Grunion Pale AleGrunion Pale Ale
Notes: Our Grunion Pale Ale wasn’t born on a beach, but in a backyard. Originating from an employee-only home brew contest, this award-winning hoppy pale ale is named after the tiny local fish known for late night frolics on shore. A pair of new hop varieties lend strong yet balanced summer melon aromas and herbal flavors, while a soft caramel malt sweetness holds it all together.

Seriously? Beer that taste like onions? WTF? I just don't understand this one at all.....
I usually love the BP offerings, but this is too strange for me. I'm going to finish the 6er just to make sure, though. I haven't yet found a beer I could not finish, but this one is close.

Poured into pint glass. The color is a deep gold with a thick, frothy milk-white head and lacing. The smell features grapefruit and melon with a distinct hoppiness. The initial taste is quite bitter, hoppy grapefruit and pine. At first, I didn't taste any sweetness. There's some mild yeast taste at the finish, but as it warmed in the glass, I finally detected a slight melon taste. This is a nice, crisp ale with pleasant carbonation. It drinks easily. If the ABV were higher than 5.5, then it would be a bit overpowering. Overall, this ale seems to be more of a session IPA than the pale ale I expected. It's quite good, though.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours golden with solid clarity; fluffy white head that slowly fades leaving nice retention and decent lacing. Smells great. The aromas have lots of ripe pineapple and grapefruit. It does have a bit of that "garlic & onion" vibe, but I like that. It's not even over the top for those who don't like that. The flavors match the nose for the most part. Mouthfeel is nice. It's medium-bodied with active carbonation. Very smooth and easy to drink. Alcohol goes unnoticed.

This is a very nice pale ale. This beer reminds me exactly of Habanero Sculpin, minus the habaneros.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into an Altamont glass.

Clear yellow-orange, with two fingers of short-lived head.
It smells heady and delightful, with lots of melon, aromatic herbalness, and hint of citrus.
Lovely! A crisp, quenching pale ale hits with a wall of smooth malt, before becoming all about the scintillating hop presence. Grapefruit and orange, basil and pine and earth. It's bitter in a minerally sort of way, but it's fairly short-lived, allowing the aftertaste to be more hard and clean than abrasively hoppy.
Excellently made pale ale. Recommended.

Hops: Mosaic, Calypso
Malt: Marris Otter, Carapils

12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a yellow orange color with great clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Frothy lacing down the glass as the beer was drank too.

Smell: Citrus, herbal, grassy, and floral hops followed by toasted, biscuity, and pale malts.

Taste: Stone and candied fruit, tangerine, citrus, grassy, herbal, biscuity, toasted, and pale malts. Some chewiness and bitterness in the rear too.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, crisp, refreshing, a little chewy, light bitterness, and medium carbonation. Enjoyableand crushable.

Overall: Another tasty APA. Will revisit again this summer.

Dark straw or amber appearance with a significant head and too much carbonation. Aroma is definitely hoppy with an onion or strong vegetable accent. Taste is also hoppy and onion or something similar.

Nice, clear Amber color. Not much of a head. Love the aroma, hops, herbal, citrus. Taste is excellent: seems dry-hopped to the bejesus belt. Dank, citrus, bitter, more of an IPA than a pale ale but who's complaining? This is an excellent pale ale. Now I'd love to get it in cans like the other Ballast Point offerings.

Clear, amber-colored beer with a three finger high, fluffy, white head that leaves lacing on the glass.

Nose: Spicy hops, grass, grape, lemon and pine.
Taste: Bread, sweet malt, pine, grass, grapefruit and bitter orange peel.
Mouth: Medium body. High but smooth carbonation. Dry and slightly bitter ending.

Great beer!

I love this beer. A great bitter punch at the start but smooths off with a nice finish. Great for the summer and BBQs. This and Victory at Sea is getting me more and more into Ballast Point.

Really smooth and slick pale ale. Perfect balance with a slick mouthfeel, bright tropical hops, and just enough malt. Very low bitterness. Quenching fruity hops.

From the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This nice pale ale pours a clear
medium amber with a fantastic head of white foam that subsides to a thick beaded
ring, thin light pool, and features some darn tasty looking lacing. Nose of grapefruit,
ripe musk melon, sweet caramel malts, pineapple, and a touch of mango mixed with
bitter hop notes. Flavors hit the perfect notes and for me one of the best darn pales
I have had in a long time with musk melon and caramel malts dancing about a dose of
pineapple and mango with strong herbal hops in the background.
Very nice body, medium mouth feel, light coating of sticky hops, medium light carbonation
that is lively, and a sweet hoppy finish.

Overall----excellent for a stronger hopped pale which is interesting to me
since I am by no means a hop head but can appreciate a well crafted one when I have it.

Cheers

Pours a pale golden orange with a fluffy white head with good distribution and retention. Smells of dank green onions, mango, peach, and orange rind. Taste is bitter up front, again hit with dank green onions, a bit of grapefruit, and slightly vegetal. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but there is a noticeable amount of oilyness. The beer looks and smells great, tastes pretty good too, but doesn't quite live up to the expectations set forth by the appearance and nose.

I'd been going back and forth on whether or not to try this (as I've typically been somewhat underwhelmed by Sculpin), but I picked up a can tonight and am thoroughly impressed. The nose is big, hoppy, and actually reminds me of a lot of northeast IPAs. The taste falls off a bit and the body is a little light, but I will definitely keep this in mind whenever I'm shopping for something off the shelf.

Pineapple bomb.... well done ballast point. This beer must have mosaic of galaxy. Such a fresh and crisp pineapple flavor. A top class pale ale. Hope I find this one on tap eventually.
