Brewed by:
Ballast Point Brewing Company
California, United States

Style: American Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Commodore came out of our search for a medium-bodied American Stout. The recipe began at our R&D pilot brewery, but quickly became a favorite of our crew. Strong flavors of roast coffee and bittersweet chocolate balance with light citrusy hop aromas, highlighted by a crisp, bitter finish. One sip of this gold medal-winning stout will have you ready to take command of your own fleet.

12oz bottle - the name of this brew reminds me of that character in Boardwalk Empire.

This beer pours a solid black abyss, with faint red-cola basal edges, and three fingers of puffy, rocky, and somewhat bubbly brown head, which leaves some decent broken web lace around the glass as it very slowly seeps away.

It smells of bittersweet cocoa powder, lightly roasted and bready caramel malt, sort of acrid coffee, some muddled dark orchard fruitiness, and a minor leafy, earthy, and piney green hoppiness. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, a touch of biscuity toffee, day-old cafe-au-lait, rich medium chocolate, a hint of black licorice, some free-range char, more hard to parse bruised stone fruit, and still understated earthy and floral hop bitters.

The carbonation is fairly low-key in its timid-seeming frothiness, the body an adequate middleweight, and generally smooth, maybe a suggestion of damp ashiness messing around a bit too much for the collective good. It finishes off-dry, but trending toward the latter, as the roasted and hoppy essences exhibit some lingering meddle.

Overall, this is a pretty sturdy version of the style, straightforward in its earnestness, and not trying to be something bigger (and not necessarily better). Full-flavoured, and easy to drink, with an extra point and a half of the ol' wowee sauce keeping to the shadows. Good stuff.

I like The Commodore....nice solid easy drinking stout that has enough body to make you feel good. The beer poured dark and opaque with a tan head and spotty lace. The scent has some earth and roast. The taste is evenly balanced and does not finish too acidic. There is roast and hints of coffee. The mouthfeel is medium in body with smooth carbonation. Overall this is a beer worth trying.

Gorgeous pour of blackness, sweet opaque blackness. Tan head that holds fairly well and laces nicely on the glass. Nose is roasty with hints of yummy dark, bitter chocolate. More of that dark chocolate on the palate too with a hint of coffee. Finish is more of the same, and is quite appetizing for that next sip. I'll have another. Wish I could sample this one on nitro.

Looks excellent - pitch black, a finger of tan head, tons of lacing. Mild nose, light roasted malt. Flavor is almost stereotypically stout-ish. Dominated by roasted malt, some light coffee, a hint of chocolate. Bitterness at the back end. Good, but nothing particularly distinguished about it. Not remotely as interesting or unique as a lot of their other brews, but a fine stout overall.

Ebony body capped with a frothy, sticky, brown head; clumps and sheets of foam adhere to the glass. Roasted and charred grain aroma; coffee; cocoa. Milk chocolate flavor; bitter chocolate; hop bitterness starts with a keen edge yet slowly recedes to a subtle level. Heavy and smooth mouthfeel; mild astringency; mostly dry finish.

Thick, chewy, and dark grain goodness comprises the essence of this beer. It exhibits a solid richness built upon a bold and complex malt base. Most enjoyable!

Pours black with a nice foamy deep tan head. Lacing on this pour is decent.

Nose seems almost equally hop-bitter than roasted malty. There is definitely both, burnt toast and maybe a little coffee, I also get a woody to piney hop note.

Taste seems hop-forward to me as that woody to forest-like bitterness hits me first. The roasted notes catch up mid-palate, more burnt toast with a little nuttiness than any other common roasted notes. Feel is bold on the palate, but a tad watery over the tongue.

I'm not a big fan of hops taking over stouts. If someone told me this was a black IPA, I could almost see it.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown black with a medium creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet perfumey roast grainy malt.

The flavor is sweet grainy malts and a little fruit with a heavy acidic roast bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, grainy with lots of acidic roast.

12oz bottle, Julian date of 11/27/15 (15331). Pours black with a larger sized khaki head; some lacing. Smells of roasted malt, char, bitter cocoa, and citrus/earthy hops. The taste follows closely with roasted malt, char, cocoa, and some hops. Moderate bitterness and some lingering dryness. Average carbonation and below average body. Overall, the citrus hops are a nice touch, but it needs sweetness for balance.

Black in color and impenetrable to light. There's a fingernail of beige surrounding the rim. I smell notes of dry roasted barley, smoke, and light notes of dark chocolate. I taste plenty of bitter roasted barley, smoke, and dark malt. The body is dry and smoky.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big two finger tan head which slowly settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A roasty and fairly sweet dark malt forward aroma with a scent of chocolate and coffee. Dark roasted barley malt with a scent of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, biscuit, nuts, yeast, and slight smoke. Sweet hints of vanilla and cream. Subtle hints of earthy and citrus hops. A very solid roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and sweet dark malt driven taste with good notes of chocolate and coffee. Dark roasted barley malt with charred notes of dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, toast, biscuit, nuts, and yeast. Some sweet notes of vanilla and cream. Also some nice light notes of citrus and earthy hops. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very creamy, silky, and smooth.

Overall: A very good take on a medium sized American Stout. Good charred dark malt flavors with some nice cream and subtle hops.
