Evolution Craft Brewing Co. "Jacques Au Lantern"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without production codes or freshness dating
$2 @ Wegmans, Collegeveille, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Ah, a Belgian style pumpkin ale, this should be nice, or at the very least, a nice change of pace. It's a dark copper in color with a little bit of a ruby or crimson sheen, and the head is a short cap of off-white. The aroma offers some cinnamon amidst sweetish sugary malt and yeasty clove. Unfortunately the head has already died down and I don't see any lacing left behind. This is a "beer clean" glass that I just used with very good results so I have to blame it on the beer in this case. Perhaps it's the spices. Anyway, the flavor is similar to the aroma but much more fruity. I get juicy red apple, some golden apple, and a touch of plum. The malt is like dark sugar. Dried dark brown sugar, but really more like a sugar syrup that's been cooked almost to the point of burning. Darkly caramelish and fruity! The spices remain, cinnamon and nutmeg, and they're not overdone. The combination with the clove from the Belgian yeast works well. It's only got 20 IBUs per the label, and that seems right, and as such it finishes semi-dry with some sugar and fruit remaining. It's pleasant though, it's as if what you taste upfront just softens a but and then gently fades away of a period of a minute or so. And why can't it be a little sweet? I'd certainly rather have that than over-spiced! Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. It's nicely done all around in my opinion, and I think it will make a great beer to enjoy while handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, but also a nice dessert or after dinner beer during the entire fall and winter season.

Not overly spiced, which allows the pumpkin through (unlike most) & Belgian yeast is a good compliment to the pumpkin

A: Brown in color, very hazy, a small amount of head that disappears almost immediately.

S: Light pumpkin as well as pie aromas. Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and perhaps a touch of cider.

T: Slightly sweet, with pumpkin and pumpkin pie spices. Definitely getting a little bit of a cider thing in there. It pretty much tastes like fall.

M: Medium in body with very fine carbonation.

O: Overall it tastes like fall in a glass. Nice, perhaps a touch sweet.

Decent bit of hops for the style but works better than Smuttynose.

The aroma provides more pumpkin than the flavor profile. I prefer this, as I don't like overwhelming pumpkin flavor, but the overall base beer is a little too thin for me to really enjoy it

Appearance: Pours with a nice bubble show though the head doesn't amount to all that much; the liquid is hazy and amber; the head fades quickly, leaving a few spots of lace

Smell: Pumpkin pie spices (cinnamon, allspice, clove) and spicy yeast phenols; brown sugar, but not much pumpkin

Taste: Pies spices, yeast phenols and brown sugar comingle on the tastebuds; little pumpkin flavor, though; rather sweet through the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Interesting use of the spices but the overall sweetness and the lack of pumpkin flavor reduces the enjoyment

Thanks, larryi86, for the opportunity
