The first in Ballast Point's Robust Series, purchased from the Scripps Ranch brewhouse. Labeled as 9.1% abv.

Lots of sticky, bubbly offwhite head atop this copper sheened brew.
Grapefruit-like hop scents abound, with an underlying grassiness accompanied by just a hint of sweet malt.

Taste is hop centered, like any respectable DIPA should be. Citric bite that slides into a dry, rock-solid bitterness. Finishes dry and sweet.

A great one from BP, and I'm stoked to finally see this one in bottled form. Don't know what the availability is going to be outside of the Linda Vista and Scripps Ranch outlets, but it is totally worth seeking out.

I guess I forgot to write a review based on the growler I got a few months back. Well, this one I had at O'Briens on tap in a regular pint glass. It's a dark orange, bordering on red, color. Just barely hazy. Aroma is strongly of grapefruit and grass. It is decently bitter, with a huge blast of hop flavor. It's got a lot of grapefruit rind, but also a resiny, pine cone character that I noticed in Dreadnought. There is a huge, sweet caramel and alcohol surge that comes on quite quickly. The alcohol is a bit offputting.

Overall: double IPAs seem to walk the road of juicy (Pliny, Racer X) or the road of caramel (Hop 15). This one is caramelly, a bit much for my taste.

Light gold color. Large white foamy head. Aroma is hoppy and fruity. A medium bodied double bodied IPA. Malts are fruity and sweet. Hops are spicy, piney and juicy. The hops really dominate in this beer, yet there is still a residual sweetness that balances all those hops. Nicely balanced. Very smooth. No alcohol bite, despite an 8.6% alcohol content. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is bitter.

Sampled @ Strong Ale Fest San Diego

The beer pours a translucent amber color with a moderate sized white and semi-creamy head with a fine coating of lace. The nose is hop floral, sweet malt backing, clean and fresh, citrus crisp with just a hint of earthiness from the malt, slightly sweet and nicely malted start, top is light to middling in feel. Finish is brisk in its carbonation, the hops powerful in their double spicy bite, and the aftertaste dry as a desert bone, a quite nice double IPA.

Sampled at the 7th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival at the Carlsbad Pizza Port. Had a clear orangish color and a bubbly off-white head that quickly fizzled down to a skim. The smell was a powerful rush of citrus, mainly grapefruit, with a bit of pine lurking around in the background. The taste was a bonanza of citrus flavors - lemon zest, grapefruit, some tangerine - all prominent on the palate. Some light malt notes added a welcome contrast. A solid pine-like bitter bite was this beer’s parting shot in the finish. The feel was smooth and full.
Dorado Double IPA is a very well-crafted beer that is almost too easy to drink, given its %ABV. While I’m not a big IPA fan, I can honestly say this brew is one I’d order up again in a heartbeat when looking for a hops infusion.

Another really great IPA to add to my list. This brew was very impressive and refreshing even though it came after the super Racer X Double IPA from Bear Republic. The body is a slightly hazy amber with a very nice off-white head with good lacing.

The nose is very good with plenty of citrus and aromatic hops in evidence. The flavor is very much of citrus with a strong grapefruit taste predominating. Plenty of complexity here, but the malt is rather subdued because of the hop content. The feel is full but less creamy than expected. A very snappy finish makes it a winner.
