look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Poured from 12oz bottle.

A- Pours a nice deep dark brown color almost black but not quite. One finger deep tan head shows medium retention. Good streaking lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Nice smoked aroma to this right off the bat. Nice surprise I suppose. Roasted malts come through next with a coffee like roast in the backing. Hints of chocolate all throughout the aroma gives a nice balance to the bitterness.

T- Roasted malts come through on the front of the beer. This leads to like in the aroma a nice coffee roast with hints of chocolate. Middle of the beer shows a little more of chocolate coming through with a little alcohol flavor. Ending of the beer is a lot of smoke and chocolate not always blending together making for some interesting flavor with each sip. The alcohol does come through a little more each time as the beer warms up.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is low for the style I thought. A bigger roast and hints of chocolate and smoke left on the palate. Aftertaste is some warming alcohol, smoke, chocolate, and light coffee roast. Flavors were not always blended well but I think the smoke was making it hard to blend well. No aftertaste in this beer at all. Light alcohol drying on the palate.

O- This beer was above average for the style just with the interesting smokey aroma and flavor to it. The ABV never really stood out and for this a couple pints of this would be no problem. Well as long as you like the smoke aroma and flavor. A nice shot at the style from Evolution...would buy this one again.

We finally put down the hops and gave the malt a chance, and quite successfully! This complex beer shows it's depths in many aspects. The scent is anywhere from molasses to oats to coffee, and keep you coming back for another sift of this loaded brews nose "palette"? (More sweet than smoking imo.) The flavor follows the same pattern, melding into a very solid and singular flavor which you would never guess to be 7 malts if blindfolded! The complexity of the multi-malt combination is there, but doesn't tend to linger, giving you a full impression of it's well encompassed flavor. Incredibly drinkable and it's finish is gone just as fast as they came unfortunately... Sooo another round?

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #37 (Feb 2010):

Big, frothy tan head is tempted to overflow but holds strong; dark leather-brown color sheds no glow for the eyes. Dry cocoa powder, hint of charcoal and used coffee grounds infiltrate the nostrils. Smoothness is nearly silky with a creamy backdrop. Roasty to the hilt but does not pass the point of being too much. Burnt sugar, smoky charcoal, Sumatra-roast coffee and unsweetened dark chocolate all come to mind as the malt drops a bomb on the palate. Hint of alcohol and dark fruit in the middle. Hops are a forethought, yet enough is thrown into the mix to help keep any sweetness in check. Pleasant roasty finish.

Top-notch Porter here: If you put your ear up to this beer, you would swear is quietly cries to be with oysters.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle. Best by May 2013 notched onto the side of the label. Picked up by a friend at Stateline on the MD/DE border

A: Dark brown and murky. Dark khaki head, departs pretty quickly, leaving a minor film, slight collar and equally minor lace.

S: Some smoke, some milk chocolate/coffee and dark malts.

T: Milk chocolate, light coffee and again dark malts, enough of a hop presence to keep the sweetness from taking over.

M: Pleasant enough on the tongue and coating the mouth. The body is a bit more then medium and the carbonation is fine for the style.

O: Chocolate and coffee infused porter, not overly sweet. Decent porter, but doubt I'd go for more then one of these.

Pours a hazy dark orange-brown with minimal head. Nice and malty sipper complete with chocolate, caramel, roasted malts, and a touch of hops. Easily a beer I could sit with in the colder months.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a completely opaque, pitch-black color with a quarter of a finger of caramel-colored head that quickly dissolved into a thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass and formed few wispy clouds that gathered into the center of the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very roasty and malty. Strong Notes of freshly baked dark bread. Slight notes of coffee, chocolate and molasses, but not much. Not much in the way of hops, either.

Taste: Very malty, which makes sense as this beer is made with 7 types of malts. However I don’t get much smoky/roasty flavors in this porter as I expect. There are tons of malt however. The beer finishes with some great caramel-like sweetness. Finally, there is no hops bitterness to speak of, which I overall prefer.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied to slightly chewy and with some good carbonation to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 5.8%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is quite a good, solid porter. Not as smoky/roasty as other porters I’ve had, but it is a great malt bomb. I’d certainly get it again.

A: The beer is a shade before black, an extremely dark brown with tight one finger brown head. Nice lacing down the glass.

S: Roasted malt, some coffee, a little bit of chocolate. There is also a nice smoky aroma as well.

T: Nice roasty flavor which melds nicely to some coffee and chocolate. A little caramel near the end and a smoky taste on the finish. The chocolate flavor kicks in again on the finish.

M: Medium bodied, very smooth, low carbonation.

O: Very drinkable, another good beer from Evo!

Pours out a dark, almost black beer with a light tan 2 finger head. Smells sweet, some licorice , a light scent not too powerful. Taste has sweet element, slightly tart, some roasted tastes mixed in. Mouthfeel is basic nothing special. Overall a decent porter.

Evolution's Lucky 7 is quite roasty for a porter. In my mind it's almost a stout. It's got an almost smokey note in the nose; and there's lots of coffee in the flavor. Not that that's a bad thing, it's actually quite good, but I was expecting something a little different given the porter designation. Perhaps the smokiness is throwing me off.

The appearance is quite good as well, leaving thick, broken and craggy rings of tan lace about the glass with each sip. The body is almost black although you can make out a thin sliver of crimson-accented dark mahogany when held to the light.

The aroma, as noted, is a touch smokey over its roastiness. There's a bit of ash as well, but beyond that there's also some very nice yeasty fruitiness.

That carries through into the flavor, but I also pick up a nice dollop of sweet golden caramel within the maltiness. The more it warms the richer it becomes with the flavors opening up and appearing more readily. The chocolate and cocoa widen, and some grassy/floral hop flavors appear. A firm bitterness balances it, and I'm quite pleased that they've kept the acidity in check and it doesn't offer that dark malt 'bite' that's so often found.

It's medium bodied, and smooth across the palate with little zest; leaving it to finish a bit more softly than it might otherwise.

Quite drinkable! This is the first beer I've had from Evolution Brewing and I'm inspired to sample their entire lineup.

I received this in a BIF from lackenhauser. Thanks, steve!

Pours black with a thin tan head that leaves nice lacing.

Smells of chocolate, caramel, and some mroe sweetness. A little light on the nose, but still very nice.

The taste is full of chocolate, caramel, and a sweet bitterness to finish.

Mouthfeel is a tad light, unfortunately, but still nice. Could be more creamy.

Overall this was a good beer. Nothing too intense, but still a well crafted porter.
