Notes:
Our Pineapple Sculpin IPA came from one of many small-batch cask experiments to enhance the flavor of our signature IPA. With so many tropical hop notes in Sculpin, how could we not try adding some sweet, juicy pineapple? The combination of fruity flavors and hop intensity definitely packs a punch.

Okay i'm just gonna start off by saying this is by far my favorite take on Sculpin since the original.
Look - Pours medium-light head, dark yellow in color.
Smell - Sweet citrus hops, Grass, and pineapple.
Taste - First thing to hit the palate is that classic Sculpin flavor of citrus, floral hops. Lemon, tropical fruits, and grains come next. Aftertaste is of sweet fresh pineapple.
Mouthfeel - Full bodied and well carbonated, it's the kind of beer i like to swirl around before swallowing.
Overall - This is a delicious beer. My personal favorite take on sculpin. I just love pineapple and i feel like Ballast Point did an excellent job incorporating it into their award winning beer. Cheers!

Looks like other Sculpins.
Smell: Um, pineapple. Kind of enticing, promising an intense juiciness.
TAste: Some of the citrus of Sculpin comes through, overlaid with pineapple. The latter isn't as intense as the nose promised. A bit watered down. Not sure if that's good or bad, because I don't think the pineapple flavor that does come through enhances the original. Wanted to try it once; that's enough.

From 02/26/16 notes. Picked up a sampler case with this in it yesterday, 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.
Pours a hazy, bright orange color with two fingers of fluffy off white head and moderate carbonation evident. Sweet pineapple juice, citrus hops, grapefruit, tropical fruits, fruity malts. Medium body and low carbonation, no bitterness.
Overall good, but I still prefer the grapefruit and normal to this. Little too much artificial pineapple flavor for me, even if it says natural flavors on the label. Love the grapefruit version but wouldn't seek this one out again.

Another ill-conceived Sculpin variant. Why do we need these? Think of the children, Ballast Point.
This pours like Sculpin generally does, a clear golden orange, with a half inch head, and a good level of lacing.
This smells like someone took Sculpin and dumped pineapple syrup into it. The pineapple flavor is unpleasant, and very artificial. It doesn't feel like real fruit was used, it feels more like pineapple extract syrup or something like that. This makes it taste like pineapple jolly ranchers on top of a good IPA to me. At it's best, it tastes like the leftover juice from a fruit cup. At it's worst, it tastes like a pineapple Jolly Rancher. This is a major disappointment, but not one that surprises me. It all sits too heavily on top of the wonderful base that Sculpin is.
This is medium bodied, with a crisp(ish) mouthfeel- it sometimes feels a bit syrupy. I had a tough time finishing it.
File this as another highly unnecessary Ballast Point fruited variant thing. Not my thing in the slightest.

On tap at The Federal Bar in North Hollywood, CA.
Pours a clear golden-orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Thick swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, pineapple juice, and pineapple chunk aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest, grapefruit juice, and pineapple juice flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a great pineapple addition that works super well with the base beer.
Serving type: on tap.

I love how BA determines your score by averaging look, smell, taste and feel. Not good. A beer can look good and taste like shit. That averages out to be an ok brew.
Anyway, pineapple sculpin got a higher rating from me than it realistically should get. I like Sculpin. The Pineapple is a gimmick. It adds nothing to the experience. Dare I say boring?

Opened on 3/1/16 from a 12oz bottle and poured into a snifter. Upon opening the bottle I was instantly hit with a big whiff of pineapple. The smell dissipated after 30 seconds or so, but was still there. Look was a copper-y color just like your typical IPA. Taste was slightly tart with subtle hints of pineapple, but not bad at all. Feel was somewhat thin but had good carbonation and was on point with what you'd expect from an IPA. Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. I'm not sure why it has gotten as many bad reviews as its had, but this is a beer I could drink regularly. It doesn't beat the regular Sculpin, but the subtle hints of pineapple add a little fruity flavor to a beer that was already a winner. Cheers!

12oz bottle into NB globe, fresh
Look - Deep, golden orange, and just a little hazy. Pours with a foamy offwhite cap that retains very well for the long haul.
Smell - Redolent of perfumy, juicy fresh pineapple goodness right off the bat, citrusy hops with mild pine, caramel malt sweetness in the background.
Taste - Thankfully the massive fruit from the nose is toned down and balanced to perfection in the taste. Opens up with juicy, fresh pineapple but in a very subtle way that doesn't scream "pineapple juice". Malt body is caramely, a bit toasty, and semi-sweet, which mingles so nicely with the fruity, orangy hopping. A medium punch of spicy, piney hop bitterness activates in the finish to dry things out and keep it from getting overly sweet. A hint of pineapple lingers as well, just begging you to take another swig.
Feel - Medium body with just enough smooth, foamy carb to lighten up the feel sufficiently. Is a bit heavy feeling for my taste, but this is a huge flavor-bomb IPA after all.
Overall - Awesome IPA. I really love how the sweet pineapple smell is in your face and you start thinking "juice bomb", but the taste dials it way back and it turns out to be a really perfectly balanced IPA with a nuanced fruit addition. This is a masterfully crafted brew.

12 oz brown bottle with yet another beautiful sculpin label. Poured into a tall stemmed tulip.
This like all the sculpin ales is a work of art in the glass. Beautiful color and big fluffy head leaving loads of stick. The aroma may be the best of all the wonderful sculpin ipas and blends bright fruits with a lovely pineapple character. Taste is solid as well but with a lot less pineapple though it creeps through the middle followed by the grand cracker malts. Texture is spot on and coats the mouth with superb thickness. I could get carried away drinking this as it flows like the first class ale it is.
Overall, I love all the sculpin ipas and Ballast Point for that matter. Each and every sculpin has the complexity and brilliant balance an ipa needs. Pineapple sculpin is super drinkable and has enough unique pineapple notes to make it different from the others. I've never had a sculpin that wasn't world class, and Pineapple Sculpin is just that.

My strong for Easley generates three fingers of foamy off white head. Body is a golden tone that is quite appropriate for an IPA. Head has excellent retention and leaves considerable lace as a slowly fades. Nose has Hinson citrus and fresh pineapple as well. As I take first sip I quickly notice that the fruit that this beer is based off of is not nearly as pronounced as grapefruit sculpin. I find this flavor profile to clean a little closer to regular sculpin With only a hint of pineapple flavor. That being said this is overall a very good easy drinking IPA.
