shy of where it was supposed to be. ABV felt fine. Overall, I think this is an aged bottle, but I don’t see any dates, only reason why I proceeded was because it seemed like everything turned out pretty good. Slightly makes me wonder what this is like fresh.

Pours clear amber/brown in color with 1/2 inch head. Taste is toasted malt, tree bark, and light earthy hops. Very malty..might use some hop presence. Average to slightly above average strong ale. Nice and malty, but unsure if I would get this again.

Pours reddish brown from the bottle. Malt forward with a nice mouthfeel. At 7.2% it's not that strong of a strone ale. Very drinkable in my opinion. Worth a try.

Hrm...what to expect from this one...it's nebulously called a "strong ale", and as such, the aroma doesn't really skew towards very hoppy or very malty. The former comes across subtly with some notes of earth and pine resin - purely an old-school approach, but that's appropriate here. I pick up some nice caramel, brown sugar, toffee, apricot, and peach notes as well. I'm impressed how it doesn't have a nose redolent of an aged IPA, but actually showcases nuance between the hop/malt balance. Tasting it reveals a gentle hoppiness to open it up (again with the old-school pine resin and earth). After that, the malts take over - and ale esters, I'm happy to report. Notes of cherry and apricot appear around the middle, giving way to a finish of light caramel, graham cracker, and brown sugar. It's a rare beast, this one: a beer that showcases caramel/crystal malt, yet it's actually quite tasty (and balanced). It feels very full and sticky on the palate, but dry enough not to encumber it. Carbonation is a mite low, perhaps as expected. This is a hard style to get right - too little hops and you end up with a car crash of crystal malts; too much hops and your tongue gets ripped out. This hits that happy medium very well. I won't drink this everyday, but it's a very nice treat every so often.

I tried this from the bottle chilled in a tulip pint

The color is deep amber bordering on bronze with 2 finger plus of beige head with average bead and very good retention with lace that sticks in rings. The smell is malt forward with slight toast with a mild hint of yeast with a lightly fruity ester. The feel is mostly malt with a gentle bitterness and mild alcohol in the back with semi-dry finish.

The taste is very good a nice mix of malt flavors with a hop flavor that is interwoven seamlessly with some herbal and mild orange zest qualities to balanced the slight toast and caramel sweetness in the malt. This is a decent 'strong' ale I like the malt flavor with a noticeable rye presence yet there is a little more alcohol than is necessary in the taste -worth trying

12 oz bottle, dated January 2016, poured into a pint glass

A- Clear reddish amber with a three finger off white head.

S- Kind of mild, but nice. Caramel malts, some darker pit fruits, some toffee, beards malts, some earthy hops.

T- Citrus and earthy hops, caramel malts, hint of toasted malts, hints of dark fruits

M- Smooth, medium body.

O- I would call it a light Barelywine. Enjoyable and easy drinking.
